child\'s finger sprained or broken?

How do I tell if my child's finger is sprained or broken? In gym he jammed his finger (pinky) and it is purplish in color and slightly swollen. He can bend it but it hurts. If sprained does he need to see a Dr? Does it need to be splinted? or what??
