A Winnipeg-based nursing program taught by ACC has proven so popular that they have had to cut off applications.

With 250 applications on the waiting list for Winnipeg, the college says it has enough qualified applicants to fill the program for the next three years.

Currently, ACC has the capacity to accept 190 new Practical Nursing students each year. Seventy of these students are accepted in Winnipeg, 70 are accepted in Brandon, and the remainder is accepted into two rural rotating sites throughout the province.

The two-year Practical Nursing Diploma Program will not accept any applications for the Winnipeg Training Centre until January 2012.

"The number of applications this year is up substantially since this time last year," says Karen Hargreaves, ACC’s Dean of the School of Health and Human Services, noting that it has always been a program in high demand.

"The critical need for Practical Nurses throughout the province is high," Hargreaves said. "There are approximately 3,000 Licensed Practical Nurses working in the province and this number is expected to continue to grow. Employment within the profession is also increasing, with opportunities to work in various areas including acute care, the Emergency Room, the Operating Room and dialysis."

Students are encouraged to apply at other locations as ACC continues to accept Practical Nursing applications for September and January intakes in Brandon (current wait list is approximately one and one-half years) and for Deloraine (starting in January 2011). A limited number of seats may also be available in Portage la Prairie in September 2010.
