A recent letter from a male nurse describing his experience of being forced to wear female underwear was most interesting. The girls who did this to him and his roommate were absolutely right. For some time now I have been concerned over the appearance of my male nurses. Most uniform trousers are not opaque enough to camouflage the fly fronts of men's jockey briefs. Bikini briefs look just as ridiculous because the low waistbands are frequently visible below the jacket half of the uniform. In addition, so many male nurses seem to insist on wearing ugly cotton t-shirts under their uniform tops. This strikes me as not unlike a woman who allows her slip to show. Equally-awful, as far as I'm concerned, are those ugly, bulky athletic socks that men have taken to wearing. They are never laundered completely white.
The whole subject came to a head several months ago when I went to hospital unexpectedly while visiting my parents. One of the nurses caring for me was an extremely competent, tall, good-looking male of about twenty five. In addition to his remarkable personal attributes, Danny's appearance in his spotless uniform was nothing less than stunning. I tried to work out just what it was about him that distinguished him from his counterparts. First of all, there was no ugly t-shirt visible at his neckline, only smooth hairless skin with a beautiful plain gold chain around his neck. Most interesting was the fact that his polyester uniform pants had no fly down the front, only a single seam. Most surprising of all was the fact that there was no visual evidence showing through his trousers of any fly front on his briefs. This left me extremely curious.
However, my curiosity was short-lived. A day or two later Danny had to stoop over to clean up the mess I had accidentally made by knocking over my water glass. As he bent over, his uniform top rode up high enough to reveal about two inches of satiny white nylon panties. The thought that this gorgeous male nurse might be wearing women's silk panties had never crossed my mind! Composing myself quickly I remarked softly, 'I like your taste in underwear'. When there was no reply I decided to venture a question. 'Do
you wear panties all the time?' I asked, 'Or just when you're in uniform?' As he slowly got back on his feet, Danny, his face beet red , said, 'I have to wear them all the time. They're the only underwear I'm allowed to have. My wife, who's also a nurse, says that panties are what real nurses wear'.
When I asked him what kind of socks he wore, Danny lifted his right leg to reveal a nice pair of white knee-high stockings which were sheer enough to give ample evidence that his legs were kept cleanly shaved. 'Sometimes', Danny added, 'especially in cold weather, my wife makes me wear white tights in addition to my panties'.
At that point you could have knocked me over with a feather. Then it slowly dawned on me that here was the answer to the problem of the male nurse dress code that had been bothering me. The appearance of the uniform is being ruined because the wrong things are being worn with it, and under it. In addition to the obvious fact that women's panties and stockings greatly enhance the appearance of any male nurse's uniform, these garments provide a great psychological advantage as well. Nursing has traditionally been a female domain and, to my way of thinking, one in which we must keep the upper hand. If men wish to invade our territory, they must do so only on our terms. It occurs to me that having to wear women's underwear is a good reminder to the boys that this profession rightly belongs to women. Surely no male who experiences the constant rubbing of silky panties and stockings against his hairless body will be able to forget who's boss.
The one thing I have not yet solved is the problem of the hideous cotton t-shirt. I would be interested to know how your readers will react to my ideas, especially those in the nursing profession, both male and female. Let me make myself perfectly clear. I am boldly suggesting that we who are in positions of authority within the nursing profession take the necessary steps to design and enforce a new dress code for the males in our departments - something inoffensive, yet slightly girlish. Speak up, nurses, and let us hear your feelings!
Ms. R.L., Hampstead
When this letter was originally published, nurses were still educated by the old apprenticeship system, and still wore proper nurses' uniform. Today, when the education of nurses has been captured by the politically correct totalitarian left, the drop out rate for nurses has never been higher. Caring for patients, helping them to relax, and giving them the reassurance that you are patiently there when needed, has a genuinely curative effect, no doubt via some pathway involving the brain and the immune system of the body. Studies have been done which have shown that nurses wearing traditional uniform (dress, starched pinafore, nurses' cap etc.) promote faster and better recovery than comparable patients overseen by the modern blue slacks-and-shirt nurses , whom elderly patients too often do not even recognise as nurses, much to the detriment of their health.
We need to restore nursing education to the system of forty years ago, restore hospital management to the Matron, and, if we are to have male nurses (and somehow they do not have the nurturing, healing effect of properly presented female nurses ) then by all means make their uniform somewhat feminine . But the really important thing today is to restore the female nurse's uniform's efficient but caring femininity; that is a matter of urgency.
Susan
I wear a white t shirt under mine because I have hair that will grab you around the neck and hold on tightly. I personally think it looks like total crap not to cover it up.
Patients don't want you leaning over them caring for them with your chest hair all in their face.
I will wear mans socks, as I alwasys do. I will also wear white boxer briefs as well.
Anyone, man or woman, who tries to get me to wear womens panties or stockings had better think more than twice about it.
Tracy, you only gave a "say what" reply to this so I don't know your thoughts, but I'll tell you I think it is beyond ridiculous.
And if a stereotype of men in nursing being homosexual existed before, just put them in stockings and panties and see what happens.
