I've see na very "type A" pattern in the "personified Rn".....
My master question is.....
How can so many Nurses be so "adrenaline junkied"...."Materialistic" .......and so "time Bound"...when they see such BIG doses of reality in the world i.e. death disease, etc..etc..
Wouldnt this bring them more down to a "live in the moment" disposition...and bring them to be more sentient in the whole "dont let the rose pass you by thing?"..
geeeeeeeeeesh I DONT GET IT... Is it another blind adherance?
I just wonder how many nurses you know and what you mean by materialistic. Most I know have decent houses but don't wear Prada but can provide nicely for their family. Do you mean live for the moment that they should all be sky divers or should they give everything away? I sure do like what I'm able to buy, I like my job and I like my time off and nice vacations and have things to do in my spare time so I just don't understand.
I don't think your video clip really applies to why are nurses materialistic question. Are you materialistic? do you have things or want things? that's a big individual thing. Are you giving time and money to charities, soup kitchens, thrift shops, disaster relief....here's a clip does this one mean anything to you???? http://www.thedashmovie.com/ what are you doing with your dash?
i loved both those movies. thank you for sharing them both of you. if your loved one is working for money to support the family and the money isn't making her happy then is it worth it? do you want to spend your time on earth wealthy and unhappy? you don't need an rv to go camping - you can use a tent. if you take your kids camping in a tent don't they learn more than camping in an rv? i don't live out in the country (which is expensive) but i often go to state parks (sometimes daily) to enjoy the country. everybody i've talked to who has gone to live in africa said they would go back in a heart beat. they say it's "rough" but yet they still like it. i still think your loved one is in the grips of societies teaching or brainwashing that money makes you happy. i don't think people in general really are materialistic i think we live in a society that teaches us to be materialistic.
 The pragmatic, concise, short, trite, practical, simple, answer is that we are financially trapped... just like everyone else. Medical bills have wiped out our credit scores. .......She cannot go back to school right now because she does not want to sacrifice the remaining years that she will have left with our kids..she already sacrificed enough of their getting her RN degree. And as far as the Africa comment.. I understand the moral redemption with being over there, but I wonder if alot of people would eventually miss pottery barn, reality shows and their plasma TVs? Tell me more of what you think. I like your perspective.
adrenaline junkied: And this is a bad thing? As a nurse the ability to think fast on your feet is a necessity. You want someone that can respond in a crisis not shut down and whimper in a corner.
Materialistic: This one is almost too funny. I can't believe you were serious when you posted that. Nurses are no different from anyone else. We want to provide a nice home for our families, be able to take our children on a vacation now and then without over-extending our credit or breaking the bank. I work hard for my salary as a nurse. Like most nurses I believe that I am underpaid for what I do yet I show up to work every day that I am scheduled and give my patients the best care I can give and then some.
It is hard to explain to someone that isn't a nurse the feelings one has watching a terminally ill patient, an accident victim, or just an elderly person struggle for their last breath. I have been a RN since the early 90's and have seen many patients and their families through the dying process. To this date it hasn't gotten any easier. You obviously do not not know how emotionally challenging and draining it can be to see a person and their family through the dying process.
As far as your Africa comment goes, that deserves no comment. It was totally uncalled for.
Thanks for your reply. my issues are not that the adrenaline junky-nurse is a bad person...it takes all types. Its just that they are not very healthy people in my opinion because they never learn to chill-out, and spend most of their lives never noticing a flower, and probably dying a very early death, not to mention that most of the world sees them as being fake hence their attention spann is equivilent to a ferrett on a tub of expresso. My point is:
Where's the reality in this personality after all the drama stops? I dont see much. And the divorce rate in this world probably contains this mainstream persona ( hyper-nurse) at its nucleus. Arent they actually nothing short of a waiter in beverly hills? Minus all the drugs and histrionics? :::sheeeeeesh
'
Color Me Skeptical.
you say "the remaining years with our kids" i hope you mean their childhood years and not that she has a terminal illness? i've lived on minimum wage and i know it sucks to be really poor - mean sick landlords, rentals that don't accept pets, psycho neighbors who don't want to work, other's treating you like garbage because you're not rich - been there done that know it sucks. people who say money doesn't matter usually have enough to live decently - if they didn't then they'd know it does matter to some extent. we should have socialized medicin so people don't get wiped out by medical bills. it's not fair that really sick people have to be finanacially drained. there are so many different types of jobs for nurses i can't believe your loved one must stay where she's at. has she tried nursing homes, psych, or prison nursing?

There must be somebody who would believe you but can't think for themself? I really don't get that one either. Do you want all the nurses to be tree huggers? Is that a requirement? You've thrown all of the nurses into a group where we should all or are all the same. Is that the same as all CPAs are uptight, football players are stupid, male chefs are gay, musicians are drug users, doctors are smart, how about nurses are nurses because they can't be doctors? Can you put a label on anyone else? Are you doing anything to help your loved one so when she comes home she doesn't have all of the home stress also share dish duty? Homework or diapers (whichever applies) What can you do on the homefront to make things better? Yes there are other jobs in nursing besides the hospital help her look around if she's not happy.
i don't understand who you're talking about tiredofthesystem. are you saying your loved one has a dysfunctional personality and that's why she's a nurse? can you be more concrete?

yes, I believe you. I'm an operating room nurse RN CNOR and I hate the whole nursing thing. I hate the OR nursing staff.Very mean Animals. Mostly White Trash with bad husbands and terrible children.
i think you got to the heart of the prob - "very mean animals". i think when one goes to work part of being a professional is to have the right conduct or kindness. as george lucus once said - it's cool to be mean (and he meant that in a sociological way). it may be cool to be mean but it destroys the moral of the work place. i think part of your job is not just to be on time, doing a good job, but also being kind so the workplace can have a good moral. it's called putting the group ahead of yourself. in that sense meaness is a very selfish trait.
