    Hello Everyone,

Was doing some research on the web and came across this unfamiliar term. . . turns out its a fancy name for a nurse cosmetician with the added bonus that they can do botox shots, skin peels, collagen replacement and provide other services under the direction of a physician.

Makes for a cool career alternative for someone who's into looking great. . . these are a few nurses that have run with the opportunity.

Medical Esthetics: Sorting it Out by Bonnie T. Canavino, Isnow.com-esthetics:"What is "Medical Esthetics"? It's a big question these days. Since the medical community and the private skin care industry have not clearly defined the term, spas are using all sorts of language, including Para-medical Esthetics, Medical Esthetics, Clinical Esthetics and Medi-Spa esthetics. It's all a little confusing, so don't feel like your out of the loop. But lets clarify some of this language from a medical standpoint. Medical Esthetics and Clinical Esthetics refer to nurses and licensed technical practitioners working in a doctor's office. Medi-Spa Esthetics refers to a Licensed Esthetician working under the watchful eyes of a doctor on location. Note: not all states allow Licensed Estheticians to perform cosmetic esthetic medical procedures with or under doctor supervision. So where does this leave spas and salons?"

I am the Executive Director/RN of my husbands plastic surgery center, but I also have many years of trauma nursing experience. When people ask me about this field I have to be honest and discourage them. A lot of nurses try to get into it, and then are deeply disappointed as the jobs are few. The talented surgeons that most people would want to associate their career and reputation with usually hang on to their estheticians for years. I am flooded with resumes weekly. I guess in summary, do your research before you jump into it. I tried to tell this to a girlfriend of mine, and three years later she is still unemployed in the field because she refuses to work for a spa or an obgyn that is trying to break into the cosmetic field.
An additional caveat at this time is the economy is VERY much affecting all aesthetic surgeons and I know a lot that are having to let go of their estheticians.
JMHO, just wanted to offer my personal experience.

Very interesting, sounds like working for a surgeon. Thanks for being frank. Know a lot of nurse who would like to go into the field, doesn't sound like there are as many opportunities as we hoped.
