March 21, 2002 -- Regardless of income or insurance, racial and ethnic minorities are more likely to receive lower-quality healthcare than whites do, according to a new, congressionally mandated report released this week. Those differences in the way illnesses such as cancer, heart disease, and HIV are treated in minority patients may be fueling higher death rates for minorities.
"Disparities in the healthcare delivered to racial and ethnic minorities are real and are associated with worse outcomes in many cases, which is unacceptable," said Alan Nelson, MD, chair of the National Academies' Institute of Medicine committee that compiled the report, in announcing the findings.
