What are your thoughts about the firing/resigning of mid-level USDA employee Shirley Sherrod about a alleged racist remark about a white farmer?
The story is unfolding stating Ms. Sherrod was telling a story about something that happened years ago to make a point and FOX News edited it and the talk has begun.
In general, how do you feel about racisim and as we know, it will never cease. No matter who makes the comments or who is being hurt, it will not be detered.
Please read my post in the Book Reader's thread! The series I mention, by Elizabeth George is a good pointer on 'racism' elsewhere in the world: Pakistani's are considered 'coloreds', and there is a comment by a character along the lines of 'Why didn't so-and-so move to America? They take class into consideration down there with your shoe size' or something to that effect. Also, one of the characters (Agatha Shaw) shows her 'predjudice', and her grandson states 'Gram, we're not living the last days of the Raj.'. You'd have to read the story to see the predjudice oozing on both sides.
Yet in America, we have Miss America, but there is also Miss Black America..... Miss America has had some 'people of color' (let's be PC!) in the line up, but do they have any whites? How often has Jesse Jackson been in the forefront honking about something?
I don't know if it wiill ever end.
I grew up with the emphasis on "racial equality", yet I still see subtle and not so subtle evidence that racism is alive and well. Just go to any workplace and listen in on conversations about the different ethnicities working there. For example, if a person is not a good worker, they are not a good worker as an individual; why always the emphasis on "another _______ lazy CNA", or "be careful, the _______'s will always make sure you are doing all the work"? Are you complaining about lazy coworkers or are you complaining about ______ lazy coworkers? Seems the adjective could be left out.
Boy, there is still alotta flack going on about this....
Well, some apologized. What a terrible way to go from a job based on misconceptions and editing of the truth. Many have before her and many, I am sure, are to come.
Sigh......
