Hello. My name is shannon and I am about to finish my first semester of my senior year, so I only have one more semester to go. YEAHHHHH! I never thought I would make it through this semester, I have been so stressed out, but I did make it and so far I have a B in one class and am borderline A/B in my others. Anyways, I found this site because I did a google search about army nursing. I plan on commissioning as a army nurse when I graduate in December, and I wanted to get some advice about how the process occurs of being commissioned as a nurse in the army nurse corp. Any other advice people have for me would be welcomed.THANK YOU!

Welcome aboard and congrats on your scores thus far; being a former Marine, military personnel deeply appreciate the Nurses who do all they can to make us more comfortable!

Hi, shannon! Nice to meet you! :waving: MagRed, another Moderator, is in the Army; I am sure he'd be able to tell you a few things when he can. Right now, he's a nurse 'in the Sand Box', so give him some time.

Good luck in school and with Boards, and drop by often.

Shannon and to the other members of this thread,
Let me introduce myself, I am an Army Nurse. I have been one for 8 years now. I have been in the Army for 20 years this July. The first 12 I was on Tanks. Currently my job is that of a Medical Recruiter.
The process of getting into the Army Nurse Corps is pretty simple.
1. Meet with the recruiter and decide what you want and how it fits into the ANC.
2. Take a physical and begin gathering needed information for your application.
3. Send you COMPLETED Application up to Health Services Directorate for approval. Yes, there is a board you have to pass to be accepted.
4. Finish School, Pass your NCLEX, Do great and wonderful acts for the world.
I am always available for questions. And yes I found this site when I was Googling for cool nursing quotes to use in my presentations.
syudent1010@… Apr 27, 2007, 3:42 PM
CLC19K30 or to anyone else that can answer my question,
Thanks for the advice. I met yesterday with a medical recruiter for the ANC. After meeting with him, what I was planning on doing is to do my next semster's preceptorship at one of the two army hopsitals that is close to me. I am planning on starting the paperwork process while I am doing the preceptorship, after I get a better idea of what all is involved with the ANC. He explained to me like you were saying that I really can't start any training until I pass the NCLEX and take the state boards where I live at. I guess one of my questions at this time is how long does the process take after I submit my paperwork to the army. He explained to me like you were saying that the appointment goes before a board, and it also goes before congress (WOW!).Most nurses I know took about a month or so to prepare for the NCLEX. If it takes longer for me to finish school and take my NCLEX than it goes to get the appointment what happens? Would you have any other suggestions for what I should do? Thank You so much!:)

Hello Shannon,

Just curious, it is great that you want to be a military nurse, go into the armed forces.

1. Are you worried at about being sent to Iraq or some other god awful place and getting killed over a senseless war initiated by Bush or some other idiot in power?

2. Do you think it might be better to work in a stateside hospital for a year to two years first, get comfortable with nursing, solidify your skills, decide what kind of nursing appeals to you, before you commit years of your life to the military?

3. Do you think your recruiter is going to tell you anything, everything he can to get you to enlist, BUT what you don't want to hear? I'd take everything you hear with a grain of salt.

Just food for thought.

Andrew - have you ever served in the military?

If not, I'll tell you right now, I take great offense at the remarks you've made about our military and the President!!!

I'm a former U.S. Marine who proudly served this beloved country with 2 tours in 'Nam, just so people like you would have the freedom to run your mouth.

The least you can do is keep your personal opinions to yourself; especially about the men and women who have more spine and gonads than you do, by signing up and serving this country -- if you don't like it here, I understand there's plenty of room "down South"!

I'm not a veteran.

The derogatory remarks are made towards Military Recruiters & President Bush and this new Vietnam he's gotten us involved in. Are recruiters are exceptionally honest and forthcoming in your experience?

Our fellow citizens and kids are being sent into harm's way and I disagree with it where Iraq is concerned.

I commend, not criticise them for going, enlisting. They're serving their country and making the ultimate sacrifice every day. They have no say on where they are sent.

