At least someone remembered: Red Cross celebrates nursing - Daily Democrat Online

On Thursday, the American Red Cross of Yolo County will hold a special celebration honoring the 100th anniversary of American Red Cross nursing. The Red Cross Nursing Service was formally established by Jane Delano in 1909.

Celebrating Yolo County Nurses will be 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Red Cross chapter office, 120 Court Street, Woodland. Any interested nurses are urged to attend and learn about how they can become more involved with the American Red Cross. Desserts and hot cider will be served while guests hear how local nurses have volunteered for disasters (9-11 and Katrina) or how they have worked in local sheltering operations.

Coordinating the evening is Katie Kelsch, a recent nursing graduate from Samuel Merritt University, who has been interning at the Yolo County Chapter.

Red Cross nursing has had a major role in the historical evolution of nursing and nursing leadership in the United States, with many Red Cross nurses playing strategic roles in the development of American nursing.

Today, nurses serve in many specialty roles in Disaster Response and Preparedness, Health and Safety training, Service to Military Families, Biomedical and International Services.

As in the past, nurses serve in leadership roles at the local, state and national level to promote and enhance the Red Cross humanitarian mission and to promote public health and safety.

Student nurses also are involved in many aspects of local service delivery.
