The county home is officially for sale, according to action taken by the Grundy County Board on Tuesday night.

Board members unanimously approved allowing the county to negotiate with interested buyers in setting a price for the former nursing home. The board also approved retaining legal counsel to represent the county during the closing process.

In February, 85 percent of voters agreed to give the county the option to sell its county home, which was severely in debt.

Two private parties have contacted the county to purchase the building, according to County Administrator Dan Duffy.

The price for the home will not be revealed to the public until negotiations are complete, Duffy said. However, the county is still accepting offers.

The 46,000-square-feet building has been appraised at $1.4 million. However, the nursing home caused the county to incur an internal debt of $1.6 million before it became nonoperational in September 2005.

At that time the county leased the building to Morris Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center. That lease expired in July, allowing the county to move forward with its plans to sell the property.

The county conducted a two-day giveaway last summer, during which 60 beds, 30 wheelchairs and other medical equipment were “given back to the taxpayers,” Duffy said. Repairs were also made to get the building ready for sale.

And yet they built a new building, from what I understand.