Why would you call their children terrible? You lost me on that one. Are they responsible for their parents lack of direction, tact, and sentience? Geeeeeeeeeeeeesh.....................I dont get that one. I agree on the comment abotu professionalism though, part of being a professional is being nice to others but corporate America only cares about the numbers and money.. so it wil lalways go unseen unless people come together. Its actually quite sickening to see our human race living like this. Im gonna go throw up now.
may i ask where you got your "fact" that 90% of all nurses hate their job? how many people who work in factories, offices, trucks, ect like their job? you still didn't answer my question of how is your union going to help the nurses? is the union going to make them like their job? what is it the people you're talking about need to feel happy on the job?

Fact: 90% of ALL nurses hate their jobs:mad:
So I take it that you support no part of corporate America then you only shop at mom and pop stores, grow your own garden, slaughter your own meat (if you eat meat) or buy organic from a farmer nothing like Tyson, never eat a Dominos pizza. Just from the things you say I think you'd be better off signing up for the Peace Corps helping build schools and churches in 3rd world countries....Does your computer run on some Microsoft system...talk about corporate.
I would say 90% of the nurses I work with like their jobs with some of that 90% in the love their job and of the 10% left maybe 5% would say hate it and they won't be around too long.
i agree with cassioo - you and your loved one would be better off signing up with the peace corps or a mission or something like that. or you could work in place of poverty in the usa that need health care. the system is huge and you're not going to change it. i never saw norma ray but i think it was about wages and air conditioning and ear protection and not so many hours. nurses already make good wages, they're in air conditioning etc. the system is made by the people who pay for it - insurance - government - so you're not going to change it - it's not like a factory.

I do not think EVERYTHING needs to be changed in Nursing...just things like a**-kissers in the upper rankings, over-exacting personalitys( in management) , ethics with fair and courteous communicating, power tripping, ( My girlfriend gets the shi**y shifts alot of the time because she has big ti*S and is very attractive). cynnicism, pompousness, turfy-ness, clicky-ness,( MY girlfriend got a floor one time which had wayyy too many patients because she didnt feed into the flirtyness of two lesbian nurses, and they took it personal).... Lets face it....here's the demographic of the Nurse who says that you cant change the system:
* Mid life 40's to 50's ....worked her way up in the ranks and is so highly perched and snubbed up the boss's a** that she actually has become not only dillusional, but withdrawn from her own self actualization and arrogance.
* Unnattractive*** insecure with her sagging chin and her drooopin br**** hence cant stand that the new grads and "super nurses" might have options of interrchanging career options and making better choices and actually having a better chance at marrying the intern who doesnt like older women who smoke and have emotional distortions.
* Smoker, ( see above) compulsive, prude, arrogant, dry, anti-christian, and very over the top with a blind adherence to anything that constitutes any fair and natural team concept and basic respect for the raw and unsolicited idea of human spiritual and social needs.
* Family problems at home, alky hubby, kids who's parents are not emotionally available THUS her workplace becomes a emotional punching bag.
* Cannot think for themselves and are so far sucked into the whirlwind of power, numbers and greed, that is is actually nothing short of communism.
* Has no conscience and should be smacked so hard on the a** with a bible that its making me constipated just thinking about it.
Bottom line: I have never MET A NURSE who likes nursing............the only ones who like it are the ones who can opportunistically work 1-2 shifts a week,( wife of a CEO, or meal ticket) , light an insence, and yodle every now and then because they do not have to tolerate the puppet master who KNOWS she has ALL of you by the NADS and simutaneously knows that there's not a da** thing your gonna do about it. I know there's someone out there who is reading this post scared shi*less to say anything and will be inadvertantly mired and perhaps quagmired in a partial existence, for many years to come only to play into the idea that JUST BECAUSE SOMETHING IS WHAT IT IS.........MEANS THAT IT STAYS THAT WAY. Well I think different... because someone like me respresents the voice for all the people who have been brought down by this lack of humanism and ridiculous PROCESS, that morals, powers, and ethics do NOT have to be equally distributed no matter what ranking you are at ANY hospital. Whover thinks Im full of it, dont make me name the companys who actually rspect their chain of command. .all they way down to GRUNTSVILLE.. because I'll name them!
Wow, this is an interesting thread! It's easy to pick up on your hatred of nursing and nurses, and I'm sorry to hear the anger, hostility, and bitterness you're obviously feeling. Does your wife despise her career field as badly as you do?
What position does your wife have at her job? From your posts it sounds like she's in a float pool rather than a specific fixed position, is that the case? Perhaps she would be happier finding a position that doesn't float around- either at her hospital or a different one. That way she wouldn't feel pulled here & there and thrust into situations or proximity to staff she finds disagreeable and she could have the chance to develop good relationships with fellow nurses in her unit. Floating is stressful and one never really "belongs" anywhere....
If she hates hosiptal nursing (as much as you do) why not suggest she consider changing jobs? Nursing is a profession that offers an incredably wide variety of opportunities and specialization practice options for RN's that there is literally no reason at all for any RN who is unhappy with his or her work circumstances to need to stay in the position that makes them unhappy.
Besides working in hospitals, doctor's offices, or long term care facilities nurses have the ability to work for private industry, as consultants, to do case management, home health, legal nurse consulting, forensic nursing, to go on to ope their own autonomous practice clinics if they become Nurse Practitioners, to work for health clubs, school systems, for universities, as educators, to be administrators, insurance companies, HMO's, health organizations, non-profit agencies such as the red cross, government agencies, international organizations such as the WHO, and even for foreign governments, multinational corporations.... and the list goes on and on..... the point being-- is hospital nursing is so horrid for your wife then investigate other nursing career paths but don't just discount the entire profession.
