    Re: emergency nursing

You can find detailed information on these websites:

Arterial blood gases, ABGs, Discovery Health:"Arterial blood gases, called ABGs, are a series of blood measurements that are ordered as a single test. This test is used mainly to check lung function and acid levels in the body."
    http://health.discovery.com/encyclop...030&page=1

Arterial Blood Gases, ABGs, labtestsonline.org:"Blood gas measurements are used mainly to evaluate the severity of an O2/CO2 or pH imbalance. Your body will try to restore any imbalance by itself, but if you have an overwhelming acute problem or a long-term drain on your body, you may need medical intervention (such as being given concentrated, pure O2 or, in extreme cases, being put on a respirator to gain additional oxygen). If you are on continuing oxygen therapy, your doctor may order blood gas tests to monitor the effectiveness of that therapy."

Arterial Blood Gases, Medicalapproaches.com:"ABGs are central to the management of any patient with breathing difficulty. To maximise their accuracy and usefulness: Make sure the inspired % O2 is known. Ideally perform after several minutes of breathing air, otherwise use a venturi mask to administer O2 by % rather than simple masks with a flow rate in litres / min."

Blood gases, Medline Plus:"The test is performed by collecting a sample of blood from an artery. Using a small needle, the sample may be collected from the radial artery in the wrist, the femoral artery in the groin, or the brachial artery in the arm. Before blood is drawn, the circulation to the hand may be tested (if the wrist is the site). After the blood is drawn, pressure must be applied to the puncture site for at least 5 minutes to completely stop the bleeding. The test must be sent to the laboratory for analysis immediately, or the accuracy of the results cannot be guaranteed."

An Approach to the Analysis of Arterial Blood Gases and Acid-Base Disorders, VirtualHospital.org, The University of Iowa:"This document is designed to provide a practical approach to arterial blood gas analysis and will provide basic principles for understanding acid-base disturbances commonly encountered in medical practice. Although physiologic equations will appear throughout, the derivation and physiologic basis will not be discussed. Prior background in the physiology of respiratory system and acid-base disturbances is strongly recommended, but not required to complete this section."

ABG tutorial! Maagnursing.com:"Sometimes reading and deciphering Arterial Blood Gases (ABGs) can be a challenge! I have provided an interactive online tutorial for your review. Arterial blood gas values reflect ventilation and acid-base balance. The results include the arterial blood pH (concentration of hydrogen ions in the blood) , partial pressure of carbon dioxide (PaCO2) dissolved in the arterial plasma, and the concentration of sodium bicarbonate (HCO3-) in the blood. Our bodies regulate an acid-base balance through a "buffer system." This buffer system neutralizes acids. There are three buffer systems that exist for the maintenance of our acid-base equilibrium: a buffer system in our blood, respiratory system, and renal system."

Introduction, Mad Scientist Software's Blood Gases tutorial software:"Two p.m., Bayside Community Hospital, the emergency room. A 29-year old female is complaining of chest pain and shortness of breath. The intern tells you her PaO2 is normal. Anxiety and hyperventilation, he says. Entering the room, you see a hyperventilating young lady with a cast on her right leg and a pack of cigarettes sticking out of her purse. On the chart, you see "Meds: BCP." A quick calculation of the Aa gradient tells you that this patient's "normal" oxygen is not normal at all — it's depressed for her level of hyperventilation. Suspecting pulmonary embolism, you order a lung scan."
