don't get mad...get even!!!

let's face it... we've ALL met at least one...

you know, that idiot who just graduated from the Demi-God Asscademy of Medicine... the one who looks down his nose at you and thinks you don't know your head from a hole in the ground?!?

What do YOU do (WELL within the scope of your nursing practice) to let him know he needs to show up in the morning on the nursing unit with a box of doughnuts?!?

my personal favorite...that 3a.m. page requesting a tylenol order!!! then getting your co-workers to intermittently page for similar orders...!
The nice thing about the AMEDD [Army Medical Department] is that nurses & MD's are on the same officer rank structure. Therefore, scenarios do exist where MD's & nurses are of the same exact rank, or a nurse can even out rank an MD. Of course, the Doc-nurse-patient relationship in the military is similar to civilian side but at least on a more equal footing, if you know what I mean. This is one of the positives of being a nurse Soldier.
cassioo Jun 20, 2004, 10:17 AM
The tylenol order works quite well...you want to be called? well let me call you then. I got chewed out by a doc a couple of weeks ago. He was having a bad day and so was I but then when I wouldn't do something against policy to "help him out as a friend" he got mad at me. He later did say he was sorry and I was right but before he did that he told me he wouldn't sign orders I wrote as routine. I said fine then I won't write routins for you I'll call you.

We've recently gotten resident DO's and some of them have docitis. Like call upstairs and tell them I'll be there in a minute....there's the phone you call them do I look like I'm not busy? Where's the ..... go get them for me...they are in that cabinet go get them yourself... No I have no problem getting something for someone who asks or is in a real need but not to fetch because someone is too lazy to get it themself.

What usually works for me.. Is this.. If I don't get what I think my patient needs i.e. pain meds or a surgical consult for steal syndrome.. I just tell the MD. I'll be charting MY findings and the fact that YOU were called and ordered NOTHING..

Works like a charm

OK, you do not want to call the doc at 0100 for a tylenal order. so the next day you get your but chewed out. will we call him at 0200 for every order request that most docs would not care about. We would save every thing till 0200. He got the idea real quick.
Anonymous Jun 20, 2004, 11:44 AM
Sorta like the day nurses who used to call me at 1100 and say "Are you still in bed"..Wanting me to work for them or something like that.. So I started calling them at 0200 and telling them I'm awake why aren't you...Hehehehe

Next favorite revenge.

Practical jokers beware. If some one pulls a practical joke on you, NEVER repay it in the near future. Always act in a way they think you are getting ready for payback. But do nothing. Always remind them of their practical joke, and do nothing. Make them nerves for months. Create an air of paranoia where they never know when to expect being repaid, for months and months. Paranoia, what a great payback!!!
cassioo Jun 20, 2004, 2:44 PM
I am good at the paranoia for the jokers. I usually don't pull the jokes myself but make them up and my co-horts do the pulling. Here's a good one if anyone works nursery/peds it's a heart stopper you have to have a good actor too. It's called "drop the baby" DO NOT perform when any parents are around; get baby blankets and roll them up to baby size then wrap another blanket around the roll and top with a knit baby cap. Then when the prankie walks in walk with your "baby" towards them and when just not close enough trip and "drop your baby" You see prankies stop and drop their mouth wide open, dive for the baby etc it's a real good one.

We always liked toilet papering the NM's office.. And putting the skelton in her chair..

We had to take down the texas caths at Chrismas time.. The unit secretary didn't think they made good decorations.
cassioo Jun 20, 2004, 7:01 PM
more good ones. We have linen carts. Have a small nurse get in the bottom of the linen cart then when someone goes for linen she grabs the ankles
We have the extra wide plastic wrap to cover the isolettes for the premies...it's very good for gift wrapping cars.
cat toy that looks like a mouse....imagine the things you can do.
CPR dummies....call the house supervisor to come look at the pt that doesn't look too good (or just another nurse to look at your patient.
IV practice arm stickes well out of places
we've sent ransom letters to other units before with the words cut from the paper/magazines.
We have a house supervisor who I can scare just by stepping around a corner and saying hi Tony.
Unlocked lockers are always free game for rolled up tape in the jeans, things in the shoes, fill up with rolls of TP.
All of this does go on at night though not much fun in the daytime

You guys are SICK... And to think all this time I thought it was me...LOLL SICK SICK SICK..LOLL I love it...