OK, this deserves a reply. I have been a male nurse for better than 10 years. I wear a V-Neck T-shirt that can hardly be seen. And so what if it can? I wear boxer briefs in the winter and briefs in the summer. (Lets see the girls figure that one out Mike Jordon!!) I purchase my slacks at Dillards or other fine mens apparel stores because I like the professional look of slacks verses scrubs. Yes you can see that they have a fly, but that is a necessity that men require. I don't believe you have to be a female to be a caring individual. I have many letters and thank you notes from many an "old lady" or "old man" that are very grateful for the excellent professional care they received while I was their nurse. I do happen to agree that the uniforms of today have lost the professional appearance that nurses used to convey. But then again must of the sloppy dressers have attitudes that match their appearance. I am proud to be a professional, and a nurse, and my dress appearance reflects that. And I don't have to wear silk panties or shave my legs to be one. My wife like these briefs and all this hair!!!
Who ever wrote the affore mentioned letter is the prime reason that nurses are having such a hard time shaking the "Hand maiden" reputation and can't get the recognition of the true professionals that we are. And to that person I say.... Do us all a favor, RETIRE!!
I really wanted to put this graemlin at the end but I thought it was un professional. ROFLMAO Good one Shortbus!!
Since when does having or not having a fly-front have any impact on quality of care? I can't believe there are places that 'force male nurses to wear women's silk panties' There's plenty of male underwear that doesn't show seams, and you don't have to shop in the ladies section of the store to find'em
I think you need to go bang your head on the wall and re-think this one, Tracy. I like living in a world where men are men and women are women...Vive la differance!
Hey Judy...Trust me, this article outraged me. Like Aaron said, I only reprinted it to show what kind of ignorance there is out there. If you look hard enough, you'll find some real crazy people out there!
Maybe Susan is being unrealistic with her letter and opinion that all male nurses should be "feminized". Some male nurses, however, are quite feminine in appearance and dress accordingly, including one particularly sweet boy who works the night shift at the hospital where I work. He's just out of nursing school and there's no denying his openly displayed femininity. I'm talking girlish hairstyle, plucked eyebrows, pierced ears, shaved legs, and of course, ladies uniform tops and bottoms and the most adorable visible panty and pantyhose lines on the floor. He is totally heterosexual and is currently dating a friend of mine who adores his feminine expression and thinks he's just the kindest and most gentle and most thoughtful boy she's ever met. Certainly, this sort of feminine expression is not for most male nurses, but if the shoe
(or dress) fits - I'd say - he should wear it.
There certainly are some different opinions about men in nursing...but you know what they say about opinions. As for the young fellow you mentioned...
"I'm talking girlish hairstyle, plucked eyebrows, pierced ears, shaved legs, and of course, ladies uniform tops and bottoms and the most adorable visible panty and pantyhose lines on the floor. ...Hey, whatever floats his boat! But let me ask you one or two questions: How does his extreme and open display of femininity affect the "opinions" , and even moreso, acceptance by his peers and his patients? Does this behavior border on the lines of cross-dressing? And is cross-dressing in the workplace acceptable? Professional?
I've got an idea...see if you can get this young fellow to join us here at the forum, and let's get some open lines of communication going, OK?
I don't think that will happen. I DO think, that this poster is either A) the person who wrote the article; B) just trying to get a rise out of the forum.
I just can't believe the scenario. If it's true, then the nurse has some very serious pyschological issues that he should address in my opinion.
Wear panties? I'd sooner sit on a bear trap! This article is way off the mark. I wear scrubs, a beard and all the chest hair I have to show off. Why? I am a man, and these things are natural. Why would a patient think that I am less nurturing. My father (also a big, hairy nurse) is a very compassionate, tender, appropriate male role model. If it is expected of both sexes to be caring and nurturing with their offspring (which is the current social norm), then why wouldn't a man be suited for nursing? My elderly patients appreciate my honesty and support, and my pediatric patients often cling to me in lieu of a male caregiver/role model. What I am saying is this: I will not make apologies for being me. I am not a woman. I am not gay. I am not even effeminate. I am a man who enjoys his job, who provides valuable qualities and insight to his profession, and who is separate from, but equal to his female counterparts in the level of care he provides.
I thought this article required a response for one simple reason...it is absurd!!! I am a male nurse, quite hairy and also quite homosexual. I have never and will never wear a woman's clothing or underwear. I would expand that to say ESPECIALLY ON THE JOB. I am a very professional, caring and efficient nurse, I do not feel that my masculinity or feminity plays a role in good patient care. I also dare any employer in the US to attempt to dictate what sort of underwear I should wear. My hospital recently dropped strict dress codes in critical care areas and we are now allowed to wear any color scrub type uniform, or any surgical scrub uniform. We are also allowed any traditional nursing uniform. I can tell you that there are women who work with me that wear the traditional white uniform and the care their patients receive is no where near the quality that I offer. The moral of the story: the uniform does not make the nurse.
Thanks for the laugh! I never really thought about the male nurses uniforms, much less, what they were wearing under them! Now, I just can't wait. The next male nurse I see I plan on checking him uniform out and guessing what type of undies he has on!
This is indeed just too ridiculous. I supose the author would like to see starched uniforms and caps again, in spite of the fact that those caps were horendous infection vectors. Well hey, let's all stop hand washing, we all know how useless that is, and while we are at it screw taking vital signs too.
What is the world coming to when someone like this can get published?
