Hi everyone. I am Amanda from FL. I am looking to start traveling in Aug and would love to go to San Diego. RN Network said it is kind of hard to get spots there in the er. This will be my first travel assignment and would like to know if anyone has been there and any info would be helpful.:)
traveling to california
Hello- I am currently on assignment with RN Network in the ER at Kaiser in San Diego. It is a little more difficult to find assignments in the ER here in San Diego, as compared with the Los Angeles area or Northern CA, there just aren't as many travel ER assignments in San Diego, BUT there are occasionally assignments- it took me a while, but I was finally able to get one out here... Let me know if you have any specific questions about San Diego or Kaiser!
thanks amanda. I have read alot of your posts and you seem to have a wealth of information. have youe enjoyed san diego, would you go back? I have a friend who wants to travel with me and she wants to go to nyc and I don't really think I would like it. So I would like to know some of the placed you have been and would recommend going since I am VERY new to this.
thanks,
amanda
thanks,
amanda
San Diego is absolutely beautiful, with lots of things to do! I would definitely come back here. I have never worked in NYC, but would never take an ER assignment there. Their nurse to patient ratios are insane (1:8 or more). I value my license too much to put it at risk like that! If you're looking to be near NYC, you might consider looking at assignments nearby, like in Connecticut. I have heard that the working conditions are much better, and it's just a short train ride to the city.

Hey Trauma Queen. So, are there particular places you would reccomend for an ER assignment in No. Cali?
I am about to take my first assignment and can not decide where to go/what hospital to choose. I would like to be in east bay but there are no positons there right now. I am flexible and can wait. I know everyone loves the one hospital out there Alta? (sp?) but I think it is a huge trauma center and I have been working in a very busy medical ER with little trauma exp. Getting my TNCC this month though.
Sacremento Kaiser is paying well but a little far from east bay. Have heard horror stories of Santa Clara. What about the VA in Palo Alta? Anyone know about the hosptials in Oakland?
I am a big city girl (rarely lived anywhere with a population less than 3 milion!). So I don't think Oakland will scare me but who knows.
Sorry, I have never worked in Northern California, so I am not familiar with any of those hospitals....
Hey, ladybird. I'm currently living in San Jose, and I'm working in Mountain View.
I know a couple of nurses that work at the Palo Alto VA, and they seem to like it a lot. I too have heard of horror stories at Kaiser Santa Clara. Regional Medical Center in San Jose tends to be a bit of a dive, but the nurses that work in the ER there seem to like it well enough, they just tend to get burnt out after a while.
Most anywhere on the Peninsula is going to be good (between San Fransisco and San Jose). It's a fairly upscale area and you'll be caring for a lot of software engineers and high tech professionals. The East Bay tends to be more working class/hispanic/Indian communities. Oakland is generally referred to as the ghetto. Most locals that I work with try to stay away from Oakland.
Sacramento is really, really hot during the summer, and I don't know much about the hospitals in the area. Stay away from Fresno. About the only two hospitals that I'd work at in the area are the Heart Hospital or maybe St. Anne's.
If you have any other questions, feel free to drop me a line.

Hello everyone! I hope those of you doing assignments in CA are enjoying it! I would love to get back out to CA. I have done 2 assignments out there. I would love to be able to have a travel buddy go with me. I am here in Louisiana and my husband used to travel with me, but he decided to stay here for awhile and not travel. So I have an active license and a new car so all I need is a travel buddy. I am not one to travel by myself so if anyone might be interested, let me know! Until enjoy the sunshine and beaches for me!