What do you do for a living if I may ask? If you despise your wife's occupation so much and she doesn't want to branch out of hospital nursing into some other facet of the profession then why don't you improve your circumstances so you earn enough that she can stay at home with the kids if that's what you both really want.
As far as your anger about medical bills.... I understand that, but paying for medical care is like paying for groceries.... we all have to do it.
Hospitals can't give services and supplies away for free because they have to pay for them you know. They don't get reimbursed at break even rates by medicare or medicaid in most cases and patients who DO have health insurance end up paying more for services to offset the cost of providing care and supplies to indigent patients, the uninsured, and illegal aliens. Someone has to pay or else the hospital can't GET supplies let alone pay staff. Many California hospitals closed their emergency departments because they were losing too much money absorbing the costs of providing care for illegal immigrants.... costs the federal government does not reimburse by the way. I personally know of one hospital that is now closed (leaving a community without a hospital at all now) because reimbursements didn't meet expenses and their pharmaceutical supplier refused them further credit. That's it- bankrupt- gone, 60,000 people have no hospital any longer & now need to drive 75 miles to the nearest facility for emergencies.
My own (grown) daughter was in a motor vehicle accident and it turned out the car's owner's insurance had lapsed and she was a student and didn't have health insurance-- she had to file for bankruptcy -- fine way to start a young life-- but that can happen and she'll move onward & upward and be better prepared in the future.... so will you folks I'll bet.
Which leads me to "materialistic".....
Nurses (since you enjoy making broad sweeing comments that encompass all of us who happen to be nurses)... are as materialistic as the next person. Since housing, food, clothing, and other basic human needs don't fall down from the sky like Manna from heaven we all work to earn them. You know the old saying, "those that don't work don't eat".... who can blame anyone, let alone an entire occupation group, for desiring to earn a living that allows them to provide for the basic necessities-- and also for things that bring them some pleasure? Money may not buy happiness but lack of money is surely the root of most unhappiness, suffering, hardship, cruelty, evil, poor health, and pain in this world. Who in their right mind does not want enough money to make life decent for themselves and their family... to try to provide for adequate housing, food, clothing, and for their children's future?
Nurses are materialistic? Yep, why not? Nurses work for a living - they're not all Nuns you know.
Your characterizations of nurses at various ages is incredably foul and sexist. Do you honestly believe physical attributes define character? Do you REALLY believe that your wife gets the shifts she does because of her bust size?? What planet are you from? That's all I'll bother to say about that, but I'm reasonably certain that you'll get some choice comments from others so stay tuned.
About the adrenaline junky & never stop to just be carefree type of comments..... nurses are individuals - not clones. Some are type A personalities and some are dingbats. I've known both. Sometimes I am both as well, but mostly I guess I'm one of your type A "adrenaline junkies" too. I'll do my best to try to explain some of that (briefly)....
It's difficult to look at life casually when one sees things through the perspective of an ER, NICU, Military, or ICU nurse (I've been all of those). Those of us who do or have done that know all too well that life is ever so fragile and things in this life can change in less time than it takes for a heart to beat.
It's impossible to look at a pick up truck in traffic with kids or a dog in the truck's bed without wanting to call a cop. We've been the ones doing our best to try to save the life of kids just like that who were thrown from the truck into traffic when the parent braked or changed lanes or they lost their balance.
It's hard to watch in silent dismay when you see someone with an arm or hand dangling out of an open car window in traffic... we've done our best to try to help reattach those limbs after they were partially or completely amputated by passing vehicles.....
It's difficult to see dumb behavior as "funny" when we know the very real devastation that can come of it. It's hard NOT to be serious... and yes, it's hard not to be "on edge" because what we do we have to do in an instant... we have to know what we're doing, and do it right or someone may actually die.... and we don't have the luxury of a lot of spare time to screw around with before we do it ..... so yes, we may indeed have a more serious attitude about life rather than a happy go lucky one -- sometimes there's a price to pay for having a profession that literally has the responsibility for preserving human life.
By the way, I don't hate nursing. Frankly I love ER nursing, and I loved being a military nurse. To those that don't like being a nurse though-- try a different nursing career path, or go into healthcare administration, research, go be a drug rep, or get out of healthcare entirely and use your bachelor degree and nursing background to get a totally non-healthcare related job in some corporation...... the possibilities and opportunities are there... nursing makes it all possible.
Interesting how none of my comments about power tripping in the chain of command we're addressed. Its like the elephant on the couch thing I had talked about previously. This is almost like being in the actual environment itself. Ironic. Eh? Lemme guess. . your a umm .. . err .. uh. .Nurse Manager?

:geeeeeeeeeeeeeesh
how do you know what it's like to be "in the environment?" I thought the wife/girlfriend was the nurse. I'm not in management and don't want to be because I like patient care...my manager also takes on-call on the holidays so we staff nurses dont' have to she also takes more then she assigns. She also works the floor when we're short staffed....the people on night shift where I work aren't there because of the bigger boobs they are there for the most part because of the least seniority...except 1 there by choice with the most but she has no kids and likes it because it is a bit more quiet. I probably just live in my bubble world of nursing unlike you who sit on the outside looking in and getting the opinion for the large number of nurses you know because I only work with a hospital full of them and instruct a group of students every semester and am around another whole group at another hospital.....I probably need to expand my horizons and meet more nurses. Get a job where you can put your energy into something instead her job.