Is the context of that article really surprising when you consider that it is linked from a website that glorifies censored?
That type of fetishness doesn't concern me. The viewpoint of the woman, Susan, who amended the letter at the bottom, is that all men should be tightly supervised, punished on a regular basis, and forced to wear women's clothing as a demeaning and embarassing method of control.
Once you follow the link and read the site you may realize that it really has very little to do with nursing.
Thats the D*^#@%^ thing ive ever heard of and i think the person who wrote is just trying to get a rise out of everyone. Im a male nurse not a chick and maybe your fantasies have just run away with you. Oh by the way who started infiltrating whoes jobs first. I believe women were burning bras over the fact that they wanted to hang out with the men, spit tobacco and work right along side us and (equality) was the goal. So tell me what is wrong with a man doing the opposite. It's not a womans job, it's not a mans job, it's a job and a man can do it just as well as a woman can and sometimes even better, and u know what? He doesn't have to wear panties to do it, as a matter of fact he doesn't have to wear any undies at all. Woman you've lost your Fr*&%$#in mind. Just how old are? Have you considered retirement. Oh by the way we dont want to go back in time to the old days most of us like to go forward with life. Ok u done it u got a rise out of me.
If you follow the link to the main website at http://www.petticoated.com/, you will find that it is a site dedicated for some people (mainly women I'm sure) to post about their fetish of dressing men up in women's clothing for the purpose of degradation and control. This is called "petticoating" or "petticoat discipline." Since nursing has been a female oriented profession for the last hundred years, it shouldn't come as a surprise that it makes such an easy target for this fetish.
Much like any fetish I think it's more peculiar and laughable than offensive. The only problem that I have is the preoccupation with degrading men. This is an issue that is offensive to me, much like any other unhealthy ideal that instills a sense of superiority over another person, class, or race, and would indicate a sense of unfullfillment and insecurity in the practitioners.
Can I get something to eat here? That is about the only response warranted to this ridiculous article. Kinda like me saying I want all female nurses in football uniforms so as to reflect their strength and athleticism to get up and down the hall in a timely manner.
Paul K. McConnell, RN, ER/CCU/ICU
very married and insanely heterosexual thank you.
Dear God, this would set nursing back to the dark ages!!!!! Nurses have fought long and hard to be recognized as inteligent, particiapating members of the health care field. Why would we want to go back to the days of the matrons? We were providing skills not much different to todays aide (who are a vital part of the health care system). I agree that no nurse should show her underwear regardless of sex. But to focus on men - that is out and out discrimination. We are nurses, not idiots. Men have just as much right to be a nurse, as a woman. Get off your high horse and quit being a horses ass!! Some of the finest nurses I know have been men and women. We have fought for women's rights and should expand that to human rights, regardless of sex, color or national origin.
ummmm, what are we doing staring at this guy's fly-front trousers? (scratches chin...) As long as we look professional and provide quality care, thats all that matters. (shrugs)
I am not sure that I understand the problem. What I wear under my uniform is not any of your business. What if i wore a bra, would that make a difference? The thing to remember here is that we are there to provide QUALITY care. I don`t think that a patient who is having an MI or evolving CVA is going to ask what kind of underwear I have on, they are going to want treatment.

I wonder how a female plumber would feel about wearing mens underwear? Seriously now. . .compassion is not a feminine trait any more than assertiveness is a male trait! What makes the nurse is the mix of skill, judgement and caring. None of these are exclusive to one gender or the other. And as for the uniforms . . .have you ever picked up a uniform catalog and found anything that a male would wear? Except for unisex scrubs, there aren't any "male uniforms". So what do you expect us to wear? Maybe when the people who design uniforms realize that there are a lot of men getting into nursing, and maybe they ought to begin designing uniform clothing that men will wear. . .maybe then you'll see the T-shirts dissapear! Until then, you'll just have to live with us, because we are here to STAY!
As for the uniform catalogs, you are absolutely right... only one or two pictures of men in the whole catalog, wearing unisex scrubs. Some of the catalogs only depict their male models as doctors in lab coats.
the lady who wrote this is either a dumb hick or did not continue her education past the NCLEX
it's women like you who keep your gender down if people in the past always thought the way you do you'd still be in the kitchen doing the dishes serving me my food i'll wear panties the day we reverse womens suffrage i'll dance around in panties naked for you once we take your right to vote away in case you don't know what suffrage means
have a great life and don't get mad lil' lady one day you'll see me probably as your boss
I have heard on a lot of things but this takes the cake. In the 18 years I have been a nurse, I have never had the need nor the desire to show my underwear.
Not that its relevant, but even being as queer as a 3 dollar bill, I have never had the desire to wear panties.
Yeah, I know... But it sure stirred up the forum, didn't it
Surprisingly enough, there are a few people out there that have feelings similar to those expressed in the article. I have another article somewhere in the NurseServer archives, and as soon as I can find it, I'll share it with the gang. This one was also published in AJN.

I checked and that letter is from a FETISH site. It is some type of fantasy writing and has no relevance at all.

I've posted that same point twice but no one seems to listen. Just follow it back to the original site and you will see that it is just a fetish site for some really strange people who enjoy degrading men by making them wear women's clothing.
For some reason an old song about lumberjacks and Monty Python comes to mind...
