What attracted you to the field of Nursing: The need for a challenging field where if I became bored with an area I could move into and learn about other areas.

When I had my 1st child I was working in a hot factory on production line..I'd been to college for accounting but quit to have her and get married. I'd always loved babies and babysitting and I saw the nurses rocking the babies (this is July when it's burning around here) and I thought by gosh I can rock babies in air conditioning too LOL didn't think about doing anything but rocking them and feeding them

I WANTED TO BE A NURSE LIKE MY BIG SISTER, THEN I WANTED TO TAKE CARE OF THE ELDERLY, HOWEVER I CAN REMEMBER IN HIGH SCHOOL, I WANTED TO BE IN THE MILITARY AND BE A NURSE. I HAVE DONE BOTH, AND NOW I CAN SAY THAT NURSING ALLOWS YOU TO BE AND DO WHATEVER YOU WANT.

I never wanted to be a nurse when I was growing up. All that blood! Yuck! After I was married, turned out I needed a job. My Mom worked as a nursing assistant in a local nursing home and suggested I try it. During my time there I worked with a wonderful nurse whose compassion was awe inspiring. I thought that if I could be half the nurse she was, I would have accomplished something important in my life. I was an LPN for 20 years before going back to school and becoming an RN then achieved a BSN. This all started 30 years ago and I still get excited about nursing! What a wonderful profession we are in. A few years back I called that nurse on the phone and told her how she had inspired me. She was then in her 70's and long since retired. I don't think she even remembered me. But I'll never forget her and what she did for me.

What Attracted You To The Field of Nursing? I am in general always concerned about humanity and life. However, I was considering other fields until I discovered that nursing was a profession that required extensive knowledge and skill and that through this I would be able to be an advocate for quality healthcare. I made that decision 25 years ago without any regrets.

Originally, after the service as a corpsman. Nursing attracted me one as a job I like doing and two as a place to meet women. I ended up married to a nurse and still in it 4 decades later. Must have been a good decision.

Job security played into it for sure, and the pay isn't too shabby either. Not many places where you can earn $20-30 plus an hour off the bat with a two year college degree and nursing license.

Make no mistake, we do work for it. Like a plumber, we earn our pay working in sometimes ugly working conditions.

Actually, I was semi-joking about the money. The reason I went into nursing was because I was frustrated by the invisible lines of scope of practice between my prior field, respiratory therapy and my current field, nursing. Now I'm frustrated again...

What Attracted You To The Field of Nursing? I was 17 and that was so long ago—I am not sure I remember! I have always loved everything medical—it seemed a natural way to pursue the medical field. In those days women were nurses—and we wore caps and all white!

First got the idea to become a nurse as a phlebotomist watching the nurses do their thing. Saw them every morning doing patient care, got the idea in my head that "I could do that too" :)

Yeah but most of the facilities won't let you show your tats anymore - I'm not really a tattoo person but some of them are quite artistic and well done. The last facility I worked at had a nursing superviser who ran around with these great big bandaids to make people cover their tats. It was really stupid looking. Instead of people seeing a tattoo patient's were left to wonder if their nurse had some kind of infectious disease under all that.

And in California where folks are pretty liber al about these things

It's a challenging subject. It seems strange that individual rights which most of the time are championed above most other things, are compromised over the issue of tattoos. A person can wear very seductive clothing or multiple piercings at work but must cover the tattoo? My facility is pretty relaxed about tattoos however there are certain departments whose directors are more strict and want to try to interpret what might be offensive. On a similar note, we have a kid working in the dietary department who usually wears "guages" in his ears however, must remove them for work. What is left are the pathetic remains of his once fine earlobes hanging like flesh colored spaghetti from the sides of his head. Ridiculous, really. I think I'd rather have him wear the "hubcaps" in his ears, he might look better. I don't think there's a right answer.
Teeituptom Jul 23, 2011, 1:46 PM
I have more than a few tattoos. Some are visible at work. There is only one that does not get seen at work. I have a very large tattooed Marijuana leaf on my calf. Not because I smoke pot . But because I support the legalization of MJ. I also stand for the ending of this crazy, costly, ineffective, ridiculous Drug War waged by the Federal Gov't

Attracted to the filed of nursing

It attracted me to the field of nursing because I like to experience the feeling of into an O.R because later on I will took up masterals about medical surgical nursing. I am curious about the inside body of human in my own eyes so, it attracted me to this field.

I work with the elderly. I was attracted to the field because as a child, my grandfather lived with us. My parents both worked full time so, we took care of each other. That relationship stuck with me throughout my whole life, and I realized, as an undergrad, that I wanted to help the elderly and their families overcome the struggles of the role reversal and guilt associated with helping an aging loved one. Caring for the elderly isn't the most traditional route but, I love it. I am a male nurse, and it can be difficult to deal with emotions from time to time. However, without my job, I would have never been able to fill the void I had after my grandfather passed before I went to college.

Nursing...It was the most popular course during our time and I want to be in the medical field, because I think people in this field are highly regarded and well respected...it’s nice to see nurses with their caps on and their white uniforms!

Wave of students entering the nursing school and the news all over that nursing is an in-demand course anywhere in the world so there will be an almost certain employment after graduation and board exams! A lot of my friends wanted to be in this field so, they actually influenced me a bit..But learned to love this profession later on!
Ricu Jan 6, 2013, 12:23 AM
I like your enthusiasm but before you plunge ahead, job shadow a nurse and ask a lot of questions.

Good luck
