    American Sentinal's new DNP

    FYI: http://news.yahoo.com/s/prweb/201008...prweb4386184_6

American Sentinel University has designed one of the first online Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) in Executive Leadership degree programs to offer nurse executives doctorates as an alternative to PhD's in practice-based fields, both within and outside of healthcare. The two-year nursing leadership DNP enables Master's-prepared nurses and nurses with Master's degrees in other disciplines (MBA, MHA, MEd) to practice within a complex, highly computerized health system to gain a doctoral degree in nursing leadership. Aurora, CO (PRWEB) August 16, 2010 -- Complexity and uncertainty in the healthcare system have created a void in nursing leadership - the training of executive leaders. While clinical degrees are extremely important, practical nursing leadership degrees at the doctoral level are significantly lacking, yet are increasingly desirable.

That's why American Sentinel University has designed one of the first online Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) in Executive Leadership degree programs to offer nurse executives doctorates as an alternative to PhD's in practice-based fields, both within and outside of healthcare.

"We are excited to introduce a degree program that has been noticeably missing in the healthcare marketplace - a DNP for executive nurses who want to specialize in practical leadership skills," said Catherine Garner, PhD, RN, Provost and Dean, Health Sciences and Nursing at American Sentinel University.

The two-year nursing leadership DNP enables Master's-prepared nurses and nurses with Master's degrees in other disciplines (MBA, MHA, MEd) to practice within a complex, highly computerized health system to gain a doctoral degree in nursing leadership.

The program features a flexible online format, eight-week-long courses, two-week breaks, a bridge program for those nurses with non-nursing Master's degrees, and just two 10-day residencies.

"Busy nurse executives will not only find our program livable and manageable, but fulfilling and enjoyable. Plus, they will acquire specialized leadership credentials, making them all the more valuable to their organizations and the healthcare marketplace," says Dr. Garner.

Importance of Doctoral Credentials for Today's Nurse Executives

Doctoral credentials are important for today's nurse executives because nurses must manage ever-increasing complexities and unprecedented challenges, which include:

-Developing methodologies that will coordinate care across the continuum
    -Lowering cost and improving quality

-Understanding the dynamics of policy, economic and regulatory issues

    -Strategically using technology and data

-Leading upwards of 60% of the healthcare workforce in this country

Nurse executives require advanced education that will enhance effective decision-making and analytic and leadership skills. It's becoming more and more accepted that nurse executives earn advanced degrees that will broaden and enhance their current knowledge and skill base and that will give higher-level evaluation and policy skills directly applicable to their work environment.

"There's a distinct body of knowledge assigned to nursing leadership, and I want to become a practitioner of that knowledge," says Roy L. Simpson, Vice President of Nursing at Cerner Corporation and a student in the program's first cohort. "American Sentinel's non-traditional online approach, the bridge program, and the two short residencies will allow me to pursue a doctoral degree while I continue to work and travel."

The 42-credit program is open to nursing executives who have at least three years of senior executive experience and a Master's degree. No GRE or other placement testing is required. The next cohort group begins on January 31, 2011. Registration ends by November 23, 2010.

Notice it is an alternative to practice-based DNP's. What with the economy being the way it is, and jobs......