I'm not sure where this person gets their information. First of all male nurses were first in the role of caretakers. You must have nodded off during the history of nursing which makes me wonder what else you might have missed. Men were serving in the care role all the way back to Crimean war. The only women at that time that would "lower" themselves to that station were prostitutes.
Even the dimly lit lantern of Florence Nightengale as she checked her men was subject. My instructors tell me that she died of syphilis the cause was unknown. RIGHT! All those men in need of comforting and a really caring woman?
I don't mean to demean her contributions but...Get a life.
I kind of like seeing the panty lines delineating the female form. You need to get a zipper in YOUR pants before you start bragging. My field is psychiatry and I already have you diagnosed. We are all made different for a reason. We all have gifts to give. Stop trying to make male nurses into cross dressers. Me thinks you have spent way too much time analyzing men's undergarments which in itself is subject to question. Get you mind on your job. I would hate to have somebody like you taking care of me trying to guess whether I'm wearing low rise briefs or boxers while your calculating my dose of medication. It sounds to me like you are already an expert in your "field of interest."
just FYI....AGAIN...no one on this site wrote that article. It was written by someone on some fettish site and posted here just to stir up some conversation...
I thought you were directing your post to Tracy. A bunch of people have been emailing me complaining about him when they didn't read it through. I was assuming that was the intent of your post as well...
I wasn't trying to stir things up. I thought this was a place that a person could air their views and expect a few thoughtful comments. I meant to express an opinion not step on a bunch of toes. This is a barn burning over a mouse in the hay. I apologize for my tone but not my comments. So take it or leave it.
Sojourner
I didn't say you were trying to stir things up, and this is the perfect place to air your thoughts and opinions.
I was simply stating that the very first post in this thread, was an article that soom loon on some fetish site wrote.
It looked to me like you were addressing your post to TracyR, thinking that they were the person who wrote this article. All I was trying to say is that the person who wrote this article has never even been on this site.
I was simply trying to clear up any confusion....
You weren't stepping on anyone's toes. I just wanted to make clear that no one on here shared the opinion of the writer of the article.
I am currently a male nursing student with about a year left of nursing school, and I'm sure you can all relate that in school, they make us do some of the most outrageous things, and I'm really surprised that they haven't actually asked the men to wear seamless "panties" under these all white, see through uniforms - and having wanted to be a nurse I'm sure I would have done it just to be compliant.
But COME ON! This by far has got to be the most re-dick-u-lous thing I have EVER heard. If this really was true, I am sure that I would be re-thinking my career of choice, and in all my schooling, there was never a lecture about how the underwear you wear will affect the treatment you give you your patients.
Oh do I have a responses to this balderdash! And as a female...I'm sure the males will have even more to say.
First is the fact that I really take exception to the comment toward the end (not even considering the balooney about the uniforms) regarding the fact that males aren't caring, nurturing nurses.....
The males I have been fortunate enough to work with are often more caring and empathetic than the females. Females can be and are frequently selfish, nasty, back biting women. With each other as well as the patients. Males have overcome most of that behavior with puberty. Many females haven't.
As for the uniforms...if I knew a male was wearing silk panties I'd think he had some problems! I don't want to see ANYONES underwear when they are in uniform. Most nurses I know (and I've worked all over the east coast and the mid-west) wear scrubs. I've never seen a males crotch showing. As for the t-shirt issue, most of the females I've seen wear them too...it's for the temperture as well as modesty. I'd much rather see a t-shirt than chest hair sticking out of a man's uniform. Same as I'd rather see a t-shirt rather than see down the top of a female and see her bra or breasts sticking out.
You are so far off base it isn't even funny.....I'll be interested to see other comments...especially from the male population!!

I am starting nursing school in the fall, and right now I am getting all my prereqs done.
It never entered my mind that there were different scrubs for males and females, they all kind of looked alike to me - baggy tops and baggy pants. When I am in hospitals as a non-med I looked at doctors and male and female nurses, they all looked alike to me what the guys or girls wear. What am I missing?
HOw do I know if a scub is a male or female scub? Are there any colors (besides the obvious pink and flowered designed) that are only to be worn by females?
I bought a couple of new cheap scubs at a local close out sale- how do I know if I bought male or female scubs? They are blue, and I was using them for exercising at the current time, and I was planning on wearing them in school.
When I start nursing school, are they going to tell me what Kind of scubs to get? and what color? does it matter if I wear white or blue or whatever? are there different scubs that student nurses wear, what doctors wear , and whatever?
What about the white jackets that doctors and nurses wear, what are the rules on that?
Just exactly what are the "rules" on scubs or uniforms?
I've just been sitting back and reading the follow ups to that ridiculous article I posted several months ago... WOW!
The intent was to stir up some conversation... and it seems as though I indeed accomplished my objective. ( Like shortbus said, I DO NOT share the views of the author. But remember that the article was obviously purely fiction! )
Shame on you for perpetuating sterotypes and demeaning, sexist attitudes. Your writing epitomizes the reasons why nurses continue to struggle with recognition as separate health-care specialists. How can we ever expand nursing into a true profession when there are those among us who continue to disregard every measurement of what makes nursing a true profession. Please make an attempt to fulfill some of your obligations as a professional. Try to use a higher level of intellectual functioning. Read a few academic articles about nursing. Sexism, or any form of bias and discrimination, is not the hallmark of a professional. On a more personal note: why do you spend so much time looking at your male co-worker's crotches? If working with the opposite gender is so stressful for you, perhaps you should make a career change? Maybe you can find a clerical or housekeeping job at an all-girls-school. Nursing is NOT the job for you.