Shannon is considering going into the military and is quite enthusiastic. I'd prefer she goes in with her eyes open.

I'd strongly caution any woman (nurses-already perceived sex objects) from considering the armed forces based on existing problems with sexual harassment and rape which has been rampant for decades.

The threat of sexual violence against female soldiers by their male colleagues is so great that women are warned not to go out to the bathroom alone at night. This has led women to stop drinking fluids at 3:00 in the afternoon and has even led to deaths due to dehydration."

I can accept you're angry that I don't agree with Bush and Iraq. You're entirely entitled to your opinion in that respect.

You'd do well not to defame the Marines either. My son served proudly for 9 years. He's been out for 2. The greatest thing he ever said was. "If I have to defend this country I will. But I will defend it for freedom and nothing else. Yes, Mom, your freedom to be a pacifist."

Either you fought for ALL of us or you fought in vain.

I grew up in the 60's and I DO remember it. And I also remember how you vets were treated by YOUR government when you returned.
In light of some recent developments I don't see these young men and women who are defending us again getting much better treatment. DO YOU? Up until recently the unloading of their flag drapped coffins was not allowed on the nightly news. Do you think that is our government honoring it's fallen soldiers and Marines?

And it's a sad commentary when their names have to be read long after many Americans have gone to bed at night.

Don't jump your fellow Americans. If we had been able to vote on this conflict I bet we wouldn't be having this debate today.

We can and should comment on and disagree with our government. That doesn't show disrespct for our soldiers or Marines. Just the opposite. I believe it tells them that we do care. We do care that they live to see another day, get married, and raise their own children in peace. Bush doesn't care. His girls aren't serving now are they? He doesn't understand the common working American with kids over there. Don't tell us who doesn't understand and who does.

Do you really think the people who were responsible for 9/11 are hurting? Do you really think the women and children being killed daily in Iraq, unable to work, or get an education deserve that? What did they do to us? Do you really think an eye for an eye solves anything? All you have left are angry blind people.

If your house is broken into do you run all over the country looking for the culprit or do you stay home and defend your home better. Do you see the divide and conquer strategy the terrorist are using here. We've put troops all over the world. Who's defending this country? They are laughing at us. We've lost several allies here. And soon to lose Britian. For what? I don't feel the least bit more secure than I did on 9/12. Maybe less even.

And what's up with the 'down South" comment. Isn't Texas in the Southern part of this country?

Thanks for fighting for ALL of my freedoms as an American.

I appreciate your honesty and have no plans to turn this into a political arena, but will respond to you -- correct; Recruiters of ALL Armed Services have, shall we say, "devious" methods of getting young people to sign up, and I disagree with those methods.

Sending young people into harm's way in war has been going on since the beginning of time, and will not change anytime in the future -- but, it's their decision to sign the dotted line, knowing they may / may not be sent to a war zone somewhere on the planet to defend the freedoms we all enjoy.

You, nor anyone else, saw any of the Intel provided to the President that prompted his actions - having been assigned to the Pentagon years ago for a period of time, rest assured the President, no matter what his political affiliation, has the duty of not just reading the Intel, but has literally 100's of meetings before making the decision of declaring war.

I'm just curious of how many Americans, should we decide to pull the troops out anytime soon, are ready for Islam Terrorists to re-group and bring the fight to our soil -- how many of you would know what to do first when the first round of bombs begin exploding in America -- is that when citizens will start screaming for our "YOUNG MILITARY" to defend them? You should know the answer to that.

Government agencies are notoriously incompetent and the answer is not to grow them bigger or throw more tax money at them; the answer is to get rid of them completely. Government is not the answer to a single problem.

If we're to look for the truth on anything, it certainly isn't from the print media or the hacks on television.

What angers me is the fact that there is, and has been a cover-up where WMD have indeed been found by someone the Gov't. and Media have chosen to keep silent -- his name is Dave Gaubatz -- ever hear of him?

If not, read this...

I'm assuming you meant this post for me -- rest assured; I will NEVER defame the U.S. Marine Corps nor any other military branch ... I salute your brave son for serving this beloved country!