My husband used to be IT at a couple of hospitals and he'd come home and say "You wouldn't believe what the nurses talk about" yea I would. I also don't bring home most things to complain to him about. Maybe your wife is a member of that ***** and moan club that makes everyone elsemiserable.
Whover thinks Im full of it, dont make me name the companys who actually rspect their chain of command. .all they way down to GRUNTSVILLE.. because I' wrote:FONT]
name away if you want I'm sure you do know all of them
to respond to the "adrenaline junkie" statement, I've been in the ER, ICU's, and everywhere in between, this includes psych, industrial, and insurance work as well. In a situation where something takes a turn for the worse, it is exciting to know what to do,and be able to jump in, and possibly help save someone's life. now that doesn't transfer over to my private life, i don't sky dive, or base jump,or free rock climb, so I'm not sure how you can make a broad judgement about nurses looking for an adrenaline rush.
b) as far as the power tripping goes, every business that has more than a couple of employees has people or a person that abuses or wields their power w/ a free hand. "absolute power corrupts absolutely" people that either forget what they used to do before they came into a power position, or started off there, and never had to work their way up. all we can do is try to remedy the problem, by voicing our concerns, and presenting a unified front.
C) materialistic - we all want to provide for our families, and children, and there are things we want. we almost all have things that we could do w/ out, but want anyway. does this make us materialistic, no just human. Now if we just accumulate, for the sake of getting more things,or "keeping up w/ the jones" then that can be called materialism.
Well at least you got the SOMETHING needs to be "voiced" part right. Thanks for your time. Now Im gonna go move that elephant.. anyone wanna give me a hand?
p.s. I'll name one company where there isnt alot of b.s. and unhappiness... COSTCO..
They start their "grunts" off at $17 per hour.. have the lowest turnover ration in the U.S. and have a SUPERB grievance policy with riders in it that innately discuss humanitary and equal behaviour in the chain of command.
+ their CEO only makes $300,000 per year when most CEO's make 3-4 million............ He has chosen humanitary principals. So .. umm .. Just sayin hi to all of you power tripping RN's in upper level management.
what? why am i an assistant head nurse for that :( :( really the only thing that bothers me about nursing is people, ha,ha. no, but really if nurses stopped eating their young and worked as a true team everything would pan out.mybe even administration could offer the nurses a cookie every now and then. oh, and i love PRADA.:D
Oh I bet you do love Prada.. its a FACT that most nurses go into the field because basket weaking and philosophy dont pay diddly jack.. so trust me.. I see the faux persona that your joking about every day.. only problem is. IT ISNT A JOKE.. its true and NAUSEATING.

I prefer Coach myself :)
Hey, does your girlfriend have any idea how little you respect nurses? What DO you despise nurses so much btw? Did you apply for nursing school but not get accepted? Flunk out of college while majoring in nursing? What is it? Have you shown your girlfriend this thread with all of your sweet sentiments laid bare? Is she still going out with you - or did she dump you? Is that why you have such hostility-- did you get dumped by a nurse girlfriend?
thanks medi. I think that other guy needs his lithium level checked?:p wow, talk about hostile! that is EXACTLY the kind of hostility we face daily, and we are suppost to keep smiling.anyway medi, thanks for the support;)
oh, and tiredofthesystem, where are you getting all of the FACTS you keep totting? you need to substantiate facts with proof ( I learned that in philosophy!)oh and also,we are nurses NOT nuns.I did not take a vow of poverty.I be you didn't either!!!!!
I do wish we had a Costco around here then I could make my millions go so much further. I just can't help but think of all of the giant cans and bulk items I could buy. Maybe they could put Wal-Mart and their low pay out of business. If I ever do get tired of nursing I'll keep Costco in mind for my next career will they give me an employee discount so I can buy more stuff??? would that make me a materialistic costco employee or would I then have to become that nun with the high pay and not spend that money? I'm soooooo confused now about what I should do.
Forget Costco as a financial means cassio.. you got your cheesy Avon Link posted under your name... your all set. Shucks at least selling Avon you wont get your soul trampled on by some disgruntled RN manager who is in the closet, out of touch with humanity, and has the attention spann of a ferrret on a tub of expresso.
Thanks for noticing the site you can order directly from there. I really do rather well at that without much work at all involved. I sell enough of that (to my nurse manager and a couple from other units buy also included) that I can make a pretty good car payment (not a BMW but not a kiddie car either)and still have all my materialistic nurse money for other stuff. AND being so materialistic when I had my yearly evaluation yesterday I got a nice lump sum bonus and I signed the papers and said yep I agree with it SHOW ME THE MONEY. I could have disagreed and held out for 03% more but I'm taking it and running and going to spend a bit on the cruise that 7 of us are taking in November. (only 4 are nurses the other is our secretary that we are so mean to and the other 2 are just Avon reps that have money to burn also) So by all means order away and support my habits :)
tiredofthesystem - boy you sure know how to write. and to the lady who sells avon - i'm one of those people who gets sick when they smell women's perfume - what do they put in it that causes some to react this way? i know i'm not the only one this way. men's perfume doesn't bother me.

::giggles:::::::::;)
YIKES now he's giggling like a loon!!
Who let him out of lock up???
Cassioo the secretary going on the cruise must be terribly materialistic to be able to afford that! *lol*
Ok, let's name our favorite things just to keep Tiredofthesystem from geting "tired"......
Mont Blanc Rollerballs - have to watch the docs to make sure they don't borrow it & then try to take off-- aren't they just the world's worst pen thieves??
Impromptu Poll: Who's worse at trying to walk off with your pens-- doctors or med students?
