University Hospital has three ICUs:

Neuroscience ICU: 10 beds
Medical/Cardiac ICU: 14 beds
Trauma/Surgical/Burn: 16 beds

We have 1:1 patients and the typical staffing ratio is 1 nurse to 2
patients. We have a diverse and busy nursing practice as the only Level
One ICUs in the State of New Mexico.

The three ICUs share a collaborative patient mix but each devote
specialized care to particular patient populations:

Neuroscience ICU: isolated head injuries, cerebral aneurysms, brain
tumors, seizures, degenerative neurologic disorders, and strokes.

Medical/Cardiac ICU: CV surgery and cardiac, endocrine, renal, and
metabolic disorders.

Trauma/Surgical/Burn ICU: trauma, surgical (except neurosurgical),
burn, and multi-system failure.

All ICUs require a knowledge of ventilators and ACLS certification.
There are other educational preferences specific to the nursing practice
in each unit. In addition, the Neuroscience Unit requires experience
with ICP monitoring. The Medical/Cardiac ICU requires a knowledge of
Swan-Ganz catheters and vasoactive medications. The Trauma ICU requires
a knowledge of Swan-Ganz catheters, vasoactive medications, and trauma
nursing.

CVVH, balloon pumps, and burn care are areas of advanced critical care
expertise are not required of travelers to work on the units.

Trauma/Surgical/Burn ICU: 6 night positions 1900-0700
