Hello everyone,
I will be traveling shortly and will most likely be taking a ms position to start out. I currently have 3 years exp. in Hem/onc/bmt and 2years in a step down respiratory care unit working with patients on ventilators. Im wondering if I'd be able to handle working in an ICU position/stepdown unit. Im wondering what your experiences have been working in differnt areas while traveling and where you initially started out. Is your recruiter helpful at matching your qualifications with certain jobs? Thanks for looking!

Most hospitals are going to want at least 2 years current experience in your specialty, so you should be looking at assignments that fit your experience. If you have only worked with vented patients, but not actually in an ICU, then you should not try to take an ICU assignment. Traveling is not the time to learn a new area- you will get very little (1-2 days) orientation, and will be expected to function completely independently after that.

I would suggest med surg for 1st assignment or hem onc job. I've seen plenty of heme onc jobs posted.
The main thing is this:
You don't want to work out of the Scope of your Practice. And Amanda is RIGHT. You get a quick orientation on the floor. You are expected to start taking a full assignment by 2 days. The facility will cancel you if you are not performing well. And make sure you tell the nurse managers during an interview your strengths and things you have not done.
I've never done a cell saver for ortho and let them know right up front. Don't set yourself up to get fired or harm your license.