Littmann Cardiology lll Stethoscope - watch docs around this too... if they ask to borrow it keep an eye on them to be sure you get it back!
Jaguar S- Type : Actually I'm considering a Mercedes next time.... I had a Porche 944 when I first started as a nurse, then it's been Jag's-- the Jag handles wonderfully, and you just can't beat the appearance, but there's a sporty little BMW convertable that might be fun next....
Ok, another Poll: which do you material girls prefer- should it be another Jag or do you vote for the beemer convertable next?
Watch: I'm pedestrian about watches really.. personally I prefer a cheap Tag Heuer 2000 that I can dive in because it's quartz and doesn't need winding.... Rolex is so last generation in my mind... and that auto mechanism is more bother than asset if you ask me... always have to keep it on a winder unless wearing it or everything has to be reset you know?
Ok, that's my short list....
Care to add yours? Mustn't bore "tired" you know :)
I'd like to know the source of your comment: "Fact 90% of nurses hate their job!" Is this your observation of your loved one's particular situation or is it based on some survey. I ask this because in my experience most nurses really do like their job and love taking care of their patients. I agree that hospital politics is a pain to put up with but that too can be worked with. My first job in nursing was in a Teaching hospital and it was horrible _ I was new nurse with no real experience, clinicals in school are not in any way representative of actual staff nursing, and I had a preceptor who came from the Eat your young variety of nurse. After just 6 mos on the job I was ready to leave the profession. My husband stood by me and said I could do whatever I wanted but also stated that maybe I just needed a different working environment! I took a month off and started working at a local community hospital (210 beds) as a labor and delivery nurse. This hospital paid for my training and treated me fairly. At this hospital I only activated the chain of command once (When a Dr. Showed up in the middle of the night for a unexpected C-sect, drunk as a lord and insisted he could operate) I can assure you that even though the chief of staff was wakened in the middle of the night I suffered no repercussions for my actions.
I also resent your uninformed coments about nursing homes, psych nursing, prison nursing etc... I currently work in a 98 bed inpatient psych facility and I love my job. Is it hectic and dangerous at times? Yes. But again the facility is 5 minutes from home, I have 8 hour shifts and on days like today when my son has no school and the babysitter canceled the management bent over backwards to adjust my schedule at the last minute so that I could take care of my son.
Nursing is what you make of it. It's also a versitile career path where you can do almost any kind of nursing and work as little or as much as you want. Yes, I make good money and so does my husband but it wasn't always that way. My credit was destroyed in a previous marriage, I've been homeless (lived in a tent in oregon for 8 mos) I rose from those ashes buy hard work and determination. My husband works well and we enjoy a comfortable living; modest house, private school for our son , a nice vacation every 3 years or so with smaller trips in between. I stop and smell the roses every day, in fact I grow rare orchids as a hobby and yes I grow most of my own food. The trick is to choose your working environment and never bring the job home! As I said most of the nurses I know really do like their jobs.
Tiredofthesystem wrote:Oh I bet you do love Prada.. its a FACT that most nurses go into the field because basket weaking and philosophy dont pay diddly jack.. so trust me.. I see the faux persona that your joking about every day.. only problem is. IT ISNT A JOKE.. its true and NAUSEATING.
Tired- I was doing my best not to respond to this thread...that is right up until the time I read THIS post. Now since I'm new here and do not know anyone, I'll preface my response with this tidbit of information. I'm known for speaking exactly what I feel....and my belief is that you will have no doubt where I stand by doing so.
I'm not going to skirt the issue like some have by saying you are hostile, you need lithium levels checked, etc. I'm going to call it what it is. You are an ass. You have some deep seated resentment towards nursing. Is it because you were treated badly as a patient? Or, is it more along the lines of your wife makes more money than you and you can't feel like a "man" because of it? I'm still curious why you've never answered the question about what it is that YOU do.
While I'm not sure about the basket weaving not paying off....maybe you are. I was a police officer....yeah, read that adrenaline junkie....for 9-1/2 years. I was involved in a very bad crash at work. Three weeks in the hospital and 6 surgeries later I kept my leg, but lost my career. The only career I ever wanted. When I was trying to figure out what to do with myself I thought back to the nurses I had while in the hospital. Three weeks you get to know them pretty well. Some I didn't like...some I did. Funny thing is, BOTH types helped me to decide to try nursing. The good ones made me want to be just like them.....the bad ones made me want to never treat a patient the way they would. And guess what? I thought things over and made a decision to be a nurse. YES!! I was then, and am still able to think for myself!!
Materialistic? You're damn right! If materialistic is what you want to call it fine. For almost ten years I went to work making way less than what I was worth as a cop. 9 out of 10 people I made contact with were NOT glad to see me. Guns, knives, fists, getting spit on, etc...I've seen it all. During this time I struggled to make ends meet. Can you believe that my FIRST day on the job as an LPN that I made more than after ALL my years as a cop?! So now being a nurse....and my wife is a Respiratory Therapist...we are able to afford a better life for our family. So if I bust my butt all week long and do my job well and take care of my patients, why can I not drive a new car? Why can I not buy a new house? Why can I not do the things that I want to do? The answer is I can....and I will. Does that make me a bad person? Not a chance! I volunteer, we donate to charities, I coach tball, I take care of my family, I'm a good husband and a damn good father.
As far as people with power goes......My Lord!!! Have you not ever worked a day in your life? It doesn't matter what you do or where you work, that situation will ALWAYS exist. It isn't nursing....it's human nature!
Your wife/gf can't get shifts because of a big chest? That is an incredibly ridiculous statement! And a pathetic one if it's used as an excuse. I would, as I'm sure others would, love to know your wife/gf's side of the story.
I'm going to say one more thing then I'm bowing out.
