I live in Indiana and am traveling to California to take on an assignment. It is written in my contract that I will receive $500 tax free travel reimbursement. My cost of traveling to California exceeds the amount being reimbursed. At the end of the year can I take my actual travel expenses and deduct the $500 dollars and get the rest reimbursed at the end of the year on my taxes. I believe that mileage itself is 51-55 cents per mile. I'm hoping that somebody can guide me to correct understanding on how this would work. Thanks!

Thanks Joseph for your response. I do have a tax home here in Indiana. I will be sure to document all my expenses. Have a great day!
