A fake nursing school in Los Angeles has been shut down and has agreed to pay its cheated students a total of $500,000 in restitution.

The RN Learning Center created the illusion that it offered an accredited nursing program by holding graduations and classes while cashing in on $20,000 tuition from as many as 300 students, said California Attorney General Jerry Brown in a statement Wednesday.

"The school destroyed the aspirations of hundreds of students who also lost thousands of dollars in wasted tuition," said Brown, adding that the school would "pay back its former students as fully as it can."

There was no answer at a listing for RN Learning Center on Wednesday.

The school targeted mostly Filipino-Americans already working in the health field, and students traveled to the Philippines for a month of clinical study in hospitals and prisons, Brown said. Students took classes in anatomy, microbiology and learned to give sutures.

When about 50 students applied to the state nursing board to take the license examinations to become registered nurses, they were notified that their school was unlicensed, and none of their course work would be counted.

RN Learning Center never applied to the nursing board to obtain accreditation as a school of nursing, said Brown.
In addition to paying restitution, RN Learning Center owner Junelou Chalico agreed to never open a nursing school in California.
