The Saginaw County Medical Society Foundation has announced the availability of applications for nursing scholarships, and low interest loans to medical students with ties to the Saginaw area.

Loans are interest free while the student is in medical school, with simple interest of 5 percent per annum during a residency program. One-half of the interest is forgiven if the individual sets up practice in Saginaw County. Students past their first year of medical school are generally considered.

Nursing scholarships of $500 are available to individuals that are residents of Saginaw County, currently enrolled in a nursing program and have a grade point average no lower than 2.79. Students who reside in Saginaw County only to attend Delta or Saginaw Valley State University are not eligible. High school seniors are also not eligible to apply.

The foundation is funded through physician donation. Loan amounts range from $1,000 to $10,000, with some students receiving loans several years in a row.

Applications for both medical student loans and nursing scholarships are available until April 15 from the Saginaw County Medical Society, 350 St. Andrews, Suite 242, Saginaw, Mich. 48638-5988.