Alright...I just finished reading through the thread, but I don't understand why article was this posted here in the first place. What a waste of time reading it and then responding to it. Yesterday I visited this site for the first time, and this article was the first thing I read!
It's hard to believe that this thread is still alive after all these months. It really has stirred up a lot of conversation, but also a lot of unnecessary hard feelings and negativity. Perhaps it should be laid to rest, locked so that folks might avoid a kneejerk negative response resulting in embarrassment and bad feelings towards the site.

Being a male nurse, I at first was startled, than pissed off, then just started laughing about the responses. But since so many others did, I guess I should chime in.
Believe it or not, I do believe ALL nurses should still wear all white. It sets us apart from other people in the facility, and assists in looking more professional (usually). I know not everyone buys into that, so ... that's ok ... I'll just keep wearing my whites and let everyone else wear what they want...as long as it's professional.
Since I do wear all white, I do wear a tshirt most of the time because I don't think my patients need to be seeing my chest, chesthair, or anything else that my be lingering beneath my top. As far as "drawers" go, I used to wear those damn bikini briefs, but got too much kiddng about it. Now I wear boxer briefs while I'm at work--boy, can you imagine how many people I would offend if I went "commando" while wearing whites...rofl. BTW...I would never humiliate myself or my masculinity by wearing women's underclothes.
As far as the comments on men and caring...I remember seeing an article a couple of years back quoting a study that showed male nurses were more compassionate and caring. Go Figure.
Love your response Shawn!
My significant other is a male nurse....he also wears teh boxers under his uniform....although he "goes commando" @ any other time. He always looks professional.
And I have seen him after he works a shift when he's had to call CHS because a child has been brought to the ER under suspicious circumstances. The males I know in teh nursing profession are as much so if not MORE compassionate than the females.
Tracy this is a very insulting sexist post in regards to male nurses. You need help to address your obviouse hatred towards men. This post made a nice story but I dont believe any thing of this sort ever happened. This forum is for professional educated nurses. I dont believe you are that either.
Tracy, Sorry, I didnt understand your post. I thought you wrote it turns out someone else did. The person that wrote that article like has no respect for men or for herself. We dont really wear white anymore. Usually scrubs. The worst thing I saw was a very large woman wearing a uniform with a shirt with her huge midriff hanging out. The other was a large male with his pants falling off and his boxers sticking out.

I have been following this thread for some time and boy it sure pulled some chains.
speaking of panties, we got one on our cardiologists a thong pantie with a knot in the back. He always as his panties in a wad.
Everybody.... Like ponygirl said, this IS a forum for professional nurses, but it is also a place to blow off some steam, and engage in some stimulating conversation, whether it be fact, fiction or just plain ridiculous. I first posted this ridiculous article several months ago, and it seems to be doing just what I intended it to do...
Get our members talking to each other!!!
Listen, we don't always have to be serious. Taken from 1mg.epi's last post.... let's not all get our "panties in a wad" !
BTW... I AM a male nurse, I work in the ICU, I am divorced, I have 3 grown kids, and I am proud of my profession AND I am very proud of all the other men who have chosen to be nurses. I am also especially proud of this network and this forum!
OK gang... keep on posting, and if anyone else needs to know anything about me... give me a shout, trust me, I'm an open book!
OK--If my RN husband started wearing the panties and all that other jazz--I would seriously have him evaluated!!! A man that is a nurse is not one bit different than a woman that is a mechanic--get with the times people!!! Bravo to all the men that work in this "exploding hormone" career. You are the ones that make the best partners at work and home!!
Well this attitude seems to be a symptom of the problem. Forcing a male nurse to wear women's panties and hose to work to keep them in line because nursing is a female job is insulting to all nurses.
OK...so there is a "laugh factor" to this idea, but the underlying message is offensive. No wonder male nurses are leaving the profession at such a high rate.
I have seen some ugly uniforms on male nurses. Yes, I have seen t shirts with pictures and words on them that actually show through their scrubs. (tacky) I primarily work ED so most nurses I work with wear colored scrubs and not whites. This uniform issue needs to be addressed by nursing administration...it is an administrative problem. You should address this with them and share your input. I just hope you aren't sharing your sexist, angry, male nurse must wear women's panties ideas with the male nurses because your idea comes very close to sexual harassment.
Just a viewpoint to consider.
I already wrote a response in the male forum but, it was interesting to see other responses. I say strike.. and if you can't.. then you should try to get a decision making model to find the best way to attack this problem systematically.
It will allow you to try different alternatives and decide which is best.. for example support vs. no support, long vs. short, breathability, etc.
C'mon their just drawers easy options, white boxers, briefs, boxer briefs hee hee.
You all know when TracyR posted this a long time ago this was a joke to get a rise out of people. Well this is I think the longest thread on the site. There must be a lot of interest in putting male nurses in panties or a lot of male nurses wanting to be in panties. Doen't know, Doen't want to know, this site has gone there toooooo much.
