I hope it works, and the working conditions and patient safety improve in Texas.

Why does it take unions and government mandates to get hospitals to put patient safety first??

I realize that I sound so naive...the almighty dollar, after all! But a good name is highly to be prized, and when the community knows that a particular hospital provides GOOD NURSING CARE consistently, won't patients ASK to be sent there?? Won't nurses want to work there??

I know I would.

Unions in Texas? Texas is a Right to Work state, so how does the NNOC apply regards to the state level, i.e. Texas RN's?

This is a very interesting topic for me [& my wife] since we hold Texas RN license.

The sad fact is that Texas nurses do not have the support they need to do their job. But wait, change in the wind direction is coming  http://www.statesman.com/opinion/content/editorial/stories/02/21/21othertakes_edit.html

Right to work laws only restrict the concept of 'closed shops', that is a nurse may not be compelled to join-pay for collective bargining. Nurses may organize and compell bargining thruout America.
Look at the middle class in right to work states compared to unrestricted states. Workers who tolerate those laws are stupid and thier lawmakers are corrupt...

:( I recently interviewed for a day traveler position in a Texas hospital. The RN manager was very nice. When I heard that the nurse to patient ratio was 6 or 7, I didn't blink an eye. Been there, done that. BUT when I heard that the nurse does it all: baths, wound care, glucose checks, vital signs, etc. as well as general nursing duties and few if any CNAs available, I backed off like lightening. I will not challange my license with a load like that. I wonder how any RN can do the job well and safely at this hospital. By the way, the nurse manager called me back twice.
I don't know if a union would help, but nurses have to stand up for themselves sometime.

Funny thing is that I've heard that there are very few openings in Texas. Many nurses I've traveled with have told me they can't get jobs in their home towns so they've resorted to traveling.

Can it be that bad if no one is leaving to allow new nurses to work in Texas hospitals?

Fired ICU nurses

Is this firing legal? I thought Texas honored the safe harbor clause.
Enerjan Jul 21, 2007, 9:13 AM
I am an RN here in Texas fighting for new legislature to be passed with manditory ratios, whistleblowing protection (we have none), and the right to be a patient advocate without fear of retaliation. I have never practiced anywhere but Texas, but was introduced to a whole new life during a rally in California. Or bill did not pass the legislature, didn't even make it out of committee, but we, as Texas nurses have fianlly found our voice, and we will not be so easy to shut up. I am interested in your feedback concerning unions, as I have never been a member. I do know that if we want to keep our job, we have been forced to take unsafe patient assignments, and pray that no one is injured. The Safe Harbor that we have in Texas is pretty worthless. If a nurse claims Safe Harbor, not only are they chastised by managers, there is a 7 page form to be filled out, front and back, by the nurse, and then SHE is reviewed!! It also states that you are only protected if YOU don't cause injury during your shift of unsafe staffing. There is NO agency to report to here. It is reported to the hospital, reviewed by the hospital, and the BNE of Texas. The Texas Nurses Assoc, who by the way DOES NOT support our bill, keeps talking about the "nursing shortage" as the reason for high nurse:patient ratios, but if that's true, why is it that when the census is low, we are cancelled!! Low, by their standards is 4:1. We have begun to inform the public of why it takes so long to answer their call light. We were not "allowed" to tell them it was because we had 6 other patients, so they just thought we didn't care, or were taking a coffee break. But I refuse to be silent any longer, job or no!!
txnexus Jul 23, 2007, 11:38 PM
Safe harbor does nothing to protect a nurses employment. Safe Harbor simply compels an institution to conduct a peer review of the working conditions on that particular day on that particular shift. The nurses license who files Safe Harbor is protected if the peer review finds that the standard of care was not met. Many nurses tend to spout off about Safe Harbor yet I'm willing to bet that very few are aware of the significant amount of paperwork that must be filed in order for Safe Harbor to be effective.
txnexus Jul 23, 2007, 11:40 PM
Regarding the situation at Mesquite. It is the general consensus that the nurses that were fired were a "plant" by the union to gain sympathy. This is a similiar tactic that has been tried numerous times over the past century.
Enerjan Jul 24, 2007, 6:57 AM
Where did you get your info concerning the nurses in Mesquite being a plant? I know all three who were fired and IT WAS NOT a plant!! One of the nurses that was fired is a single mother with 3 children to raise, and was scrambling to replace her income. Administration told them that they "were going to make an example of them"(the nurses). So please do not assume that you know the situation, when you obviously don't.

