The Pediatric Nursing Certification Board (PNCB) is the leading certification organization for pediatric nursing. Established in 1975 as a nonprofit organization, the mission of the PNCB is to develop certification exams and certification maintenance programs to support the delivery of quality health care to children and their families.

Through interdisciplinary collaboration, pediatricians, pediatric nurse and pediatric nurse practitioner educators and clinicians design and evaluate the unique certification and maintenance activities of the PNCB. The Board of Directors of the PNCB appoints pediatric nurse practitioners, pediatric nurses, pediatricians and educators known for their knowledge, expertise and skill in pediatric health care to serve on the various exam committees of the PNCB. The National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) has granted recognition of the validity of the PNCB and its certification process through national NCCA accreditation.

Since 1977 the PNCB has certified more than 11,000 CPNPs. The PNCB's national exams for pediatric nurse practitioners and pediatric nurses are unique in that they are the only certification exams collaboratively designed by CPNPs, CPNs, and pediatricians. The National Primary Care and Acute Care Exam for PNPs and the Certified Pediatric Nurse (CPN) exam are recognized and endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the Society of Pediatric Nurses (SPN), the Association of Faculties of Pediatric Nurse Practitioner programs (AFPNP) and the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners (NAPNAP). The PNCB is a member of the American Board of Nursing Specialties (ABNS).