What do you do for Halloween????

WR,,, three commas for Becca
cassioo Jun 23, 2004, 9:23 PM
well last Halloween the ice machine was out so we had an ice chest that we'd fill from a big machine. I took the baby head from the CPR doll and put it in a ziplock bag and put it on ice so when the nursery came to get ice..open the chest and there it was.
We have these charting carts with lift up tops for supplies had a big rubber rat that squeaked so put it down in there then told the chicken house super to look what people were putting in that cart and if Joint looked we'd be in trouble...he took the bait opened it up and up pops the squeaky rat he jumped across the hall.
I haven't worked a night shift in a few months but work 7/4 at 7pm-7am some things just might happen (no lit fireworks inside though)
1mg.epi Jul 4, 2004, 9:29 AM
Ok, you need to read about Mel Gibsons' practical jokes. He does things with a stuffed rat. He once put DIPP ITTY DOO (remember the green hair jell) in his hand with a plastic cockroach and shake some ones hand. SICK man. I look up to him.

After hearing what you do cassioo I would be afraid, I would be very afraid to pull a joke on you. But, it would be a hoot to work with you.
cassioo Jul 4, 2004, 10:55 AM
yep pay back is hell. I'm usually the mastermind behind things now. I can honestly say when someone asks..."I didn't do it" I work with a CST who's 23 and looks 12 (4'10" 89#) and she's always asking me to come up with something to do. We're in OB and her sister and the girls she rides to work with are in the nursery so when they all work you never know what will happen. I'm scheduled with them all tonight. I have put in for low census and might just get it. I don't do too many nights anymore thank goodness.
Good one for the day
Have a cabinet that you can put things on (I use the one leading to our OR). Put small box the size masks come in on top of cabinet and run strip of tape down box and onto cabinet. Fill lapsponge (or other such object) with ultrasound gel and place on top of box. When cabinet is opened box falls and hopefully so does lap sponge on intended victim (our victims are nursery girls who have to go to substerile room to put things on carts)
1mg.epi Jul 4, 2004, 2:50 PM
I had some one do your drop-the-baby on the director of L&D. It was a good thing she could take a joke. I think she had to go clean out her pants.
cassioo Jul 4, 2004, 5:32 PM
isn't that a great one. We have one nursery nurse who is really good at it. There are several that are good but Julie is a star she should be on stage LOL.

There is one Doc who comes to our floor who is an ABSOLUTE ass _ole!!! He brings a suede cushion to sit on because he says our chairs are filthy and uncomfortable.

About 8 months ago, Dr. Arrogant came storming onto our floor, bitching, moaning and whining and made a resident give up her seat to him. The nursing station was crowded with Docs and staff and as he plopped that suede cushion down behind him, one of the attendings threw a fart cushion under his hind end!!!! He sat down on that sucker and it let out one long loud rubber fart!!!!!

He jumped up and ran down the stairs, leaving that suede cushion behind!!! A couple of days later we got a memo from admin stating that Dr-Can't-Take-A-Joke would not be practicing in our hospital anymore and that his patient's would be covered by one of his partner's.

We glued that fart cushion onto the suede cushion, framed it, had a small plate engraved and attached to it that says "If You Can't Take the Heat - Beat Feet!"

