How does everyone relax when they get home after a traumatic day at work?

depends on what time it is. I may have a few drinks. I may watch sports. I may go up stairs and get on the computer. I may just go to bed. I spend most of my time on the computer anyway, but it helps to take your mind off of other things. I don't smoke, but sometimes I just want to smoke a cigarette. Sometimes I'll gorge myself when I get depressed. Heck, after typing all of that, I do one of those every night, what does that tell you!

That is an excellent question! If I have had a really hard day and I can get out in the yard that is what I do. While I am in the yard I try to tell myself that life is way too short to bring that mess home. I allow myself about 10-15minutes of post mortum regurgitation and then I focus on home issues. A nice bubble bath is good. I have also just started to have routine pedicures and manicures. We don't take care of ourselves enough. That gives me something to look forward to.

Thanks for the reply. Hot bath is a good one it also helps stop muscle cramps if needed. Reading helps me lots most days..

Hi Judy
have enjoyed reading your threads..its my first time at this site and I like how polite we nurses are to one another here..its nice...
it answer to your question it depends on how bad my day was..but usually CRANK UP THOSE TUNES IN THE CAR RIDE HOME put on some shades and sorta dance and sing out loud in the car...by the time I get home am in a better mood....then a cook a good meal for myself...
have also gotten into manicures/pedicures and once month massages hey if a nurse is not worth those 3 things then who is.....
nurse care is just as import to the equation that includes patient care..with out first the latter does suffer.....
thank you and keep it comming...

I worked in peds onco and can say I've needed to unwind more than a few times...
The thing I found that helped me the most (although I do indulge in all the pampering above!) was to find somebody that really understood my job. A fellow nurse (not necessarily at work), an old teacher, maybe even online here. I need that release of talking about it to get it all out of my system, and to somebody who can understand on some level - my girlfriend next door doesn't quite cut it.

Feel free to vent to us, Judyd!

I have 2 fox terrier dogs who are SOOOO happy and excited to see me get home that any frustrations/grumps about the day soon disappear after a romp around with those guys.

Complan to husband. Then take a shower, put lotion on and get in jammies. Then usually watch some cheesy reality TV to get my mind off things.

I must be very fortunate to have the job I do. I work in the Neonatal ICU and very rarely feel like I take my work home. It must be because our staffing is very nice (usually 2 pts, sometimes a 1:1 or at the most 3 babies). Not only that, but the babies don't talk back, yeah they cry but usually giving them a binkie or holding them will cure that! Also and most importantly, the families are soo very appreciative of what I/we do in the NICU that I rarely feel burnt out. However, after stressful days such as when a baby dies I usually take a hot bubble bath, have a glass of wine and play some comforting/relaxing music such as classical, that will usually take my woes away!

I get on the internet!

Either that or crack open a beer.

I'm with shortbus, I usually get home have a quick shower to get all the nasties off and then settle with a beer and cruise the net, I am a hockey card collector so I usually look for related topics. Then I jump off and have some family time. I have not gone through the routine of being a full time nurse but being a nursing student it is sometimes just as stressful.

Fortunately my significant other is also a nurse so I can vent...then I'm OK and can let it go. Cuddle time with strong arms wrapped around me takes care of all!

I get on the internet, & visit some of my favorite Imaging Newsgroups. I love taking one or two (sometimes more) images & combining them to see what I can come up with. It takes my mind off of everything & really relaxes me.

I like to surf the net too, and soak my tired, aching feet...Do any of you have a favorite nursing shoe you wear to keep your feet comfortable?

I found that I loved clogs but they gave me huge callouses on my big toe so I had to give them up.. I went to Rocker's by Reebok.. Unfortunately, they don't make them anymore so I would be interested in what you find out here..

The pair I have now are pretty ratty..

Do you wear support hose I find they actually help my feet feel better...I don't know how that works just that it does.

I'm thinking about getting a dog but working 12-14/hrs a day isn't fair to the dog.. Oh dear smooth Jazz.. Nope I have to crank that radio up on either oldies or C&W and sing as loud as I can going home.. Sorta like yelling and letting it allllll hang out...Can't yell at anyone at work so I yell at them on the way home..My wide open mouth just lets all the stress out...Ya know like the punching bag in the basement.

Primal scream is very good. Can scare the neighbors. But I like to play with my little puppy or I rub my toes on his short fur. He is an understanding dog.

Playing with my four legged babies (Pembroke Welsh Corgi and a very spoiled cat) always puts me in a relaxed and happy mood. My significant other is also a nurse and also works noc shift so on days we get home together it is so nice to be able sit and talk.

I live 45 minutes from work, so by the time I get home, I'm USUALLY fit to talk to. On the way home I either listen to smooth jazz or Michael Savage - he gets me juked up a whole other way!!!

WindingRoad - I really like Ryka shoes, made for women, by women. Great fit, VERY comfortable. I WON'T wear cheezy cheap shoes. My feet are too important to me. They get rubbed with peppermint lotion everynight and they love it!!! I take care of them, and they take care of me!!!

Hi, I am really WindingRoad.. but I think Aaron upgraded one time to many..LOLLL

I liked Reebok rockers but of course they stopped making them. I am using K-Swiss Si-18 techs. As a dialysis nurse I do alot of standing..Really hard on the back, feet, and legs.. I had DVT in 1994 and now have CVI..

Looking to find a surgeon who does bovine valve replacements...

When I first started nursing my feet always burned ( I was only 29 and fairly normal weight) and another nurse told me to wear support hose..I said," Support hose for burning feet but it worked"" I don't know why ..Who cares as long as my feet and legs don't hurt.

Now wearing 30-40 compression stockings to ward off VSU..

I'll go for the long hot shower and then curling up with a good book. Stephen King, Dean Koontz, etc.

Remember when I was a new graduate, obsessing over work long after my shift was over and then on my days off. It simply isn't worth it. Do the best you can, and go home with a clear conscience. Start each shift fresh, and then leave work at work.

I had a bad MVA that totaled the rear of my car few weeks ago. Trying to get my doc. to get me massages 3 times a week for my back and beck. On the other persons insurance of course. Skalaxin don't do, dodo.

OK since this is the Let it go section:
My MVA, I was stopped for another MVA along with over 100 other people who stopped. This 19 yo plowed into the rear of me at 60 mph. Hit me so hard she knocked my uniform badge off, it was found on the dash. I was OK, she was OK. The kicker was, when the officer gave her a ticket, she said, "What is that for, Its not my fult I could not stop." Hundreds of other cars stopped but she could not. What, she had her head up her ass where she could not see. Ahhhhhhh I feel better now.

I was once entering a parking garage in the Houston Medical Center, when the car in front of me suddenly stopped, and began backing up so quickly that I didn't have time to dodge, or honk the horn. Her excuse? Well, it was her hus ban's falt, because her rearview mirrow had fallen off and he hadn't put it back on...... yes, she was a blonde.
