nope I don't think so I think seniority and what you were hired to gets you your schedule and assignments are based on patient need/acuity and nurse experience or need for experience

welcome back tiredofthesystem.

I'll agree with you here, in that some instances looks might have an affect on receiving benefits from your supervisor or whoever it might be.

It shouldn't, and anyone worth a crap in a management position won't allow that to happen, however I am sure it does.

And I can't say that if I was a single guy and some hot single nurse was flirting with me and asking for a certain day off or whatever, that I wouldn't likely be inclined to assist her in getting her way, as long as it wasn't a big deal.

I think there's a difference between THAT and giving one nurse a light patient load and burdoning another nurse with additional patients. That would be just plain wrong.

Maybe I'm out of the "big" loop but never in my nearly thirty year long medical career in over ten different facilities; in subacute, acute and critical care and in four states have I ever seen the appearance or appeal of a staff member procure a better assignment. I've seen many things but I can honestly say I haven't seen this.

what makes you ask the question of do looks get you a better position? i would ask does knowing the boss get a better position? does being popular get a better position? does coming from a more esteemed school get you a better position? i would never think looks get you a better position. i think in nursing it's about who you know, how well liked are you, and where did you grad from. the band blink 182 often refers to themselves as "ugly" but they have a big fan club.

LOL, orange juice is your friend... so, no excuses for misbehavior!

My wife is a very attractive RN, but also highly skilled. Therefore, she certainly does not get a lower patient ratio. If anything, I'd think the nurse-patient ratio is based more on the acuity level of patients & nursing staff available. Regards to an actual better schedule... not hardly.

BTW, I'd consider myself a good looking RN, too. However, I'd bet the Army Medical Department could careless regards to good looks of their ANC officers. ;)

IMHO, this is a silly Thread.

you write some funny stuff tiredofthesystem but i have to agree with mag this is silly. it's like saying do nurses with shoe size 8-10 get better positions?

Tiredofthesystem wrote:Does anyone think that looks get you a better schedule? With a lower patient ratio? Just wondering.

Conley Curious
Does the size of a male nurse's..... shoe get him a better schedule or a lower patient ratio? That question was just as ridiculous.

Welcome back. Remember when we do not play nice we get put in time out :)

I'm not the cutie I was 20 years ago (4 kids can do that to you) but I do like my schedule pretty well. I guess "I'm not as good as I once was but I'm as good once as I ever was"

Now now Short-sterrr. .Im gonna have to start calling you "mcDREAMY" if you do not cease the silly jargon. :)

So.. in a nutshell, If I look like William Shatner, and My Wife looks like Rosey O'Donell, I will still get a non-preferential treatment of a good wing or a bad wing? Ok.. fair enough. I just felt like in a very mundane environment, that there prolly were some nurses out there who perhaps maybe werent getting the attention at home and even wore provocative scrubs and perfumes. I could be wrong. I guess I really do not know the guidlines of what constitutes a hot woman in a very sterile environment, and how that plays out in the real world. I need to stop watching Greys Anatomy! :)

Considering that 95% (give or take) of nurses are women, that's like asking if a gorgeous woman could get out of a speeding ticket when pulled over by a female cop.

The female cop isn't going to be impressed, neither are female nurse managers.

Is there favoritism, politics, "special treatment" in nearly every work environment, of course. However, looks alone won't get you too far in a female dominated profession.

How far it goes is a function of what the other nurses on the unit will tolerate.

A better question might be, a nurse is losing her edge, starting to miss things and make mistakes. The nurses working with know it, nurse manager and patients are starting to suspect. How far will the other nurses go to cover and compensate.

Can see that happening nearly everywhere I go.

Sincerely,

Rosie Odonnel was probably a pretty good one but WILLIAM SHATNER?

I'm not a woman, but I think I can say whether a guy is good looking or not and William SHATner would not be on my list!

you can't draw from what somebody writes online of what they're like in person. why are any of us online? couldn't we all be doing something better than being online? what does looking good and getting a job have to do with anything about nursing? i don't understand the concept. nursing isn't hollywood. nursing is more about discipline than looks.