It hangs in our nurses lounge and is a great ice breaker for new employees!!!

ok here's my latest one just done yesterday on the way home from Florida (not a work one but a good one)
My husband and I and my 5 yr old were in 1 car and my friend (a CST from work) her 6 yr old grandaughter and my 18 yr old son were in the other car. We had those walkie talkie things so we could talk to each other about where to stop etc. My 18 yr old would talk to other people and irritate them as well as me. For anyone that's seen Joy Ride (see this I don't like this type movie in general but I love this one) I'd get on that walkie talkie thing and in the JoyRide voice say Candy Cane this is Rusty Nail bring me some pink Champane. Well he'd get irritated. I called a co-hort from work who does really good voices and gave her my sons cell number and told her to call him so she did and he didn't know the number and she said This is Candy Cane I need some pink champane. He yelled at her and hung up then she called back and in her Chinese take out order voice she says what you want to order? Takes 10 minutes> Then he says Regan (his friend) is this you and she says Regan? we have no regan on menu what you want order?. It went on for several calls before he did figure out I'd put someone up to it.

I know this is old, but I am waiting for the right time. TRUST me! May never go that far, but......paybacks are a kick. The best ones are those that 'happen on their own'. You know: What goes around, comes around. :D
cassioo Dec 4, 2007, 11:57 PM
here's a more recent one...we have a newer OB-GYN and he likes to say "well in my experience....blah blah blah" what experience is that. Well we had a larger lady come in thinking she was in labor and I tried to check her but she was so big as far as I could reach she felt to be about 1-2 cm but I couldn't reach all the way through to the head so she might have been closed but she wasn't contracting. When he called in to check on her another nurse answered the phone and was telling him I'd checked her but couldn't get all the way through so he starts his lecture "well it's not 1-2 if you can't get to the head blah blah blah" so I get on the phone and tell him I know that (we're really busy also don't have time for his lectures I've been doing this longer then he has) she's not in labor is the point...well he comes in and is standing at the front nurses station going on about something else so the other nurse and I got out our "hip wader" boot covers and put them on our arms pulled up to the shoulder and went up to him and I told him in front of everyone "come on big boy get in there and check if you want to"...guess you had to be there :)

:DTexas caths may not make good xmass decor but they work great as retainers for pens on the servers, just stretch them a little over the end of a pen and vwalla instant teather with the help of a little cloth tape and or super-glue they don't wander very far. ;)

I worked as a Practice Administrator for a large Family Medicine Practice owned by a large Healthcare system. I wrote my docs' performance evaluations. For a nurse, that is the ultimate revenge. I was lucky, however, in that I had wonderful providers in my practice...

Try rating your workplace in nursyz.com.. You can post your comments online too and you can request their support to email the ratings to your hospital administrator. I did it and got a result (anonymously):)

I worked with this RN once who was totally freaked out by our morgue cart. It was a metal cart with a metal cover that had about 24 inches between the cart and the top metal cover--enough room for a very large deceased person to fit on. It was then covered with a cloth drape that almost reached the floor. She hated everything about the cart, including post mortem care and putting the pt on the cart.
Her pt died one night and we told her she had to help put the pt on the cart since it was her pt. Me and another colleague went to get the cart. I jumped on the cart and he draped the cloth cover over the top of the cart. He wheeled it into the room and when the nurse (the one always freaked out by the cart) lifted off the top, I grabbed her arm! She ran SCREAMING from the room. She was so mad at us...but later forgave us.

Anyone who doesn't deal with death on a daily basis might say we're being morbid, but if we can't lighten things up by joking around, many of us would not be able to deal....

OMG man I would get fired for the things I yelled at you guys before I calmed down.

My best friend's dad scared me on purpose like that with a HUGE live snake one time when we were fishing and as a young kid, probably 7th grade at the time, I cursed him with the force of a million sailors on crack.

Being on your end of that little prank must have been pretty awesome though. Sounds like something I'd do, though I'm not sure I could be the one to actually get in the thing.

You guys must have laughed until you had stomach cramps.

It was pretty awesome--one of our better pranks. We laughed over that one for weeks. BTW, it was kind of gross laying on the cart all covered up, knowing that dead bodies had laid there. The cart was clean, but the thought kind of grossed me out. But the joke went off great and was worth it.
