Question Does Hospital Policy Override BON Policy?

Florida's BON policy states LPNs cannot administer IV meds "unless under the direct supervision of the registered professional nurse or physician," and defines direct supervision as "on the premises and immediately and physically available." The hospital's policy states LPNs cannot give IV meds, period. Does the hospital policy override the BON policy in this case?

It's my understanding that each and every hospital can make it's own policy as defined by it's risk management department. They do not have to let LPNs administer IV meds. In hospitals where I worked LPNs who administered IV meds had to be IV certified by a preceptor and take a written test. I think the BON policy helps define an individual hospital's policy where LPNs are allowed to perform IV therapy.

The BON covers ALL nurses, regardless of where you work: LTC, hospital, etc. However, as hppy put it: Hospitals still can cover their own butt.

PS, welcome back Maddie! We missed you!
