Depends on their criteria (usually listed in their program descriptions if you request them) and waiting lists. Most nursing programs are filling up very quickly these days. Waiting six months, a year or two for a slot is commonplace.
I'd keep on doing exactly what you are doing. Apply to as many schools as is feasible and get your applications in early. Sooner or later a slot will open up for you.
It might not hurt to get some experience early in the game by working as Certified Nursing Assistant or Unit Secretary.