I went back and read this entire thread and here are my observations.
The original post was obviously meant to inflame people and should have been deleted. However, since it stayed on people will respond to it. I've worked a number of jobs in my life, some I liked and some I didn't, but for sure in the 27 years of my life I seen no shortage of ugly discontented people in any area including nursing. On the whole I've found that most nurses are really good people and work and play well with others on and onff the job.
The moronic airhead stupid person with no attention span that this poster described could never survive as a nurse in any real nursing setting.
Also this poster has made several comments about nurses and supervisors being unchristian and needing to be hit upside the *** with a bible when he is spouting the most unchristian foul trash I've heard in a long time - talk about the pot calling the kettle black. Is it Christian to allow the mother of your children to work herself to death rather than getting a job ( I assume you don't have one since you refuse to say what you do!) get married and take care of his family rather than complain about his life. All that's necessary to get ahead in life is an attitude of gratefulness for God's grace and a willingness to work hard for the things you want. My own husband has no formal education but has managed through 20 years of backbreaking work and climbing the ladder to be in a management postion.
There are people you work under that are kind and there are those who have their own personal problems and issues that do unfortunatly bleed over into their work. The management at my facility are some of the nicest people I have ever met. The supervisor in my shift is actually wearing scrubs today and working in my spot because I had emergency childcare issues. I know that's pretty rare but I looked hard to find a pleasant and supportive working atmosphere and it was worth it.
So quit wallowing in your resentment and discontent and do something about your situation. If I had to work a busy nursing shift and come home to this kind of attitude I'd probably just lay down and quit.
Hppygratful and Kevin you both have some meaningful insight/comments and good stories :)
As to what's in women's perfume....different things but I don't know what it is that makes some people sick I can't stand the smell of some of them either. The really strong ones I can't stand.... I'd never thought of the mens scents but I don't think any of them have made me sick except with either one when someone swims in it. We have one doc you know when he's hit the door from the smell and if he's been on the phone you can smell the phone for a while after. I really don't sell much perfume but lots of footlotions, nailpolish (we can't wear fingernail polish at work but we do toes), shower gels and gift products I do really well with. As a hobby job I make a fair amount.
I'm not really into any brand name clothing I'm more a t-shirt and shorts girl but I do like good vacations for my work and I take at least 4 weeks per year in big trips then lots of little ones....going to St Louis this weekend where my son and husband are going to a Cards game my 7 yr old love Pujos (I saw enough at spring training in Fla in March I'll go look around Union Station we're staying right there) then the next weekend we're going to the Smokies. My 25 yr old stepdaughter is getting married on Saturday then I have a friend that lives there so we'll visit her on Sunday. I did 1 week in Nashville at Opryland hotel in Jan, 1 week in Daytona in March, 2 weeks in Palm Beach in July and still a cruise to go in Nov. I rented a convertable while in Palm Beach but then really didn't like it as much now that I'm older and had my 7 yr old in the car I worried about a rock or something coming in and hitting him and there was a spin out wreck right in front of us in I-95 as soon as we'd left the airport. I really am a penny pincher just because I like to and I was raised that way. I cut coupons and get my groceries almost FREE YIPPY (check out refundcents.com for inspiration) and we eat out most of the time and get paid to do it (mystery shopping). My child does look nice going to school everyday. If I want something I buy it. I take part in March of Dimes, AHA Heartwalk, Race for the Cure and I buy something from any neighbor kid who comes asking for their school fund raiser just because I know it's hard for little kids to sell the stuff. I like my job, I like my co-workers and I like to buy what I want when I want it and I'm not sorry.
I am sorry for anyone who has to be in bad mood everyday and be followed around by a little black rain cloud.
Impromptu Poll: Who's worse at trying to walk off with your pens-- doctors or med students?
I just give the docs a plain old hospital supplied bic stick pen. I like a thin black fine tip pen. One of my coworker nurses has a pen fetish though she'll say let me see that pen I like that one and she wants to keep them sometimes I'll give them to her. Anesthesia gave me a cool light up one with blinking lights.

YIKES now he's giggling like a loon!!
Impromptu Poll: Who's worse at trying to walk off with your pens-- doctors or med students?
I work in small community hospitals so I don't see many med students but I have had a fair number of pen's walk away in Dr's pockets. I did loose a very expensive Litman Cardiac III stethoscope. That my husband gave to me when I graduated from Nursing school. One night during an emergency C-Section I saw it hanging around an anesthesiologist's neck. I didn't say any thing during the surgery I was busy with a baby not breathing so well but after when things had settled down I approached said doctor and politely said I think you have my scope. He asked me how I knew and said well the tubing is cut down as you can see( a trick I learned when I was driving an abulance) and if I can see it it should have my name engraved on it. Sure enough it was mine. I don't think he stole it I just think I left it in the surgical suit one night and he picked it up. Happens all the time.
Pcola, you really make more as a nurse?! that s terrible.how much do police make down there?
My husband is a forensic ident officer in TO, and he makes pretty decent wage.almost 100G per year.Mind you, as a rookie the wage is only about45G.
Does anyone know what paramedics make down there? my son is training now,I think the scale is around 30 or 35 an hour here.
hey Pcola, did comp pay to retrain you because of your injuries?Sorry to hear you were so injured, that really sucks.
Hey, did you have the Stockholm syndrome being captive by nurse ha,ha
well if tiredofthesystem needs a job he should be a writer. he still hasn't answered how his union is going to make people happy at his loved one's hospital.