Im new to nursing Im a part time CNA working on becoming an RN, my full time job is and has been working for a construction company that has one aspect completley unionized, I was taking a look at one of the websites provided and found these untruths and have reviewed them with alot of the men here that are unionized and some I knew to be untrue even before asking around. Can someone offer some counterpoints on how a nursing union would be different in these aspects?

Untruth

"You only need to vote if you want the union."
This is absolutely untrue! If you do not vote you have actually helped the union just as much as someone who voted yes (Read The Math). You must voice your opinion by voting.
* this is true, you have to vote!

Untruth

"Your bonuses will not be affected."
This is negotiable! There is no guarantee you will continue to collect bonuses under the union; there is actually a high probability you will no longer receive your bonuses.
* bonuses have been replaced with work get togethers for moral

Untruth

"You will receive a 7% increase in pay for the next 2 years."
The unions can, and probably will, take 3% for "economic improvements" After union dues, this will leave you with less than the 4% you could have received without a union.
* many many complain of this here

Untruth

"Your schedule will not be affected."
Are you one of those employees who has been working a set schedule for years? If so, prepare for the high possibility that will change. Unions have historically forced employees to rotate weekend and holidays, regardless of previously agreed upon arrangements. No more "working it out" with your co-workers.
* haha yeah this ones a killer, Im not union so I dont have to deal with it

Untruth

"Unions will provide more staff."
There is a national nurse shortage that the unions can do nothing about. The unions do not have a magical factory full of nurses just waiting for the hospital to become unionized. In reality, the unions frequently have the opposite effect since many quality nurses will not even apply at unionized facilities.
* this one doesnt apply to my job we actaully have more workers than we know what to do with but I cant see how unions can pull workers out of thin air

Untruth

"Voting the unions in will make a statement to the hospital and its management."
Don't be fooled, the hospital and its management will not have their incomes and careers influenced by the unions, only you will. Any additional costs incurred (i.e. payroll increases to fund union dues) will eventually be passed down to our customers, the patients. Unions are not patient advocates like us, their one and only motivation is to increase their membership and dues. They are not some human rights organization attempting to make the world a better place.
* union work is extremely expensive to our customers and has cost us service contracts, my end starts up the job the union does service and maintenance contracts, alot of work ends when my side hands it over

Untruth

"The union will provide me with a pension."
The unions will not be providing pensions for employees. If you are being told otherwise by a union representative, simply ask for it in writing.
* they have pensions here but try moving on to a non union position, you loose everything you have built up trapping many workers in a dead end job, management changes and it sucks? too damn bad your stuck for life or loose out on your pension

Thank you, mdlangs, for the info concerning unions. I have never been a member of a union, and appreciate your input. I know there are pros and cons to both sides, and I certainly want to make an informed decision concerning this issue. So far, I have been involved in trying to get legislation passed for mandated nurse:patient ratios, and whistleblowing protection; however our bill never made it out of committee, and our next step seems to be moving towards unionizing. I am grateful for all of the input I have rec'd, and am still "on the fence" at this present time.
mdlangs Jul 31, 2007, 4:17 PM
no doubt - Im still trying to read into it more too - Im only a CNA and this seems to be a big issue that I will undoubtetly cross, I think whistle blower protection and ratios are a great thing to be looking into as well but not sure how a union will help with the ratio problems still and yeah thats the stinkiest part even being a CNA, I feel horrible I can never give a patient even enough time for a small chat before Im whizzing to the next change or lift or feeding and that wears me down quite a bit mentally:eek:
Enerjan Aug 1, 2007, 10:03 AM
I remember when I was a CNA back when I was in nursing school, and I was VERY naive. I was working on an extended care unit, and we had a patient on dialysis, bilat amputee from knees down. The nurses told me to go in and give him a bed bath before his dialysis. So I got all my stuff together and went into the room. I noticed that his fingertips were black and crusty, and there was a really foul smell. But I "bucked up" because I was gonna be a nurse!! Anyway, I was about to give him a washcloth to bathe his privates, when I removed his boxers, and saw that his p-nis was black and shriveled up, and when he began bathing it, part of it fell off!! That was when I decided to be and L&D nurse, women only!! Kisses!!
Texasunionguy Aug 8, 2007, 8:56 PM
1st off on the untruths can go both ways unions are only as strong as your voting members. mebers ratify the contracts. same with bonuses and other benifiets provided by the employer. 2nd in Texas under Texas law any person has the right to join any union, organization, association or like mind professional and have that group represent them. Unions if run by the members are good. Rember that one and you are right you must vote every employee must vote. "A man with out a vote is a man with out a voice" President Lyndon Johnson. RN's in Texas need protection and need to be free to be patient advocates. There is but one group, association, or union working with RN's on this matter and it is the National Nurses Organizing Committee. You all want more information come and see NNOC members and RNs testify at a public hearing in Mesquite Texas Aug. 15th at 10 am. here are the details.

