And the letters go out soon: Nursing program picks first batch of students - Hawaii News - Starbulletin.com
Chaminade University will begin sending acceptance letters next week for its first class of nursing students after the state Board of Nursing approved the school's plans to establish a nursing program.
The first students in the undergraduate program will begin classes in August and graduate in 2014.
Stephanie Genz, Chaminade's dean for nursing, said even before Thursday's approval, the school received 80 to 90 completed applications. About 1,200 people have called or e-mailed asking for information on the program.
Some of the students have already been accepted into Chaminade and are awaiting notice of whether they will be accepted into the first class of about 72 freshmen students.
"We certainly have a lot of interest in the program," Genz said, noting that applications have come from as far away as Guam and the U.S. mainland.
Genz is also interviewing to hire eight full-time faculty and adjunct faculty members as the program grows.
She expects to have about 300 students by the time the first class of about 40 to 50 students graduates in 2014.
Genz said a combination of experienced nurses retiring and an aging population in need of more nursing care is behind the demand for more nurses in Hawaii and elsewhere.
"The nursing program will address nursing shortages in local communities, the Pacific region and the U.S. continent," Chaminade President Brother Bernard Ploeger said in a news release.
Planning for the new program began under former Chaminade President Sue Wesselkamper and was helped by a $5 million endowment from Dr. Edison Miyawaki. The school is named after Miyawaki's wife, Sallie.
Dr. Lawrence K.W. Tseu donated $1 million to finish construction on the nursing school facilities, which will be named after Tseu and his wife, BoHing Chan Tseu.
