This out of Australia: Fewer nurses in nursing homes - Yahoo!7 News

Nursing homes may need a new name - there aren't so many nurses working in them any more.

A snapshot of the country's aged-care homes found thousands of nurses have left the sector in recent years, to be replaced by non-nursing staff.

There are more residents, but the number of registered nurses looking after them has plunged almost 20 per cent since 2003.

The snapshot pointed to problems within Australia's 175,000-strong aged-care workforce.

Most workers say they do not get to spend enough time with residents. And workers are "strikingly disappointed" with their pay.

Ageing Minister Justine Elliot vowed to boost the nursing presence in aged-care homes, including through cash bonuses.

"We are determined to increase the numbers of nurses working in the aged-care sector to ensure care for our ageing population," Mrs Elliot said.
