Otterbein University will offer a new Doctor of Nursing Practice degree, with classes beginning this spring.

The program will be aimed at providing advanced-practice nurses the opportunities to become the most highly educated and qualified practitioners in their field. Graduates will be able to advance their careers in clinical settings, administration or the world of teaching.

"The (degree) will enhance their professional education and bring their educational preparation in line with other healthcare professionals, similar to the Pharmacology Doctorate or the Physical Therapy Doctorate," said Barbara Schaffner, chairwoman of Otterbein's nursing department.

The program is geared for students who already have their master's degree and want to complete an advanced degree in two years. Classes will be small, with many offered online and others in traditional sit-down classrooms.