My experience is if you are a person who gets the job done with minimal whining (we all have bad days) and make an effort to get to know your co-workers it doesn't matter what you look like. Nursing is hard enough without making it a petty popularity contest. CDC regulations about fingernails and such make it hard to be a fashion plate at work and I can only imagine what a pain Big Breasts would be at the end of 12 hours of backbreaking lifting and turning patients. If you want to meet "beautiful" nurses and doctors and have sex in exam rooms then I suggest you become and actor because it really doesn't happen that much in real life.

Peace and Namaste

Thanks Happygrl...............your the best thing since............since.. Pez? no wait! 4play! No! Charles Engals! ( see: Micheal Landon ) lol... You my boo-boo!

on a serious note, I really believe that in an exhaustive and mundane environment, that the last thing an overworked charge-nurse ( lets say male), wants to see, is a more-overworked, unattractive, burnt out nurse with postal-like tendancies, and a vile attitude towards anything that has to do with unsolicited flirting... lol..

He's gonna pick the hooters-type chick who ran, stumbled, and landed in a pair of scrubs, and might even be seeking a overworked, hormonally raging intern with nothing to lose except his rage of content for the innately unrealistic working conditions, and 50% of his mortgage.......AND GIVE HER* the 2 patient to 1 nurse ratio! :)

:) Ok .. Ok.. I know Im reaching... Aint I?
hsieh Oct 27, 2006, 5:21 PM
i disagree tiredofthesystem. what type of enviroment are you talking about anyways? a hospital? there are other places to work. nothing stays the same forever. if a nurse is getting special treatment it won't last forever. there is so much turnover in hospitals nothing is going to remain the same. where do you get these ideas from? hugh heffner?

Conflict? I have no issue with conflict. What's going on here is a mixture- conflict, personal jabs and lewd remarks all stimulated by a harmless if not silly entry. Speaking for myself, it stopped being entertaining awhile ago.

Hardly.

Those who know me would laugh out loud at me being described as frigid. Was it hard for you to master head games and snide remarks or do you just relate this way to people when your blood sugar runs low?

hsieh wrote:does anybody think left handedness gets you a better "nurse/patient ratio"?

Well considering that left handed people think more from the right (logical) side of the brain then they would know that the only place you might get a a two:0ne ratio is in a small community L&D - but it's a body fluids bonanza so if you don't want to get splashed stay out of the way!

We had 3:1 ratio on a labor until a patient was Pushing then it went to 1:1.
But mother baby was 7:1 which if you count the babies is 14:1

I can't think of any charge nurse on any med surge floor getting away with giving one nurse a 2:1 while others had a full load. Untless the two patients were complicated and unstable and needed more intensive care. Also that nurse would probably get the new admits.

Thanks for the groovy diatribe happy. ;)

Quick question though. Do you think Mike Brady was in the closet? :)

I want to make us all some smores, and hope for a better tomorrow.

Thanks for being patient guys....you've all been a 13 to 1 ratio on the groovy train in this thread but nothing short of toastyness.

Hey I'm a lefty >>>>God made a few perfect people and the rest he made right handed....but I work in a community hospital and I wish I had 1:1 pushing is the only time (I do get that at the larger women's hospital I work perdiem) we have less deliveries but also less nurses.

On the Mike Brady...he wasn't in the closet but Robert Reed was.

Hey Tired,

Guess what. I'm tired now too. As I figured, you're a "need the last word" sort. I checked this thread after a few days and there you are trashing me. I noticed that you had no reply to my last post- just your characteristic nonsense. Some here are obviously impressed with what they perceive as your wit, but I think you have bonafide social pathology. Anyway, is this where I surrender? Like I really care..... Look! There's my white flag. I'm done. Feel free to throw your last jab and don't worry, I won't feel compelled to reply.
