I don't have any but I know there must be some out there.
The only supersticious thing we have on our unit is the "osler fly."
They say if you see the osler fly buzzing around, someone is going to die rather quickly.
Supposedly there's a ghost on 4th floor of our hospital, but I've never seen or heard anything. One of our hospital supervisors says that she was walking down a hallway when a cold, weird feeling sort of wooshed through her and she had a feeling that the person in the room just below her died. Sure enough, they had, and she insists she felt the soul leave the building. Weird!
One of my residents had said in Mid Feb. of one year that he'd be going home with his girlfriend by his birthday, which is in March. He really DID 'go home'....he died 2 weeks before his birthday. Eerie, i tell ya. 'Cat'
not really a ghost but someone thought it was: I worked ortho/neuro and the man in the room right across from the nurses station was in a coma. His 2 BIG sisters were sitting by his bed. The bed had some catch in electronic controls. The head of the bed suddenly sat up and the sistas came running out of the room screaming :)
In the ER I used to work in, one of our trauma rooms was haunted. When the room was empty, we kept the curtain over the door closed, and one night when it was really quiet, the curtain started swinging back & forth, like a little kid was playing with it- there is no air vent near the curtain, so it couldn't have been anything like that, but we went to open the curtain, and on the monitor in the room, the O2 sat was 100%, with a perfect pleth wave, but the probe was dangling from a hook on the wall, swinging back & forth. Also, on another night, in the same trauma room, the monitor started alarming out of nowhere- in the room, the monitor showed a third-degree block, but there was no patient in the room, the leads were just hanging there. A few days before, we had had a patient in that room die- he had been in thrid degree block when he got to the ER- Creepy!!!
Im an LVN. And was doing homecare at the time of my ghost story. This is my first and hopefully only ghost. This happened to me last year in Aug of 2006. I was doing homecare for a terminally ill patient- not immenet however-through a registry for a company. This was my seconed night shift with him. I hadnt done nights in a while and was sleepy and found myself dozeing off for a few minutes at a time intermetinally this seconed night at about after midnight.
I had just started dateing someone very seriously, and he moved into my house after about 3 months of us dateing ( whom Im now married to).
Anyway- my patient began to decline rapidly and peacefully- CHF I believe. He had been talking jibberish all of a sudden- while in like a wakeing sleep state, and this had gone on for hours- when I had fallen asleep while charting at a desk next to him at about 2am.
I woke up suddenly- because his respirations had changed to being a different noise from what they had been and his constant jibberish talking-to nothing but a different type of breathing - I awoke to see someone in the corner next to his oxygen tank in the room.
It looked just like my now husband who was my boyfriend at the time.
It was vivad.
It looked like my husband- just looking at me.
I got scared out of my skin, rubbed my eyes, checked on my patient, and had awoken fully and he was gone, but I still felt something there for hours afterward. Shortly thereafter my patient died suddenly- even though he was talking, and eating and had good vitals. Just all of a sudden.
I swear it was my boyfriend at the time, but it might have been his dad who looked very much like my husband/ boyfriend at an earlier age and who had allready passed and who was very close to my husband all his life.
I dunno?>??????
I have 2 good stories from nursing, and a few from private life that I will share another time. I worked at the VA in Asheville in 1997, and was first assigned to the beautiful new nursing home that they had built. They had these neat small TVs that would pull out on an arm from the wall and you could position them directly in front of the patients. There was one, however, in a semiprivate room where the patient in the first bed was essentially vegetative. This TV, whether turned on or off, emitted a constant "lub-dub", exactly the sound of a heart beating. I SWEAR it's true. The only way to make it stop was to disconnect the cable from the TV. We all freaked daily when we had to go in there. Maintenance could not answer the question "WHY?".