Hi,
I tend to be skeptical of people who say "studies show" and dont specify *what* study. Ive seen this article used on several nursing websites over the years to fish for interested participants. It pretends to be an article on a professional nursing concern and all it really is is a marketing vehicle and short work of erotic lit. Im not saying Tracy put this article up here with that intention. I dont know Tracy. I AM saying that about the original site it comes from though and its author/s-Susan and Ms R.L.
Like it or not nursing does have its fetish followers regardless of the nurse's gender. This particular flavor of sexuality is femdom, forced feminization-an offshoot of cross dressing, sado-masochism/bondage and domination. If you look at the website the article is on youll see this very prominently displayed on the index pages-Red Light Magazine-specializing in female control, petticoat punishment etc. Im not saying this is a bad thing. Its just a human thing. This article is not REALLY about seriously requiring male nurses to wear female clothing on the job as a more professional, more efficient, better nursing practice. There is no serious movement working towards this-its a fetish-like cross dressing in general.
This article might be better suited for the personnals section of a nursing board. I dont think its honestly what it claims to be.
as usual women trying to get one over on us men lmaso, now y would a male nurse wanna wear anything female lol , very sexist remark b a cold day in hell before i wear any of that crap lol thats what u women are for lol and yes i am a male nurse lol
OK Mr. anonymous there is a place for that and to have a uniform that is see through is vary exhibitionist and wrong for the clinical area. Sick puppy!!!!!!!!
I am a male nurse and I do happen to wear white panties under my whites so this isn't as far fetched as it may seem. I am not gay and to me it isn't really a big deal. However I don't think it should be a mandatory thing, to me it's just a uniform thing. Some male nurses don't wear colorful jackets, but I do because I feel they help to brighten up my patients days.
My opinion is very simple to say the least. No one really wants to have a Male Nurse waiting on them wearing white athletic socks, boxer shorts showing through the whites, and a white t-shirt under their top with a dirty ring around the neck. Come on fellas wake up and see the light. Get yourself some nice white nylon knee high stockings, some white satin panties and a nylon camisole to wear under your top. Top it off with a small gold ankle bracelet, a little eyeliner and a very slight touch of makeup. Seriously guys, get in touch with your feminine side and you will be a lot more professional at what you are doing and your patients will be a lot more at ease. Try it you will like it. I can tell you for a fact that my hubby who is a CNA is very happy with his dress code and he is very well liked by both his female and male patients
the men i have worked with look like horrible. they don't iron their uniforms and have those ucky white t-shirts showing under their uniform tops. also i am sick of them dressing like an emt or paramedic. they look unprofessional with wrinkled uniforms.
and why did we as females allow men into our chosen field. i have yet to work with a male nurse who doesn't try to dominate a conversation with their so called know how in treating patients. Who taught them to be so arrogant.
The article had to be a joke right?? Please tell me that there arent people who think that male nurses should dress like female nurses. It is hard enough being a male nurse with people constsntly calling your sexual preference into question without some knucklehead wanting to make us into drag queens or cross dressers at work. My uniforms are perfect. I think it unprofessional to not wear a t-shirt. I wear athletic socks because they are comfortable and absorbant. I do wear under-armour compression pants (in white of course) and catch enough grief about that.
We are male nurses and should dress as such. Like men.
I am really getting tired of this attitude. I am a single father of two and instead of getting a pat on the back from women in nursing I get comments like "It is good to see one of you doing your job." I mean come on, if we are so bad , why are male nurses so in demand. Every doc I talk to likes the male nurses better and the female supervisors will tell you they prefer the males. As for dress code and looking professional, after twelve years in the military I feel that I look real professional. Finally, if us men are so inferior then why do I see all the guys doing their job and not taking it home yet most (not all) of the females sit there and bring their home life in as well as sit there and gossip around the nurses station. Ok enough ranting and raving. Just remember we are not all bad!!
Well at least she didn't ask for a thong. I guess that is a plus for the article.
I think the point of this thread is we should be aware of what we wear. I used to wear a uniform for Law Enf. I think you get more credibility on first impressions/appearance.
I at least try to wear white underwear and a white-non-graphic/lettering t-shirt to match. I also guess I am old school and think that colored/graphic uniforms are getting outrageous. I want to be identified as CNA/Nurse not "spongebobsquarepants underoo guy"

we sure messed up a great profession with men.

I've seen a lot of nasty looking women come to work wearing old scrubs, messy stringy hair, body odor, halitosis, gaudy jewelry, cheap perfume, talking trash the whole shift. This is not a gender dominated problem. It seems to me that you are possibly taking it that way because of a general dislike towards men. Men entering the nursing profession have had nothing but a positive effect on the the profession as a whole. I'm a damn hard worker in my unit and I put up with a lot of arrogant women on a daily basis, but I just keep my mouth shut and keep on smiling. There are a lot of man-haters out there. I think you are just another one of them. Talk about arrogance! Look at your own posting!
