Indiana nursing program to revamp graduation program

The College of Nursing, Health and Human Services is potentially reconfiguring their early graduation program to accommodate students who have already attained a baccalaureate degree.

The program, which has yet to be fully decided on, would allow students with existing degrees to enter the nursing program with the potential to graduate in 15 months, with the inclusion of summer courses.

This option, which is tentatively being referred to as the Accelerated Second-Degree Baccalaureate Nursing Program Track, would be open to 15 to 30 students, depending on department resources, said Gloria Plascak, Chairperson for the Baccalaureate Nursing Department.

This would not only allow for advanced students to graduate early, but also relinquish seats to nursing students in the fall and spring semesters.

The new program was part of the discussion involving a recent petition given to the nursing department by a group of students.

The nursing department had canceled two courses during the summer semester Nursing: 484 and 486.

The 27 students who had signed the petition argued that, without the ability to take the courses during the summer semester, many would need to apply for an entire docket of courses in order to remain full time students and retain their scholarships.

According to an email from the department in response to the petitioning students, the classes had been canceled in an effort to dedicate staff and resources towards the Second-Degree program, as well as preparation for an accreditation visit from the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission this fall.

Executive Director of Nursing Programs Marcia Miller noted that not all of the students who signed the petition were eligible for the summer courses.

In addition to the two courses that would need to be completed students would need to do onsite-learning courses at medical establishments.

After a discussion within the nursing committee the decision was made to offer the courses to an eligible group of students this summer.

"My commitment to students is to give [them] courses on a reliable schedule," Miller said.

    Unhappy

Nice to see a willingness to accommodate a group of students instead of what was done at my school. When the curriculum changed, students who got behind the eight ball were all given ulimatums and many of them consequently did not graduate. No accommodation at all.

It is nice that the students are accomodated. My school gave us credit for prior education, whether it was as an ADN or Diploma degree, and so much for the LPN's. Makes things more conducive to higher education.