A person that is a "Type A Personality" can also be described as being hard-working, driven, successful, time oriented, responsible, etc... I could go on but I think y'all get the picture. Aren't these characteristics that help make a damn good RN ;)
Pcola.....thanks for finally finding the strength to run me into the ground. The suit fits you well....now look in the mirror. :)
What do I do for a living? Well, If I actually told you then you would prolly know who my GF is, and call me out because our combination is so rare, that anyone who reads this that lives near us would know exactly who the nurse is. ::geeeeeeeeesh::
So I'll just say this. I dont work for anyone, and Im self employed, love the freedom, the money, and love the fact that what I do makes everyone around me better. Im not some grumbling jealous boyfriend sitting with a bottle of paxell in the corner of my room on rainy days. I am actually very heavily into introspection, self actualization, pragmatic thinking, cinnergism, humanism, calling out narcissism, creative visualization, ..etc..etc..blah blah blah.
Point One : ANYONE who thinks that float pool nurses dont get dumped on is FULL of S***,THE JEALOUSY OVER THE DIFFERENCE OF WAGE AND LABOR HAS ALWAYS BEEN THERE and anyone who doesnt think that someone could get a crappy shift on a busier floor because they are very attractive and have huge t***, is NOT LIVING ON THE SAME PLANET. I do not make this crap up, I am telling stories about REAL scenarios. Heck look at the show ER... even though ER is and has always been over the top, its a known fact that ER's success was due to the fact that many of their stories are based upon true scenarios, in REAL environments.( I guess im referring to the flirting, power tripping, sexual employees, etc..) . so Nyah!
Point 2 : It is absolutely NOT wrong to want material things and maybe nursing is a street smart thing to do to be able to GET those things but from my observation of meeting and personally knowing HUNDREDS of nurses in my time, I conducted my own personal survey in loose conversation with them and asked a random reflexive question: WHY DID YOU GO INTO NURSING? Now keep in mind this is RANDOM....wanna know what 90% of them said the first thing off of their tongue? THE MONEY........ now am I saying that even though they do not go into it for the money that some of them are not team players, ethically inclined, and all around good people? No Im not. But am I saying that they tolerate situations which induce a growing and seeping fog of not only a comparison based identity, but also a supressed attitude towards innovation in human ethics, and basic awareness of simple human rights. ( not being able to eat for 6 hours ( violation of state law) ...( which by the way requires a 15 minute break at a MINIMAL in that duration of time.
Point 3 Robocop/Nurse be quiet because Im not even gonna get butchy with anyone.. not worth my time. :)
Point 4: If someone syntaxically goes into a field for the money as the first priority then THINGS will catch up with them. Its called FIXATION. Or lack of* TRUE NORTH PRINCIPLE...or.. MORAL COMPASS... .....................call it what you will but regardless, I stand on my soap box and say that the 4-5 nurses in this post who have beat their chest about how happy they are do not represent the majority. Hospitals are a broken system, and I think that these 4-5 nurses in this thread are the ones who are numb, blind, and also a smidge bit naive. Color me skeptical.
Point #5: Adrenaline Junky comment :... ok they work hard, think fast , blah blah blah.. ok.. now the point was..THAT THEY DO NOT KNOW HOW to SLOW DOWN, and smell a flower. Riddle me that ..cardio problems will slow them down eventually........
Point #6: Hppygrl ............ I am doing something about my resentment, I have the attention of 500
600- nurses who have read this post, and if I was writing this for self agrrandizement, then most people would not have posted the length of posts that they did...evidently there are some very debatable subjects here EH?
Point #7: Christianity in the nursing environment : <--Probably not much because of all of the disorientation of power and greed in the system. Nurses are the frontline of God's angel squad, and I can guarantee you he is rolling in the clouds wanting to sling a lightning bolt down and hit every NON HUMBLE nurse right in the a**, or perhaps smack their hands in the ruler because they certainly learned ethics in college... OOOOOOOOOOOOPS ..SCREEEEEEEEECH.!. my fault... IT WASNT DONE PROPERLY.
For all of you who tried to have a field day with me, good for you because I have not budged one bit. My feelings are based on hearing thousands of stories of how screwed up the environment is. I do think Robocop made some good points about everyone wanting material things, and I will rethink my own material needs and how much I am willing to sacrifice to get those things, but for all of you jealous, disgruntled pencil pushers, armchair quarterbacks, and a**-kisssers.......I have no sympathy for you. I think your fibbing through your money stained teeth on the lack of humanity and fair treatment amungst employees in nursing is way too obvious, Theres too many patients ( unless your a RN in a elementary school wiping elbows)....and you all take it out on each other when a union could give you all a voice. Again I would bet a big shiney nickle that most of the women supporting the communistic nursing machine are prolly 2-day a week nurses or nurses who have cushy pencil or education positions.
Im gonna go cry now........ because I have been stripped of my manhood :)
I think I know now, let me see. You sit at home,SELF employed, own nothing and hate the establishment.............ah,your PROFESSION is drug dealer???:p
Heres some more proof on that webpage forum. ::Sheeeeeeeeesh::whats a guy gottuh do to get some love around here..?

