Linfield College nursing students recently took their health care outreach into the community.

Professor Sarah Llanque and her students partnered with the Native American Youth and Family Center at a wellness fair, offering health screenings for Native American families in Portland.

“It’s important for our students to understand cultures other than their own so they can provide culturally-sensitive health care,” Llanque says.

“The nursing education at the Linfield-Good Samaritan School of Nursing is grounded in the liberal arts,” Llanque says. “We bring courses like history, sociology, language and anthropology into our curriculum.”

That approach, she says, produces thoughtful, culturally-sensitive nurses who can make a meaningful contribution to our diverse communities.

Linfield nursing students have conducted health care outreach with local vets and homeless populations, and the chief nursing officer at the Warm Springs Health and Wellness Center recently visited Linfield to speak about health care among Native Americans in rural Oregon. Students have even conducted health care outreach in India.

Linfield’s nursing major is a transfer-only program located on the Portland Campus in vibrant Northwest Portland.