I will continue to wear white t-shirts under my tops (and I don't even have chest hair) and knee high sock (not up to my knees though) and white boxer briefs. NO PANTIES for me. Sounds to me that his wife was trying to humilate him or just make him look like an idiot. Didn't read all the posts, but the ones I did read are funny. That guy has some issues to go along with that dress code.....J
Boy did I touch a nerve. I still maintain that men need to wash their uniforms and iron them. (i do) Also get rid of the nasty white t shirts. I'd rather see hair than a grimy t shirt. Also you women out there stand up to these arrogant men. he was just as arrogant as I was if you read your reply.
I was kind of outraged when I read this article so I looked to see who would actually publish something this silly. So I traced back the origin of this article. It is from a magazine called "Petticoated dicipline monthly". Here is their um, I dunno, "mission statement". Explains pretty much everything....
"Petticoat Discipline Monthly is a journal for mothers, wives, sisters, and aunts charged with the domestic, or school, care and upbringing of naughty boys of all ages."
"Nanny Susan believes, after long experience, that the most effective and loving way of dealing with the problems of male conceit and disobedience is strictly applied petticoating and nursery discipline. This monthly magazine will offer guidance from Nanny Susan, who will answer questions from readers concerning how to treat those immature and babyish sons, husbands, nephews, brothers, and so on whom they have under their control. "
I agree that all nurses need to maintain a presentable appearance, but asking a man to wear women's panties is beyond ridiculous. Sounds like a magazine for feminists. Should female doctors be asked to go braless and wear boxers?
the article came from some sexual fetish site. I'm still amazed that something posted as a joke to see if people would get riled up is still going strong this long. This thread has been viewed like 70,000 times. CRAZY!
Ironic, is it not, that feminists are the ones acting like neanderthals this time?
I got the usual "Good morning, ladies... and gentleman" in nursing school, and had to deal with the feminine chatter just like everyone else. It really doesn't bother me. That's the way it is. Can we change that? I don't know- I have my doubts. But I think that the whole men wearing panties thing is just the ranting of a tired old cow who has her own issues. She's probably dead now from a self-inflicted envenomation.
Ok...just a comment. I have worked with some very good looking Male urses and CNA's. The good looking ones always seem to take the time to look even better. The not so good looking ones just don't care.
The two hotties I am thinking of both wore stretchy form fitting shirts under their scrub tops and no fly scrub pants dark enough that you could not see through them. Top and pant usually matched. They both wore shades when coming on and going off shift.
I tell you what, those guys did more for the healing process of certain little old ladies than any guy in women's panties! We couldn't get them to take a shower unless these guys were on shift!
as a nursing student and E.R. Tech for the past 6 years; being the 3rd generation of Nurses. I totally agree that Nurses (male and female) have gotten severly sloppy over the years. But I have to say I'd rather see a man in unisex scrub pants and a plain t-shirt to see a woman in a lowwww cut tank top with her c-section scars popping in between her short shirt and her rolled down scrub pants, that just so happens to reveal her THONG strings. If you want to talk about uniform reform work on the women first. I will be the first to admit if you wear scrubs they should look clean and neat, a good ironing once in a while will keep good seams, and yes I do wear TED socks (to the knee only) but it will be a cold day in **** before I wear womens underwear. Also If anyone is that concerned over a y shape seam... you're a perv. I also agree that the uniform companies are very female oriented. The only company that I know of that makes uniforms just for men is Landau and I am not that impressed, the pants never stay up and the jacket cuffs make great tuniquets. Just a thought any body got some ideas about starting their own uniform company for guys, I'll be your first customer. jslater@wyan.org
I totally agree....
As a nurse for 20 years...the uniforn catalogs leave much to be desired for the Male RN....I beleive it is still 2 pages...mostly lab coats, of scrubs that look like something from 1960......We need to move forward....
As far as panties...Look We have been working hard to clean up the image of the male nurse....I continually get the questions of gender slurring due to my job, and my chosen profession....The looks and coments continue....
We do not need to spend as much time as we have on crackpot idea's and suggestions as in previous posts......
my answer... scrubs and a tee shirt...I am here to take care of patients...not win a beauty contest...... :)

I actually saw and read this article about a year ago. I was so angry that I emailed the link on the website with an angry reply. I was informed through their response to the email that the story was actually a joke. The editor said not to take it seriously, because it was apparently a humor article that was published as part of a transvestite website.
Good day to all.I am a student Nurse who has just started school.I wish to know something for example the right defination of nursing and the difference between health care and nursing.
Nursing is a field i love so much and i realy wish to excel in this career.
May God Bless u all.
What are the moderators thinking? This whole "male nurse in panties" thing is stupid, foolish, and should not even be associated with a nursing discussion group. It's really not even amusing. As I read the input to this site, it appears to be mostly immature teeny-boppers are participating. This is not a serious nursing discussion group--it's a forum for fools, and this fool is signing off.
