    Re: RN "Super Union"

Oh but there is a lot of disention up in MA over this "super union" and its not official until the dues count is in on Nov 10th

Only 515 of nearly 23,000 MNA members could actually be present at this affiliation vote, less than 2% of the entire voting body. No absentee or remote site voting was allowed and only limited absentee balloting on the dues increase issue.

Only 390 members voted to affiliate with the national union and their agenda was made very clear at the meeting. Those with opposing views were mostly relegated to a separate room 300 yards away viewable only on a television screen, whose microphones were periodically shut off, or called ‘Out of Order’ when the topic of discussion strayed from the accepted program. Those who voted against the national made up nearly 1/3 of the total present voting members. Unfortunately, even with the MNAs vast resources, the Association was only able to muster 515 voters. Not exactly a massive turnout.

An NLRB case has been filed and members are upset, so don't count you eggs yet

Only 390 decided to affiliate? And opposing views get relegated elsewhere? I would question that whole thing. WHY are opposing views not heard, and WHY so few joining up? What is not being mentioned?

Exactly, this thing is being pushed through so fast without unanswered questions one questions the true agenda. Check out the company who is counting the ballots for the dues increases, does this even look legit?

and then the business address is someone's house:

    Re: RN "Super Union"

Those are the questions that hundreds of nurses have, there an agenda and come high or hell water they are going to push it through. even the dues count vote was conducted by a small business out of someone house that lived down the cape 5 miles away from MNA head quaters and the ex president (new elected on last month) is a RN in cape code hospital, there seems to be a lot of coincidences. these are some paragraphs form an article whcih showed up on a labor board.

There has been minimal effort to engage the membership on the affiliation decision; nothing has been made easy, instead of back and forth discussions on the pros and cons of affiliation we were fed a marketing campaign. “Come make history” was the mantra, as if it was a done deal and all that was standing in the way was the formality of a vote. We never saw any significant effort to truly engage the membership like we saw during the in 2001 disaffiliation.

I read the Massachusetts Nurse, but lately its content has been glaringly slanted. Apparently there is no room for dissent in the BODs communications with the membership. During this most recent affiliation drive only one contrary view was offered. When asked at ‘town hall’ meetings about what the potential downsides to an affiliation might be, the questioner was told there weren’t any, dissenting opinions were shouted down and members were told to get their heads out of the clouds and get on board.

“Democracy is unquestioned as a vital attribute of unions, independent of its impact on union effectiveness. Both the staunchest supporters and harshest critics of unions will agree that unions, as organizations representing members, must act democratically (e.g., by electing officers freely and regularly, allowing members to run for office, having members vote on changes in their union’s constitutions, and so on.). Democracy must prevail even if it reduces union effectiveness by, for example, creating political factions within unions at a time when solidarity is crucial, or delaying action when speed might be important (e.g., by encouraging members to debate increases in union dues or the ratification of collective agreements) (Strauss 1991)”

You have to remember, engagement is a conversation and a conversation is a back and forth interaction. Anything other than that, it’s called dictation.

    Or dictatorship? Thanks, LoveLight!

A friend who is NOT a nurse is having problems with the union, who is trying to increase dues; she won't have anything left of her so-called check to take home.

Red face Re: RN "Super Union"

OF course the first thing that will happen if health care reform and government run health care happens will be busting up the unions. There will be a general breakdown in everything nurses have fought to achieve in terms of staffing ratios, salaries and hours. All in order to treat more people for less money. It's happened in other countries and it will happen here.

    Peace and Namaste