You're right; returning Vets from ANY war have not always been given the best treatment, but today's Vets coming back from Iraq are given far better "Welcome Home's" than any of us 'Nam Vets experienced -- one protestor spit in my face at the San Francisco Airport; the last I saw of him was when he was loaded into an ambulance after the butt of my rifle connected with his jaw, breaking it in numerous places, and the police just walked away from us.

As for the citizens in Iraq not deserving what they're experiencing -- what do you expect combat troops to do, when those Iraq citizens are killing our troops -- walk up; pat 'em on the head, and ask nicely if they intend to maim / kill them? Wake up and get a clue.

What we need in the Oval Office is someone who's truly served with a combat unit on the ground and understands how to defeat the enemy with the least casualties, in a timely manner; someone with backbone and brains to stand up and get the job done.

The reason we are limited on our own security here at home, is because a certain political party screamed years ago to get rid of the military draft -- now, we're paying the price for that stupid move ... we need to bring it back and make it permanent, along with taking alot of the violent gang members in our prisons and make them serve a mandatory 4 years; if they enjoy killing innocent people so much, put them into a real combat zone -- and tell 'em, "these people want to kill you also; but they have weapons to shoot back at you".

At least, under those conditions, we could bring back all of the National Guard where they belong -- protecting our "National" interests.

For the record -- I'm a Native-born TEXAN from Corpus Christi.

Never ASS U ME. I quoted your post I was replying to your post.

What did breaking that man's jaw do for you? Inflate your ego.

Do you actually think killing people enamours them to you? Did the Iraqi people invite us? Do they want us there? Do you like being the laughing stock of the neighborhood?

My son also knows he's a jarhead. I'm ASS U ming you know you are one too.

It's amazing to me how you speak out of both sides of your mouth.
Our president ( I will not capitalize the word when referring to the particular person holding the position at the present time)held numerous meetings before he "declared" war. Give me a break. Watch tonight and see Tenant. They can't both be telling the truth.

This president wants to be remembered the history books. He's the "decider" remember that. He'd like to take all of our freedoms away. I suppose you believe the Germans were stupid people in the last century. They weren't. They were duped. Yes, they didn't have the technology we have today to get information. But they followed blindly. Hopefully, we have learnt from their mistakes.

This country hasn't won a war since the American Revolution. Yes, you read that correctly. Because the only war worth fighting is for freedom. We aren't fighting for OUR freedom here. We weren't fighting for OUR freedom in Vietnam either.

Marin Luther King Jr. showed us the way. NON VIOLENCE. Do African American enjoy total equality yet. NO but the equality they do have is one they can proudly say... we got it peacefully. That can't be said of most counties. And when they do enjoy total equality it will be with far LESS causalities than any war any country has fought. Also, they will have "fought" their last "war".

So two wrongs make a right. Putting gang members in to the service would solve our problems. Your logic there escapes me.
If I already have a depleted military WTH would I send thousands more of them half way around the world. This administation can reinstate the draft. Why haven't they. Because they know their limits and they also know they've about exceeded them. They aren't stupid, don't get the idea that I believe they are. On the contrary.

Please tell me why you are allowed to speak your mind and we are not?

So you are one of those good ole boys from the south? I didn't think you wanted to associate with us ??? northerners??? Why are saying we can go "down South"??? I'm confused.

If you ever think that any group of people will come around to your way of thinking by killing half of them you are sadly mistaken.

onetraveler - I can see why you're a one-track woman with no logic nor understanding of politics and military; you, as a citizen, VOTE FOR POLITICIANS; get that thru your head, especially since you have the freedom to choose who you want in Office.

Obviously, you've never served either, so you can't speak for us 'Nam Vets who were there -- no; it didn't do anything for my ego to break that guy's jaw ... I'd still do the same if you or anyone else spit on me for my service to this country.

Just curious - since you blame the President for everything, and also because you're stomping your foot like a little baby wanting your way ... do you do the same with your employer; does your employer do everything to your satisfaction?

