    Re: is housing really free????

Your housing is free only IF you maintain a "tax home" while you are traveling- if you will be maintaining a home or apartment in your home state while you are traveling, and can prove that you will be paying either a mortgage or rent in your home state, then your travel housing is tax-free. If you do not maintain a "tax home" then you will be taxed on anything your company spends on you for housing (still less than paying rent, though).

Just to add....Nothing is free. It all comes out of the base bill rate the hospital pays the company. It depends on what company or recruiter you deal with and your negotiating and research skills in what you get for housing.
I've done my own research on the Internet and compared with what they found for housing and negotiate from there. Many times if you may need to get housing allocation budget raised if it is below the avg going rate for decent corporate housing. Goal: Find turn key housing (furnished, all utilities covered, including cable, phone and highspeed internet, WD, DW, Pots pans dishes, microwave, AC/Heat ,parking). Yes you may not find that depending on the area and depending on your research skills. I've found the above in a small town Washington, NC including wireless Internet, DVD Player and DVD's and it was right on budget too. The recruiter loved it because all they had to do was write one check and sign the lease.
