The National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN®) (www.ncsbn.org) will hold a Long-term Care Conference: Regulatory Perspective and Future Implications Aug. 23-24, 2011, in Chicago. Examining issues of concern in long-term care facilities from a nursing regulatory perspective, the conference will focus on the promotion of patient safety with effective communication across the workforce, scope of practice issues and team building.

"We will tackle issues such as educating long-term care health care workers, working with Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services regulations, measuring quality outcomes and building the most effective teams to serve those in long-term care facilities," comments Nancy Spector, PhD, RN, director, NCSBN Regulatory Innovations.

NCSBN recognizes that as the U.S. population ages and improved health care enables individuals to live longer, the need for long-term care services increases. The growing number of residents in long-term care facilities requires greater reliance on unlicensed assistive personnel (UAPs), such as nurse aides/nursing assistants (NAs) and medication aides/assistants (MAs) to provide services. This practice has regulatory impact on registered nurses (RNs) and licensed practical/vocational nurses (LPN/VNs) when they delegate care to UAPs. Additionally, there are many other situations unique to long-term care that have regulatory consequences.

To explore the present and future regulatory implications in long-term care, as well as envision a preferred future, NCSBN has gathered a diverse group of experts to present sessions and open a dialogue with attendees. Among many notable speakers, Susan Reinhard, PhD, FAAN, senior vice president for Public Policy at AARP, who is a nationally recognized authority in nursing and health policy, will provide the keynote address, "How Does the Institute of Medicine's Future of Nursing Report Affect Nurses in Long-term Care."

Those who will benefit the most from attending this conference include: educators of UAPs, MAs, LPN/VNs and RNs who work in long-term care; long-term care/nursing home administrators; state and federal administrative agency staff; and UAPs, LPN/VNs and RNs who work in long-term care.

The registration fee for the 2011 NCSBN Long-term Care Conference is $350 per person. For more information or to register visit www.ncsbn.org/events.
