Have you always wanted to be a nurse, but didn't think there was a program in your community? Feather River College offers a two-year vocational nursing program with the next program beginning August 2011. Interested students should start their prerequisites now to be ready for the next class.

The vocational nursing program at Feather River College allows students to take the program in an academic setting and provides opportunities to take other classes outside their major area. In addition, students benefit from college support services, including child care, financial aid, tutoring and the utilization of the Learning Resource Center and library.

The program averages 20 hours per week, year round for two years. The program includes 577 theory hours and 954 clinical hours in various healthcare settings.

The vocational nursing program offers students two options: Associate of Science degree with vocational nursing major or a vocational nursing certificate of achievement. Either option prepares the student to take the state Board of Nursing license exam.

Licensed vocational nurses practice under the direction of a licensed physician or registered nurse and are trained to perform services requiring technical and manual nursing skills to provide bedside nursing care. The duties of a licensed vocational nurse include: conducting basic assessment (data collection); participating in the care planning process; performing basic nursing services; administering medications; applying communication skills in patient care and teaching; and participating in patient education to promote self-care skills

Licensed vocational nurses are employed in a variety of health care settings that include acute care hospitals, long-term care/convalescent hospitals, home health agencies, physicians' offices, and medical clinics.

Sign up now to complete your prerequisites in time for acceptance into the next program. BIOL110, Human Anatomy is offered each fall semester; BIOL112, Human Physiology offered each spring semester; HES170, Introduction to Nutrition is offered online each spring semester; and NURS100, Nurse Aide, is offered yearly. Application packets to the nursing program will be available through the Allied Health Office in January 2011.