No need to insult my intelligence, as we both know the answer to that SIMPLE question, don't we? Unless you need for me to draw you a map.

End of rant -- get back to the original thread issue.

It seems to me that you're the one stomping his feet here. I don't have to go to the sun to know it's hot. I remember My Lai. Do you? Are you proud of that too. Did those children running in the street screaming make you proud?

One person on this board offered his opinion on another human beings life decision and YOU didn't like it.And you wanted to beat him into submission. Well here in the civilian world you're gonna take some flak for that. If you don't like why don't you go back "down South" where they all agree with you. The issues he brought up are irrefutable.

BTW I don't pay my employer to take care of me. I do pay this government to act in my best interests. And to spend my money well.

You've decided to attack me. That's the MO of someone who has no defense for his/her views.

Go ahead. BTW I didn't VOTE FOR EITHER OF THE BUSHES EITHER TIME.

Now I'll give my opinion to the OP.... DON"T DO IT.

And no I didn't serve in 'Nam but I saw the men who came back broken, wounded, never the same. Haunted by the memories. And many are still haunted. Unable to pick up the shattered pieces of their lives. Unable to work whether crippled physically or emotionally. Addicted to drug, heroin, and pain killers.

You make choose to sweep it all under the rug. But many of us don't. What's that saying from Jonestown. If we don't learn from our mistakes we are doomed to repeat them?

What did we, Americans, gain from Vietnam? Can you tell me TODAY how are lives are better because of Vietnam.

I just read in my local paper today about an MIA who's remains were finally found just before Christmas over there. His kids were 2 and 4 at time his plane crashed. Can you look them in eye today and tell them it was all worth them being without a father all their lives? I don't believe you can. But if you can then you're crippled from Vietnam. No empathy or sympathy for your fellow man. You're just as dead as that pilot. And for that you do have my sympathy.

If you have a budget and are living pay check to pay check you don't go out and buy an new Caddy. You drive the old clunker for awhile longer. We don't have the resourses either physically or monetarily to go traipes all of the world fighting ridiculous wars. This isn't about freedom it's about OIL.

Saudia Arabia has what...25% of the world's oil supply. And where did the ring leader and most of the terrorists come from Ding Ding we have a winner.... Saudia Arabia. But did we invade them.. Hell no we can't afford that and neither can the rest of the world.

Are there human rights violation in SA . You bet your sweet bippy but we aren't going in there to fix that are we?

Yes; I've lived / worked in both Saudi Arabia and South America -- what's that got to do with the price of tea in China?

You forgot to call me fat too. I don't have a HARD ON for any usless baby killers as you've so aptly put it. As for the "down South" comment. HELLO THAT WAS YOUR INITIAL COMMENT. And you've yet to explain it to us.

Are you denying My Lai ever happened. OMG PTSD is worse than I thought. As for pounding the keys. Hey man, I paid for the lappy in full without the help of anyone else. I'll pound the keys if I want to.

So far, you haven't answered any of my questions. Because as we both know, you don't have the answers.

Saudi Arabia is the home of the terrorists. Why didn't we invade that country. YOU can't answer that can you?

I'll have a wonderful week knowing I've never killed innocent women, children and old men.. Hope you can sleep well this week too.:whatever:

If not, I'll tell you right now, I take great offense at the remarks you've made about our military and the President!!!

I'm a former U.S. Marine who proudly served this beloved country with 2 tours in 'Nam, just so people like you would have the freedom to run your mouth.

The least you can do is keep your personal opinions to yourself; especially about the men and women who have more spine and gonads than you do, by signing up and serving this country -- if you don't like it here, I understand there's plenty of room "down South"!

Again I will ask you to explain what "I understand there's plenty of room "down South" means. If you can explain it.......

And "spine and gonads than you do" isn't an attack.

And it's not :endof:. Unlike some people you don't scare me.
My my -- quite defensive, aren't we? I don't know you, so I can't say you're fat unless you have a complex about it.