Dallas Fort Worth Concerned Citizens Panel ■ 2504 W. Park Row Suite B5, Box 128 Pantego, TX. 76013 ■ dfwccp@gmail.com

Are Dallas and Fort Worth Hospitals Safe?

Is Profit Placed Before Care?

Does Your Hospital Have Safe Ratios?

If you can not answer all three of these questions then you and your family need to come to the public hearing on safe nurse to patient ratios. Dallas Fort Worth Concerned Citizens Panel is holding an open public hearing on the issues of safe nurse to patient ratios to answer the three questions above and to openly discuss this issue.
The organizations invited to provide testimony are The Texas Hospital Association, Dallas County Hospital Board, Tarrant County Hospital Board, Dallas Regional Health Center Mesquite, National Nurses Organizing Committee, RNs, and Both Dallas and Tarrant County Commissioners Courts. The National Nurses Organizing Committee and several area RNs have accepted the invitation to testify and will testify at this hearing on safe-patient ratios. It is important for citizens to show up and hear the testimony and why our hospitals are unsafe. Citizens are welcome to submit testimony on problems they or their family has had at hospitals.

Come hear why RNs are in constant threat of termination for simply standing up on behalf of their patients in the name of providing the best quality care.

The Hearing will convene at 10 am on Aug. 15th 2007 at 1527 North Galloway Drive in Mesquite, Texas at the Mesquite Fine Arts Center. The Panel will take testimony from 10am-1pm at the latest and the will deliberate for until around 2 pm and render an opinion. During panel deliberations, Registered Nurses and NNOC Representatives will take questions and comments in a town-hall style public forum. This will be an excellent opportunity for the public, Nurses, and the NNOC to examine ways in which we can make sure that patients get the optimal care that they deserve.

I have friends in several different places in the country who are RNs just like me. They have worked in Texas other states, too.

They all say they liked nursing in Texas best! They have told horrible stories about union problems and strange regulations preventing a nurse from provinding quality care.

I would never join a union and I would never strike. This isn't waitressing at Hooters, if we don't provide care, people can die.

If you don't like the way things are where you work, give your two weeks notice and quit. Let HR know what you don't like. If this happens enough, they will get the idea. However, if you are never happy, no matter where you are working, perhaps the problem isn't with the hospitals.

Ive been nursing in Texas for well over 20 yrs plus. I think Texas nursing is wonderful. I have never doubted that all that I do to advocate for patient care issues, has always been supported and appreciated by administration. I have never been threatened or even felt threatened or insecure at work. Now could we get better security guards where I am at, that would be nice. I have heard terrible stories about "Safe Harbour" But from what I have seen, those are really isolated incidents with other issues there also.
I make good money here. I have raised my 7 kids. I feel secure in my work. They work me appropiately. Yes the ER gets busy, but thats the life in ER. It is what we do, and most of us love it. Those that dont become school nurses or something.
Now I am not a pro union type. But I am not against them, I think they are overinflated. I see unions as promoters of mass mediocrity. I would like to say one thing to all pro unionists. Remember a "Scab" protect and promotes the healing of a wound. And should always be admired.
Will Texas ever really unionize its hospitals, I really do not see that happening.
