Some of the comments on the story:
The nursing shortage comes down to what you define as a shortage. The reality is there are lots of nurses in this province, but far far too many only work part-time (by their own choosing) and then pick up shifts and OT when they want; so that they in fact actually work fulltime+ hours, but again only when they choose to work the extra shifts. The MNU knows this and fully supports it, who wouldn't it's a good if your a nurse, not so good if you are trying to run an efficient cost effective health care system. The Province on their part has done next to nothing, likely because the MNU is one of the biggest backers of the NDP and always haul out their commercials saying how great the system is under the NDP come election time.
As for those who said nurses don't get paid well, I'd say that $75,000-85,000/year before overtime certainly isn't a bad wage. If you wanted to make over a $100k you should have been a doctor I guess.
And:
Gee, good grades required to get into a faculty or select the courses you want? Isn't that how university is supposed to be? There are certain faculties where if you're below a certain GPA, don't bother. Now, nursing appears to be one of them.
Also:
Why would they implement this on 4th year students!?!
If this is what they want to do, it should start with 1st year students.
That is horrible that they are essentially postponing the graduation of some 4th year students who have worked very hard to graduate on time!