You're right; I won't answer you about the "down South" because I'd have to draw you a map, since you obviously don't have the G2 Intel north of your shoulders to figure it out.

The next time you talk with any of the alleged soldiers you allegedly take care of, call them baby-killers to their face -- again; it's something you have a severe lack of knowledge about, having never served.

I'm not confirming, nor denying certain incidents happened almost 40 years ago; but for those who were not there, choose to believe the media -- but, it does confirm the lack of intelligence of one believing what they read and hear.

Yep; I sleep just fine and have for many years -- I have all of the answers to your childish questions; I just have the maturity not to answer you here.

Why would I want to be "down South" with you. I believe it's a racist comment and that's why you won't explain it.

I never once said I take care of Vietnam vets. Another ass umption on your part?

So I can't believe atrocities happen in war. Now that wouldn't be very logical on my part would it. Oh wait you already know I'm not logical.

You've lost this debate and you can't stand that an illogical woman has shown you that.

You might be a woman. You've changed your mind you said :endof:

Onetraveler,

I am not going to allow you to attack any longer.

If you continue this line of discussion, you will be banned.

If you can't debate in a civil manner without insulting people, then you will need to find somewhere else to debate.

Excuse me??? Did you read the whole thread. Travelagent work for you is that it.. Or is it because he's a "guy".. Or you're a Bushie?

You really need to be fair here. But as usual it's a control issue. Don't bother................. You're forum is a farce anyway. NO different than Delphi or All Nurses.

You don't want real debate or information. All you want is to make $$$$$$$$$...

You really have NO IDEA what you are talking about.

I don't even know travelagent, so no, he does not work for me.

As for him being a guy, I'm not biased either way based on gender. As for me being a "Bushie" well it's none of your damn business, but I'll tell you anyway. I voted for him twice. The second time was for lack of a better option. I no longer am a supporter.

It's obvious that you have plenty of bias dictating your responses.

It has nothing to do with control. It's called MAINTAINING CIVIL DISCUSSION.

As far as the making money comment goes, that's none of your damn business either, but this site operates for reasons that aren't based on money and it would generate revenue no matter how many people like you that have to be banned because they can't be civil.

Evidently you can't see that SOME PEOPLE can form opinions objectively, without letting outside influences or bias get in the way. You seem to be unable to do that because the first thing you do is ASS U (I'll leave out the me part because you aren't making an ass of me) that I am biased because he's a guy, I'm a Bushie, and I have some need to "CONTROL" things here.

I'll let you in on a little secret. I've only banned ONE POSTER of over 21,000 for reasons other than SPAM. You may be the second. Control over people's opinions is not something I believe in.

If you want to disagree, that is fine.

Just do it without insulting and attacking people. THAT IS ALL I AM ASKING. If you can't do it, then you'll have to move on. It is that simple.

That's the 2nd time you've tried to make this into a racial thing; knock it off and grow up -- the Admin has spoken, and I agree with him ... I too voted for both Bushes; like I've tried to explain, NO PRESIDENT can please each and every citizen, no matter what he does; go back in your history book and recall what President Lincoln said about that.

There's alot of things the current Administration has done that I disagree with; but it doesn't change the fact that we, the citizens, voted him into Office because he made far better sense than a "flip-flopper" ... at least he's kept his zipper closed and hasn't embarrassed the American public with lewd actions.

student1010,

Welcome to the forum.

I apologize that your intro thread turned into a political debate along with all that ensued.

