Charleston, W.V. (AP) -- About 8,000 registered nurses in West Virginia have until the end of the month to renew their licenses to avoid fines and their ability to work.

The upcoming deadline is due to a change in when licenses must be renewed.

In the past, the Board of Professional Examiners for Professional Registered Nurses gave nurses until the end of the year to renew their licenses.
This year, the Board moved the deadline to Oct. 31.

The Board's Executive Director Laura Rhodes says the change was made to ensure hospitals and other health care facilities have qualified staff on hand during the end-of-the-year holiday season.

State Lawmakers approved the deadline change last year.
