'Nursing the soldiers of the Great War' lecture

It's short notice, but sounds interesting! From Aberdeen City:

The nursing of soldiers of the Great War will be the subject of a talk at 12.30pm on Thursday 27 January at Aberdeen Maritime Museum, Shiprow.

The talk is part of The Caring Profession, an exhibition currently on show at the museum until Saturday 05 February.

The lunchtime talk will explore a number of themes relating to nursing and war inspired by a fascinating exhibit in the exhibition: Nurse Jeannie L Daniel's autograph book which contains poems, aphorisms and sketches contributed by soldiers convalescing in Oldmill Hospital, Aberdeen (now Woodend) between 1917 and 1918.

Curator Jenny Brown and local conservator Fiona Butterfield will give an overview of this key artefact and discuss how recent conservation has enhanced our understanding of its history.

Colin Macduff (reader) and Andrew McKie (lecturer) from Robert Gordon University's School of Nursing and Midwifery will then go on to explore some of the themes that arise for the nursing profession.

With contributions from two of Scotland's leading contemporary poets, Sheena Blackhall and Gerard Rochford, the talk aims to generate insights from a range of perspectives.

Aberdeen Art Gallery and Museums curator Jenny Brown said: "The autograph book is one of my favourite objects in the collection. It is such a powerful reminder of the Great War. Exploring its history through the poetry written by the soldiers really brings their personal stories to life."

Places are limited for the hour-long talk so booking is essential, telephone (01224) 337714 for more details.