Guilty as charged. I wear the athletic socks. I try to wear the whitest of my 'collection' to work. I work in psych therefore gold chains are out (can be used as a weapon against you and lead to death secondary to strangulation). The rest of my 'ensemble' includes boxer briefs of any color, ya know, whatever I'm feeling that day, and I actually wear biking shorts over those only because I have a bit of SI instability and it keeps my lower back from aching. The biking shorts keep the 'package' from showing also, unless you're really looking for something, and I usually wear a darker tone of scrubs therefore my undies can't be detected for color. Although I don't spend a whole lot of time co ordinating my outfit prior to going to work, if it's not going to be a hot night, I wear a black T shirt (shudder) under my top, or perhaps something in a green or a blue (stated in his best Christopher Lowell dialect) to bring out my eyes( bbbwwaaaaahhhhh),just depends what color scrubs I'm wearing. After reading this I'll have to observe my co-workers a little more carefully to see if they are laughing at me. Not that I'll change but, just to know. On the plus side, my shoes are always in good shape and I"m clean shaven. I have a fu man chu or whatever around my mouth but I keep it shaved real close (nothing narc or '70s porn star-looking) and my hair is short enough to where it's never out of place. My previous employers have complimented my appearance in the past during periodic evaluations so, until that changes I'm really not going to worry about primping and co ordinating and surely not panty hose (nevva dat).

Well since you have signed off and won't be reading this I guess it's too late to tell you to chill out. The whole thread was a goof and if I remember, it was started by one of the moderators. If you want to have a discussion about something serious, why don't you start a thread yourself? I know that I will be anxious to contribute.

I enjoyed this post! Your signature is hilarious too! You nearly made me wet myself and I shot coke (the cola) out my nose.
My scrubs have shrunk and I've gotten bigger. I haven't worked as a nurse in several months but the last few times I notice the "package" was needing a bit of room in the front. Went out and bought some bigger, darker scrubs the next day. My scrubs had been tight on me for a whie but it wasn't a big deal until I looked in the mirror.
I can't believe you really wear biker shorts over boxers. That's nuts! It seems to me it would be super uncomfortable. If you're going to do that, and need the support, but an athletic girdle. NO, not THAT kind of girdle. Like one you wore in sports so you didn't have to wear a jock or whatever..., and ditch the boxers. I would think that would be a lot more comfortable.
Old School-
I sent that person a Private Message but they probably didn't get it. It must not have been the first offensive post to them because they have quite a few posts already, so I don't know.
I'm not going to delete this thread when it's basically A JOKE and it's got this site more traffic, more views, and more responses than ALL the other ones put together.
Of course, it still gets search engine traffic for "men in panties" searches and crap like that, but as soon as they realize it isn't the "SMUT" they were looking for they leave.
As a male in this profession for 27.5 years,I can't believe that we are still giving this issue ANY legs with the answering posts. Am I the only one that clicked on the web address or realized that the original author is from Hampstead....UK. The author's website is a "FETISH" website dealing with the forced Feminization of Men. There nuff said ya'll....:frustrated:

Well Shortbus, like you said, this thread gets the site a lot of traffic. But why do you want that kind of traffic?? How is traffic generated from smut and porn searches going to benefit this website?
Now I understand that this thread was started as a joke and somehow it has lasted for several years, but it is in poor taste and it is degrading to men, therefore it has caused some bad feelings and annoyance on the board. Let's flip the coin here, how about we start a thread about a female nurse who is forced to degrade herself by submitting to her husband's desires and masculinize herself by wearing men's brief underwear to work, no bra, and embarass herself by admitting to the whole story in front of a patient? How long would that thread stay up? Would there be any objection from the female nurses that frequent this site? It would be an interesting sociological experiment to see the reactions to that posting.

I tried to make the same point a couple years back, but no one seemed to take notice.:whatever:
What a load of crap I say!!!!
What a load of total insane crap !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Let me tell you somthing...... I often am told i touch many lives .... that i take the extra time ..... that i know how to listen and to do my job in such a way that helps them heal... im no miss fancy nurse and noone ever cares! I do my job and do it well ..... my uniform has no wrinkles and my hair is tidy and pulled back but im no miss fashion bug lol...... and if you do your job right? there is no need to be.... and all this yelling from me is coming from a nurse (me) who happens to LOVE white uniforms , dresses , skirts and the like buttttttt when im in my scrubs as well? i get the same darn reaction as i do when im all miss nurse in white...... and whoever would even dare to say a man should not wear an undergarment under his top ..... or whoever would dare to force them to wear panties to conceal a darn fly? ..... come on ppl .... this is the problem with our universe today..... too much time is spent on crap and not enough time is spent on the important things in life.......
wow is that author ever half baked!!!!!!!!!!!!
by the way.... there ar emany men who do enjoy soft nylons and panties and thats fine too im not judgemental and in fact i have a few friends who do this butttttttttttttt they do it by choice and NOONE should make anyone do such a thing!
ok im breathing..... im calming down now.... im relaxed LOL
:endof:
I've been an RN for 25 years and this topic of the proper professional dress code rises from its dank grave to shake everyone up needlessly. We've talked about dress code everwhere I've worked and it all boils down to men and women need to wear clean , neat scrubs or uniforms in a way that looks professional and that they care about their appearance. Piercings, or tattoos need to be tactfull, and tastefull. This idea of men wearing panties to improve the appearance of their pants is just someones attempt at generating discussion of dress codes. I'm sorry, but people, we do have to look nice and professional, I know nurses want to be individuals but the public does have an image problem with nurses not wearing white as we did in the old days. I think people need to insist on pants not being see through, which is why I 'm glad some people get to wear scrubs, they are not transparent in the right light. You know, we have to much to worry about rather than if this woman is wearing a thong or not, or if this male RN has chest hair sticking through his shirt.