I absolutely hate nursing most of the time solely because of the other nurses. It's hard working with a group of women. I like the patients, usually have a fantastic repoire with them and have never had a patient lodge a complaint against me in the six years that I've been a nurse. I've also never had a serious problem with a doctor. Nurses themselves have a way of eating their young though. I have been training in Labor and Delivery nursing for the past four months and never, ever have I been around such a gripy, immature (though brilliant), non-positive group of people! They talk about each other and everyone else with absolutely no semblance of respect and there is no forgiveness for someone trying to learn this specialty field of nursing, even though everyone will tell you (superficially, I guess) that nobody feels any level of comfort for at least a year. I go home after at least 50% of my shifts and cry, not because of the patients but because the other nurses are extremely clique-ish. You either fit in completely or you don't fit in at all -- there's no happy medium. I have friends outside of work so it's not that I need to develop close friendships with co-workers but to feel respected as a human being is basic to my needs. Last week, I was driven to wash Lortab (prescribed for me d/t an abcessed tooth) down with wine after crying my eyes out. I just don't think nursing is worth it anymore. If you allow yourself to be vulnerable and admit that you feel afraid (which is normal in an area as litigious as L&D is), many will kick you while you're down instead of being genuine mentors. I rue the day I ever became a nurse but because my family is now used to the larger income I make, I am trapped. I'm sad because I pride myself on being a nice person but I can't figure out a way to develop the thick skin it's going to take to work with such aggressive people. I've worked in several other nursing positions and never has it been this bad. Is there any way that we, as nurses, can learn to support each other instead of tearing each other down? We could accomplish so much more as a group to better our image of professionalism. I work in Austin, Texas and I think I want to get out of nursing but this will require going back to school -- not an easy feat with a husband and three children. Anyone have any ideas?
Yet ANOTHER one.. I wonder how many of these women/men are afraid to step up to the plate? Eh? Robocop? Kimmy? Cassio?

I feel for you sister! I'm in the same boat. I actually like the hands on patient care aspect, but the short staffing, no breaks, and paperwork are killing me! I feel so depressed everyday when I go into work, because I never have a good day anymore, never get off work on time, never get any praise for all the hard work and sacrifice. The public has no idea of what we nurses really do, and what we are really responsible for! You took the words right out of my mouth.I'm struggling with whether or not I can afford (mentally) to stay in this profession.
Just because you found a message board in which a small number of nurses have found a place to B@#$%. Doesn't mean that 90% of nurses hate their jobs. I'd Still like to know the source of that statistic outside of your own mind. Perhaps you should qualify that statement with (90% of the nurses I know hate their job) Because only about 1% of the nurses I know hate their job and they were basically unhappy people to begin with. To use a bunch of people who turn to drugs and alcohol to solve their problems is just pathetic. Don't get me wrong I've been their done that myself. But once I got sober and learned to practice the art of acceptance. 90% of my resentments and difficulties in life just went away. Why, because I was creating my own unhappiness. You know people places and things only have the power to upset you that you give them. So quit allowing this to have power over you by the way you still haven't told us what you do for a living. And if you like your job! Maybe your just a generally unhappy person seeking to visit your misery on others - you should really consider a psychiatric eval and medication.
Since you like to use links to prove your point here's one you might enjoy.
It's actually and EVIDENCE BASED study of nurses job satifaction done in Canada (Who nursing shortage and management sytem is far worse that here in the US).

You obviously have no clue as to what you are talking about. Yes, there are days when I wish I had not become a nurse. I can't think of anyone in any profession that has bad days. The number of good days outnumber the bad days by far. I have never said I am depressed when I go to work. I have never said that I never get off work on time. I work 12 hour shifts 3 days a week. My work day starts around 06:45 am and ends 7:15 PM and for the most part I am walking out the door no later than 7:30 PM. We have a program at my facility called the "Star Program". This is where patients and their family members recognize members of staff that provided exceptional care. These "Stars" are placed on a bulletin board for all to see. I have never said I do not get praise for my work, it is nice when I do, but I do not crave it nor do I base my worthiness as a nurse on the amount of praise I get. The bottom line is that yes, I am a RN. I am not conceded but I know I am a damn good nurse. Why do I say this? It is because when there is a problem on the unit, a patient is not doing well, or when a staff member or their family is in hospital I am called upon to take care of the patient or help out.
I know what is expected of me and I meet and generally exceed what my employer expects of me while I am at work. Being a RN also allows me to have 4 out of 7 days off from work. Yes, there are times when I have to work a holiday but generally I get to spend Thanksgiving and Christmas at home with my family. Being a RN has also afforded me opportunities that I otherwise would not have. I am moving back to Australia at the end of the year.
Like I said from the beginning you obviously have no clue as to what you are talking about. You also do not know me so I find it rather blatant that you make such broad general statements. You sound like one unhappy person that is in need of counseling. I feel sorry for anyone that goes through life with a black cloud hanging over their head :(
This proves absolutely nothing. Yes case closed because you never had a case to start with. If you are not going to be a productive member of this forum, stop posting here. Better yet, start your own forum where you can read the ludicrous posts you place all day long. I do hope you get help. You sound like one unhappy miserable person.
Oh Indeedy " Kimmy-Kharma".... that link provides more than enough evidence of the dispair, and the misery that nurses put up with. Again,.. you have convinced yourself( see: dillusional) that these things do not PREDOMINANTLY take place.. ..
I didnt say they take place at YOUR hospital.. your hospital might be a defanged quakerland ...hell I dont know...but I think I've provided more than enough evidence through not only my own observations, but a forum of tons of nurses who feel the same way. So why dont we shake hands and affirm that there are SOME good environments which are sedate and nurturing ( see 10% ).. and some which are very volatile and degrading ( see: 90% ).
GROUP HUG! :)
p.s. My Job Status has nothing ot do with whats screwed up in nursing environments..I am a VICTIM OF THE HOSTILITY BECAUSE IT IS BROUGHT HOME TO OUR FAMILY SETTING..she gets TREATED LIKE CRAP.. the reason I am putting my time into this is because Im trying to spit the truth out on the windshield of what has been so overlooked by so many nurses over the years. Pssst! :: Hey ... if you want to missy. .you can call me Mr. Revolutionary... because thats what I call myself. Now what do I call you Kimmy? Howzuhboutz.. ..Fly on the wall? ..