My other story is in Columbus, NC, where I worked for 5 years in a small OR. We had a great urologist there by the name of Randy Williams, who unfortunately died from carbon monoxide poisoning while at a conference in Jackson Hole, WY. We had stereos in all the ORs, and after Dr. Williams passed away, the radios would come on by themselves at all hours. This could get pretty spooky when you are in a room alone at all hours of the night on call. Some of us thought that the stereos had a timer, but they did not. It was almost always the same song, Rod Stewart's "Some Guys have all the Luck". One day during a cataract surgery I was playing a CD, and this particular doc was very picky that the music always be "soothing", Muzak sounding stuff. Suddenly, the CD quit and the blamed stereo went to AM radio, with a blaring static! No one listens to AM radio! As far as I know, this stereo had NEVER been on AM radio! We all thought that it was just Dr. Williams picking on the eye doc, because he was so anal all the time and Doc W was real laid back! Oh yeah, and the automatic flushing toilet in the PACU would flush frequently by itself with no one in the bathroom. That we thought was another doc, who died long before I went to work there. Just food for thought!
Supposedly the OR 13 at St Francis in Tulsa is haunted; guess on of the CV surgeons was in the middle of a case, table started to levitate, scared the crap out of him. He refuses to ever step near the room. Then a few years ago, one of our Pharm Techs was restocking the OR rooms during a REALLY horrible storm (rain, tornado, hail, huge winds--other than the tornados), stepped into OR 13 to hear an ECG rhythm on the screen (she had been a monitor tech also), saw the rhythm go from SR to VF to asystole within 30 seconds. She turned-tail, ran upstairs to her mom on the Cardiac Stepdown (where I worked at the time to hear this story) and freaked out!
At my current assingment in OKC, I was told to watch out for the "little girl"; many pts had complained about a little girl with long blond pony-tails, typically right before they died. Now when I have to go to one of our closed ICUs for supplies (low-census), I have to keep my head down so that I don't see reflections in the doors to the ICU rooms. (Kind of a believer of the ghosts)
This one isnt really a ghost story but it was really weird. While I was working in a nursing home, I was tending to a patient that was unable to move and unable to talk. It took 2 people to move her around in bed because she was really stiff. One day when me and my fellow cna (who happened to be a male) was moving her, she sat straight up and yelled "Dont you put your hands on me you filty animal or I will get my shot gun!"... and then she went right back to her normal state... we told our charge nurse and she didnt have an explanation about what would cause that...
Another story would be the ONE AND ONLY time i worked 3rd shift at a nursing home. In this place we had a resident living room that was home to 2 really big birds in cages. We drape a piece of cloth over the cages so they will go to sleep. We were all sitting at the nurses station when all of a sudden the birds came flying out of the living room, no one was in there to let them out... and when we went back in there... the cloth and door was still like they were suppose to be.
I have heard heart sounds in empty ORs, too. This isn't a ghost story, but it is kind of funny.......my friend and coworker were recovering an elderly patient one day after surgery, and this particular woman was an elderly retired nurse who was very alert preop but was somnolent after, and we really wanted her to respond so that we could get her out of PACU and go home! Nothing fazed the old girl! No sternal rubs, no repositioning, nothing....Finally my coworker and I were just shooting the breeze about someday being retired old nurses and being "crotchety", when my friend says in jest and parody "I NEED A NURSE". The old woman sat bolt upright and said "Where?". We laughed until we cried! Someday we too shall be there.......
I used to work in a nursing facility many, many years ago. The place was supposed to be haunted by the first owner. As i would walk through the halls at night , at the end of the east hall my hair would stand up all over my body....creepy. Btu one night a call light came on and the resident crying told us that her bed went away from the wall. We pushed it back trying to reassure her that we would keep an eye out. After leaving the room, 10 min later she called again and the bed was back where it was the first time, so we told the previous owner by name that she needed to stop waking the resident and left the room placing the bed back again. Strangely enough the bed never moved again that night. We told other staff about it laughing, but other stories about other beds were told to us. So when ever anything strange happened we would just call the problem by name and tell her she needed to stop. Weird, Most definitely but at least I wasn't the only person who experienced it there.
I don't work at that facility anymore, but I have been told that it still happens from time to time. I just tell them to do what we did, and it seems to still work.
Now one room's call light is going off unexpectedly, especially when the hall is empty. (Residents are at program during day) We have cameras checking down the hall, and no-one's ever there. I 'think' it may be the one little old lady who promised to come back and say hi every so often. :p
One story I heard was about a guy who died in a chair and rigor had already set in so he was strapped to a slab. While the janitor was cleaning in there when a strap broke and the dead man sat up. The janitor ran screaming from the room and refused to ever work there again.