Hmm, interesting thread you've got going on here. Onetraveler, I have an answer to your question. To give a little background - I marched in the streets for months in a futile attempt to prevent/end the Iraq War, was on the verge of going to Iraq to be a human shield, ended up in jail for peacefully protesting the Republican National Convention, and participated in radical actions that I won't openly discuss. In the end, I realized that it didn't matter to other people what I thought was right or what was the truth. I ultimatley accepted that we all have to look out for number one. Those of us who don't are martyrs, but to expect everyone to be one is to ask them to be more than human. We didn't invade Saudi Arabia or Afghanistan because it wasn't in the best interests of those in power in this country. It's about lining the coffers of those in charge, and I can't blame them, because why should they care about other people when it would just compromise their power and position? No, honestly. Why should they? They're not obligated to make everyone happy; they just need to make sure that they and their loved ones are taken care of. It sucks for the rest of us, but it makes me less mad knowing that I'm getting screwed over when I realize that politics is a more complicated version of natural competition. It's eat or be eaten, unless there's the opportunity for both parties to gain more via mutual cooperation. Well, W doesn't really need the people anymore, so it serves his interests better to do what he feels he should to get ahead - including lie, cheat, misunderstand, dodge the question, make up new words, pose in a staged Thanksgiving photo shoot serving a fake turkey to the troops, talk about how the "enemy never stops thinking of ways to hurt us and neither do we"...

WOW!!!!!!!!! I don't know what to say about the responses to my posting. So let me respond this way. I want to be a nurse to help people. I am not stupid and I will not let someone talk me into something without doing my research. I am an adult that has been living on my own for a while now, so I know how to take care of myself THANK YOU VERY MUCH! I want to be a military nurse because I want to help the soldiers. I am not saying what my political beliefs are because it is no one’s business but mine, however I will say that the reason I want to be a military nurse is for the soldiers' and to serve my country. In my opinion if you don't like what is going on where you live, then move! I know some soldiers that don't agree with us being in Iraq, but they are over there doing their job and putting their life on the line everyday, so that hopefully there will never be another 11 September 2001, and so that they can hopefully prevent thousands of innocent Americans from being killed again. If you talk to many soldiers, they will tell you that the main reason why they keep doing what they do is to help one another. One of the Army values (and I am pretty sure the other branches have the same one) is to never leave a fallen comrade. I know that I might be sent to Iraq and put in danger, but at the same time if you have driven in any big city, you can be endanger from any idiot driver that's on the road (or anywhere for that matter). I much rather die knowing I am trying to help a soldier, or anyone for that matter, get back to their family than to die because some idiot doesn't know how to drive or some other stupid way people lose their lives. Nursing is a profession where you have to have passion for what you are doing and if you don't, then get out of it. I have always appreciated our military and what they stand for. I hope people calm down some and realize that no matter what your political beliefs are that you still need to support our men and women that are coming back from Iraq and Afghanistan. I would hate to see the soldiers' treated the way they were back in the sixties. Anyways, I thought it only fair that I had my say since my posting is the one that started all of the problems.:houra:

Wow syudent1010@aol.com -- I highly commend you for your wonderful response and dedication; the men and women serving our wonderful country will certainly appreciate that more than you can imagine ... especially where you are intelligent enough not to allow politics to cloud your judgement involving the medical care you've decided to dedicate yourself to, by way of taking care of those who care about you by placing their lives in harm's way to protect your rights and freedoms so that you can continue your chosen profession of helping others in need!

I've never been a Medic / Nurse, but have always been very appreciative to the dedication and skills of those like you, not only in Viet-Nam, but also as a Sheriff's Officer years ago in Dallas / Ft. Worth.

It seems you have a level head, and along with your dedication and training, NEVER let the idiot politics get in your way of doing what you've been trained to do -- saving lives -- too many have lost sight of that simple concept!

Personally, with your attitude and intelligent comprehension about helping those on the battlefield doing exactly what you're doing -- believing in doing the right thing -- I would be the first in line to not only salute you, but hug and thank you for a job well done!

Semper Fi ... just an old 'Nam Vet who appreciated being taken care of by a caring Nursing staff many years ago, who didn't let their political affiliations get in the way of patient care...

nice posting syudent1010@aol.com. Obviously someone struck a nerve on this thread you started. I exercise my vote and then i support whomever is elected. I don't sit down and cross my arms and pout until my politician gets elected. I have enjoyed being a Navy Nurse and have never regretted it although I have had to do things and go places that I didn't particularly enjoy. Good luck in your chosen field.

I need a new recruiter! Are you still available or can you recommend someone?
