So I took my new resident to the medical school today and had and interesting conversation with one of the Dean's who actually see's our clients because no one else will. I asked him what his thoughts were on healthcare reform and he said for patients there would be a general decrease in services due to allocation of care ie....rationing and as for Doctors, Nurses and caregivers? He said ........"if it's not repealed we're all screwed" as we will all see a big decrease in salaries and job security.
This man is a highly respected physician who founded and built a college of osteopathic medicine ..... and he's thinking of hanging up his lab coat.......

Out my way,it seems lawyers outnumber doctors.
And I swear that, on TV, there are at least 2-3 commercials every hour of 'Has your loved one been hurt in a Nursing Home?'
I hear your Cougar,
with two nurses and two lawyers in the family we are split even because the teacher doesn't get a vote.
This resident we got is a real mess, He was an emergency placement when his home was closed by the health department. he is 12 pounds underweight, has bruises and burn scars all over his body and is absolutely terrified of being touched. Couple that with profound MR, Autism and psychosis and we have a real challenge on our hands.
At least the owners of his previous home will be charged with neglect and abuse - But it makes me really mad.

*Sigh* can't think of what to say about that.
Thinking about those commercials some more here: families do put their loved ones in facilities for a reason, correct? After all, we have to consider price of home health, someone in the house perhaps 24/7, etc. Once it gets to the point where the loved one needs to be placed.....whole new ball game.
Of course, in NH's, let's say we'd have 60 people with 60 different personalities and diagnoses. Bed sores? True, most are avoidable, but some are not. One place I worked at, one guy would plant his feet on the ground as he got pushed in his w/c. Of course, he went face first onto the floor. Thank heaven we did prior charting on behaviours, as the ambulance chasers would try to have a field day. Oh, and this guy did have some mental issues/retardation.
Public Aid is so far behind in paying for things here, it is pathetic: One med that might be 'the best' for your new guy may not be covered on the PA preferred list. Figure that into the equation. Services are already cut so much......
I could go on, but I am too ticked to think straight!
