I have heard many nurses say that the pay is great, then I have also heard many nurses say that they are not getting paid enough. Whats your opinion? If its not getting paid enough, then what do you think that nurses should be paid, per hour? Thanks

Let's seeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.. Many atlethes make millions of dollars a year.. Who have they saved?? Most nurses make less than 6 figures a year... I don't know of to many that are paid enough.

I don't think you can put a price on what we do, but since not having a price won't pay the bills....I'd say.........hell, I have NO IDEA!!!! Isn't that sad?

Maybe somewhere between $35 and $40 an hour????

HI all I'm back from vacation and putting in my 2 cents worth again.
I think nurses are pretty well paid but not paid near what we're worth. Same with teachers (my dad was a teacher over 30 years)
I worked in a factory for 9 years before nursing school. When I got out of school I went to work making the same as if I'd still been at the factory. My ex-husband still works at the same factory and he doesn't make what I make now but he makes more then what a new nurse would for a couple of years. His responsibility make sure machines run so parts can be made to make freezers. Nobody dies if the freezer isn't made on time.
Nurse...well we know what a nurse has to do
Actor, ball player...millions of $$$$ to do their thing. In my opinion WAY over paid in theirs way under paid how do they get those big contracts..by saying they won't put on the show next year without the big raise.
I got a letter a few weeks ago...all the nurses at my hospital get 50 cents more per hours starting in Sept wooo hooo. So now that I'm "topped out" that might raise the top out so I won't be on top anymore so I"ll have to work longer to top out again and then get the lump sum bonus you get for being topped out.
Here's another one along similar lines...why do hospitals pay those big sign on bonuses for new nurses and what do us old dogs get to stay around...not much we keep hanging out. (there wasn't a bonus when I started)
Now aren't you all glad I'm back from vacation

I'm trying to catch up on reading all of these posts then need to check out delphi and see what kind of jobs are there that I won't be able to take right now so when I go back to work Tuesday I can whine about being back to SSDD (same sh.. different day)

I have known people who make far less that had a B.S. in business. They worked in very low paying jobs. Know another person with a geology B.S. degree. He is working as a screen printer. Have a co-worker, he has a B.S. degree in Computer science, did not make crap. He went back to school to be a nurse through a diploma program. He makes a lot more than in his "BS" computer job. I think when I look at teachers wages and other grey or white collar workers, Nurses do not do too bad. Only blue collar workers make more, like a plumber.

Like anything else, it varies by region. You won't get rich off nursing, in most cases though, you'll be able to live and raise a family with what you make.

I compare it to plumbing frequently. You work for your money, you stick your hands in places most people don't want to know about, and you get paid well for it.

You can find a few stats, figures here:

My brother has a Masters (theater design) and he is no where near the Steven Speilberg (sp) wage bracket and really probably only half my nurse bracket. My DH has 2 degrees in computer science and in the area we live he would just make a little more then he would at McD's.

I love that analogy. So I guess what we are kind of saying is that, we make decent money for our education and where we put our hands.

Places our hands have to go, Hmmmmmmm.
Today I have a Perivulvar Abscess dressing to change. My boss told the patient that the weekend nurse was a man. She said that it was not problem. Well no one asked ME. Got a female nurse on standby with the iodoform gauze and a flashlight.
