    Retention

I'm not the original poster but I think they mean tips to retaining good nurses.

While it is generally accepted that the nursing shortage is over (as evidenced by the difficulty new grads have getting hired) retention of strong staff nurses is an important part of any organization. I think the less red tape and paperwork a nurse has to do so he/she can focus on quality patient care is very important.

As nurse I don't really care about getting a free coffee cup or another pen. What I want is streamlined paperwork and supportive administration that has my back when the poop hits the fan. I love training new grads but my patient load which in Psych is often 18 or 20 to 1 should reflect that I am training. My current caseload in the The DD group homes is 36 patients. I don't see eveyone of them everyday but I am required to spend a documented hour per week with each client plus accompany them on Physician, dentist and other specialist appointments, update their care plans, monitors their medications etc....

My boss is pretty terrific and lets us all know each day how much he appreciates our efforts and the difference we make in the lives of our consumers. It better than any acute care facility I ever worked at.

hello , great. i agree with Hppy. praise and approvals are very important, whatever in our daily life or in our work, we need recognization for what we did, and that's also a way to keep nurse.

Improving the work environment is just one of the factors in order to retain nurses. Aside from that, another way to keep nurses is by reducing workload my making the unit adequately staffed!
