Sounds like that agency is just trying to get out of paying you the stipend... from what I understand, one of you can take the free housing, and the other can take the stipend. I would find another company....
Hello,
My wife and I are both RN's getting ready to start traveling in the near future. We still have a few questions regarding housing stipends. It is our understanding that one of us will take the housing and the other will recieving a housing stipend. We want to know if this is a normal practice for married traveling RN's?
One of the travel agencies that we have been dealing with stated that we are not entitled to the "housing stipend" and the free housing. That it is illegal to give us a housing stipend because we are married... that if we werent married and traveling that they could give us the stipend....
Yet other agencies have no problem giving out the stipend. Any answers?
Thank you.

I believe Joe of TravelTax: Tax preparation for travel nurses and other traveling medical and mobile professionals has commented on this before here or another forum. He is an ex Traveler who has a business specializing in taxes of Healthcare Professional Travelers. I believe the company is right in this instance but don't quote me on that there may be details I'm missing. I'll see if I can find that discussion and post results. In the mean time I would contact him at the link above for the more exact answer. It would seem that they would try to give you some extra perk since they are getting a deal like better housing or higher pay etc...

When one spouse takes the free housing, the other spouse's stipend may not be considered tax-free anymore, but they should still be entitled to the stipend, just as taxable income.... for this travel company to say that they can't get it at all sounds fishy to me....

I agree with Amanda !!
You should be able to get the stipend but it will just be taxed !! :star:
Hope this helps
My husband and I are both RN's. We purchased a fifth wheel travel trailer and both take the stipend. Hope this helps.
