Hello, I was just wondering if anyone practices as a Certified Registerd Nurse Anesthetist? I was hoping to get a little insight about the kind of work they do. I have a little bit of an idea from what I have researched, but primary information is a plus. Thanks to those who reply. Also if anyone could provide a great place to further my knowledge on this type of Nursing, I would appreciate the help.
I'm not one but work closely with them. They do just what the docs do except they can't be the only person from anesthesia in the building during surgery so if there is 1 surgery going on doc has to do it or be in the building. I don't think the CRNA's to pain control injections for just the sake of pain control but give all kinds of anesthesia for surgery/labor
The American Association of Nurse Anesthetists, would be a good place to start. www.aana.org, I think it's .org. You will need your BSN, a GPA of 3.4 or better, a GRE score >1100, and 1-2 years of strong ICU experence. There are many schools for this , and they are on the website. Just to clarify, CRNAs CAN be "the only person from anesthesia in the building." Many states do not require "physician supervision," and many, many CRNAs practice as solo providers, in any number of settings (including pain management practices). As someone mentioned, the AANA website will provide an abundance of information about practice and educational requirements.

Crnamae just to clarify: in my hospital they can not be the only one in the building for OR cases. They can come in and do epidurals for labor but if there is an OR case in my hospital the CRNA can do it only if the MD is in the building. Often times the MD will say call the CRNA in for the case and they will do it but MD has to be there. So no matter what the AANA says they can do our hospital policy says NO and I've worked other places that way too. I wasn't saying everywhere but where I'm at that's how it's done.

Just curious, what state are you in?
Of course, hospital policies vary from facility to facility; there are some instances in which anesthesia is provided by all CRNAs, with NO MDs, and vice versa. There are also team approaches, with a mixed crew.
It's good to be aware of the possibilities if one is looking into the profession.

I work in KY. Don't know that the MD has to be around all over KY but at my hospital the MD has to be there except for epidural/spinals. LIke I said the CRNA can do the section as long as the MD is in house. He can be in the bathroom, in the lounge or in the OR just inhouse someplace. I have a problem when the MD is in house doing something and I need an epidural. If the MD is walking out the door and I tell him he'll say call the CRNA who might be at home 30 minutes away instead of doing it himself. We don't have in house anesthesia 24/7 they work in general 7-5 M-F with rotating call after hours and weekends always a MD and CRNA both oncall. You call who you need.
